We Look Forward to Welcoming Y’all To Jackson in 2021 for the
70th National square Dance Convention®
This is our 2nd Edition of the E-Magazine for the 70th
National Square Dance Convention® (70NSDC). Each
edition of the magazine will give you information so
you can make your plans for next June at the convention
and some neat activities before and after it. The Soul
Team Board which is comprised of people from all over
the USA is working hard to get everything planned so
you can have a great “REUNION” with your friends whether dancing, eating,
touring, enjoying some education classes or cruising.
We were having so much fun traveling to promote the 70th NSDC until the virus
struck. In August after 170 days of no dancing, we were able to travel 4 hours
from where we were camping at Pride RV resort in North Carolina down to
Georgia to dance, have fun and invite the dancers to Jackson for Dancing Fun in
2021 in the City with Soul.
I cannot believe it is less than 300 days till the convention will begin. If you have
not registered yet we personally invite you to join us at the 70th NSDC next June.
If you pre-registered with the short form, make sure you complete your long form
(do not pay again for registration like some have - just order additional items as
needed.) If you, pre-registered, you should have received a long form in the mail.
You can visit our webpage at www.70nsdc.com to complete registration form or
print it and mail it in, whatever you prefer. You can order Program Book with
Dailies, Round Dance Syllabus, schedule your hotel or camping reservations, order
a cookbook, order a Sew & Save Book, reserve tickets for the Elvis Wednesday
Night Special Event show and meal, order a bus pass, or buy magnets for badge if
you do not like sticking a pin in your clothes for your badge. You can register now
and order all your needs by clicking HERE.

We met at the National Square Dance Convention in Long Beach in 2009 and
became partners in 2013. We dance all levels from Mainstream through C1 and
have taken C2 however, we are still in the learning phase. Together we have been
to many California State and National Square Dance Conventions® as well as many
local and national festivals. We are active members of the Rowdy Crew, a group of
dancers from all over the country and even have a few members from Germany
and Australia. Our biggest event every year is at the National Square Dance
Convention®. The Rowdy Crew makes up 2½ to 3% of the attendance at the
NSDC. We have also competed in the World Senior Games in St George, Utah
taking two bronze medals.
Currently, we are General Chairman for the 2021 California State Square Dance
Convention and Assistant General Chairman for the 2021 National Square Dance
Convention® to be held in Jackson in June. We have performed at the Stagecoach
Country Music Festival in California as part of the Stagecoach Dancers.
Stagecoach is the premier country music festival in the western United States.
Musical performers have included Garth Brooks, Willie Nelson, Carrie
Underwood, Shania Twain and many more. We both love to travel and spend
time in our motorhome travelling to square dance festivals, the desert, and the
river. In California, “the river” is the Colorado river.
Linda began square dancing 15 years ago when she joined a community recreation
class. She loved it and wanted to dance more than once a week. When she learned
that there were square dance clubs and other lessons she could also attend, she took
3 classes simultaneously and thoroughly enjoyed it as well as the new friendships
she made.

After graduating at Plus level, she joined clubs and in addition to dancing, she has
participated in square dance related activities such as: socials, exhibitions, parades,
fundraisers, and fashion shows. She enjoys earning dangles and badges, including
the Century Club, Black Book, and California State Friendship Badge and she won
or placed in several square dance competitions, including state, national and
Huntsman World Senior Games. Linda set and achieved a goal to learn A1 and
dance it at her first National Square Dance Convention in Long Beach, CA in
2009 (where she remembers seeing and talking to Marvin).
Currently, Linda is a member of the Orange Coast Lariats, Ramblin' Rogues and
Trailblazers square dance clubs in Orange County, CA. She has served as chairman
on many convention committees and is now doing so for 3 conventions, one of
them being the 70th National Square Dance Convention.
I have danced for 56 years without a break. I first learned to dance in the third
grade when it was not an option. We danced to records and got to “perform” at the
sixth-grade culmination exercise. I was hooked. It was something that I enjoyed
doing and have continued. I found out that there were clubs that I could join and
went on a search which was not as easy as you might think, we did not have
Google. I found a pre-teen and teen groups. At that time there were eight different
teen groups within 25 miles of where I lived. In 1968 I joined the Valley Cats and
Woodstackers. I also danced with blind students at the Braille Institute and deaf
students at the California State University, Northridge which I later attended. We
learned the signs for the calls and there were people standing in the corners of the
hall telling us what to do using sign language. I am currently a member of the
Calico Quails, Ramblin’ Rogues and Trailblazers square dance clubs.
I became involved with the conventions and festivals as a volunteer to meet
people, dance all over the country and see the operations of putting on a successful
convention. My first California State Convention was in 1972 in Anaheim, CA
and have since attended 43 state conventions. My first National Convention was
the following year in Salt Lake City. I have attended 38 National Conventions.
The last one I missed was in 1986. I have danced in the Competition Squares
Event 7 times winning 1st place 4 times, 2nd once and 3rd twice.

I have held several positions with the National Square Dance Convention, Special
and Social Events 1976, Education 1988, Services Director, First Aid 2001, Asst.
Publicity Chairman 2009, Exhibition Vice Chairman 2014, and Program Chairman
2021. I am also President of the Western Square Dance Association.
I worked for Anthem Blue Cross for 31 years before retiring in January 2015. I
started in their photocopy room and worked in the mail room, claims, customer
service, and finance departments. I was a manager for the Student Health
Department which I created and ran for several years as well as manager over 5
Foundation offices
My other passion is travelling. I have been to 46 states and Washington D.C. as
well as 43 foreign countries. My favorite country is Israel which I have gone to 3
times. My favorite cities are Vienna, Austria and Budapest, Hungary. I cannot
even guess how many states and countries I have danced in. I have been on 6
continents including Antarctica and above the Arctic Circle in Norway.
We look forward to seeing you in Jackson Mississippi in June 2021.

CAMPING & RV NEWS
Great news, one month closer to the 70th National Square Dance Convention in
Jackson, Mississippi. We toured the fairgrounds recently to get an updated view of
the facility. We can absolutely confirm that there is plenty of camping space with
whatever hook-ups you need. Almost all sites have water, sewer, and 30/50-amp
electric service available.
The exciting news is that the new add-on building to
the Colosseum, the Mississippi Trade-Mart building,
is almost complete. We hope to have some of that
space available for RV/Campground afterparties so
that you can enjoy dancing almost practically outside
your camper door and only must walk just a few steps before you go to bed. We
will provide more information on campground afterparties and possible food
service as we get details.
I do not know about you, but with 2020 being a bust because of COVID-19, we are
really looking forward to this event. Here is a peek at the new facilities that are
being constructed. Not only is the campground close to the Convention Center, but
it is also within walking distance of several museums on the way to the Convention
Center. (Museum of Mississippi History, Old Capitol Museum, Mississippi
Museum of Art, the International Museum of Muslim Cultures, and more.) If
eating out is on your list, there are several fast-food options right outside the
Fairgrounds entrance such as Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Whataburger, Shoney’s, and
Waffle House. If you prefer a little better fare, there are numerous excellent
restaurants around the Convention Center.
Just a reminder; it is especially important that those planning to camp complete the
Camper Profile that was sent to you with your confirmation letter. It will help us
make sure that we meet your needs when you get here. You can return it to us by
mail or e-mail. If you registered and did not receive a Camper Profile, please e-
mail us at [email protected]. Just some other reminders, if you want to
be parked in a group, be sure to note that on the Camper Profile AND arrive
together.

Now all you need to do is look forward to
having a great time. The Fairgrounds is
just a short 1/4 mile from I-55. Just go
west at the Fairgrounds sign (High Street)
and look for the fairgrounds entrance. See
you there.

Volunteers Needed! Does the National Convention just happen? NO
Have you been to a National Convention before? Do you
know how many people it takes to put on a convention?
Dan and I have volunteered at different National
Conventions and we always try to thank people that are
working at the conventions because we know without
volunteers, we could not have all the fun we have. Did
you know that the callers and cuers volunteer their time and talents to the
convention? It takes many volunteers to help with Registration, Ways and
Means, Hospitality, Education, and even the Parade of States. Please
consider helping next year in Jackson when you take a break from dancing
to rest your legs. If you would like to volunteer please send us an email at
[email protected]. We have made some really, sweet friends
volunteering at conventions. Come join us!
FASHION SHOW AT THE 70TH NSDC Would you like to Jump on Board the “City with Soul” train to be a model in our
Fashion Show to show off your favorite outfit? If so, please contact our Fashion
Show Vice-Chairman, Linda Carlile at 903-277-8681 or [email protected].
There will be a practice session on Saturday morning June 26, 2021.

CALLERS WHO SUBMIT THEIR PROFILE AFTER THE
DEADLINE WILL BE PLACED ON A WAITING LIST
AND MAY NOT BE PROGRAMMED.
If you have already submitted your online profile, please
log on to the NCOS and check for updates. We have
added some requests for some of our special dance
forms in which you may wish to participate. Thank you!
Dance Leader Profile Information!
Hello all dance leaders! January 15th is the deadline for submitting your profiles to
be eligible to be programmed to call at the Nationals. There have been some issues
with people getting access to their NCOS Profile and submitting their profiles.
Here are detailed instructions and explanations for you to review and follow up
with.
It is important that everyone log onto the NCOS website and resubmit and verify
your profile for the 70th NSDC. We recently added a few square dance levels to the
70th NSDC profile, for example, and are asking everyone to review their options so
we can program you appropriately.
LOGGING IN TO THE SYSTEM
To access your profile, please visit https://sdconvention.com/ . This is the portal for
all things for the convention, including information on your registrations, dance
leader profiles, etc. Each dance leader should have their own login and their own
profile.
Any questions please email:
Marvin Fishman, Program Chairman [email protected]
https://sdconvention.com/mailto:[email protected]
-
26
Below are step-by-step instructions for completing your profile for the 70th NSDC
in Jackson, Mississippi. (Note: these are the same instructions used for the 68th
NSDC Atlanta, Georgia registration.)
If you have logged in before, and you know your username and password, you can
simply log in.
Troubleshooting your login:
If you do not know your password, click
“Forgot your password?” to retrieve your
password.
If you have never logged on before, click on “Register here. “
Try and send an activation email if you are unsure.
If you are unsure, or do not know your username or password, and have tried
the above steps, please email Marvin Fishman, Program Chairman at
mailto:[email protected]
-
27
ACCESSING YOUR PROFILE
Once you have logged in, you will see a couple of things:
First, at the top, you should see “Dance Leader Profile”. This is your MASTER
profile. You should click that and update your general information. This
information is used as default information to populate the various convention
profiles from year to year, so it is important to keep your MASTER profile up to
date. You can log on at any time of the year and make updates as needed. Please
note that updating this information will NOT automatically submit a profile for
your registered conventions. You will have to make changes to your Registered
Convention profiles as well.
Next, there will be a list of upcoming conventions and if you are registered for the
70NSDC, you will see a registration number under the convention. On the right
side, if you have completed your long form, you should see a blue button to
update your profile FOR THIS CONVENTION. YOU MUST CLICK THIS BUTTON TO
SUBMIT YOUR PROFILE INFORMATION. The first time you click on that link, your
Master Dance Leader Profile information will populate, and you can make
adjustments for this convention.
Troubleshooting your profile
If you do not see a registration number, or do not see your Update Profile button,
please email Marvin Fishman, Program Chairman [email protected]. We
will look up your information and check on your long form.
mailto:[email protected]
-
28
UPDATE YOUR PROFILE
Under the General tab, you can select which program you would like to be
programmed to, and what your availability will be for the convention. Make your
changes and click Close.
You will then be able to adjust your profile for the programs you would like to be
programmed for. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU REVIEW YOUR INFORMATION, even if
you think that you have already submitted your profile.
-
29
IMPORTANT POINTS
PLEASE verify that you have followed the steps above and submitted a profile.
Your profile is NOT submitted for the 70th NSDC until you click on the blue button
by your convention registration information.
Your profiles are due JANUARY 15th!!!!!! No completed registration, no profile,
you will not be programmed for the convention.
Thank you for being willing to help us make Jackson a GREAT convention!!!!!

Mississippi Dinner Menu
Below are some of my favorite dishes. This is a meal that I would typically make
in the fall after the sweet potatoes have been harvested and the sweet potato
casserole is a dish that I am asked to bring to family gatherings, office parties, and
get togethers. You will need a “World of Meals” cookbook to enjoy these dishes.
❖ Appetizer: Firecrackers, page 10
❖ Salad: Winter Fruit Salad with lemon poppyseed dressing, page 46
❖ Entrée: Norma’s Pork Loin, page 120
❖ Vegetable: Sweet Potato Casserole, page 68
❖ Dessert: Mississippi Mud Cake, page 193
Did you know - Vardaman, Mississippi is known as the
Sweet Potato Capital of the World!

Cut squash in half, place cut side down in baking dish. Pour ¼” of boiling water in

SHOWCASE OF IDEAS
See this empty table?
Your organization’s display could be
on one in the Showcase of Ideas at
the 70th NSDC. The Showcase of
Ideas is visited by convention
attendees throughout the week.
What should be on our table you ask? Tell us about your
state, dancing opportunities, touristy things to see when we
visit to dance in your state. Be sure to make your display
inviting and interesting. Dancers like to pick up items, flyers,
etc.
In the past, the usual procedure has been to distribute applications for participation
in the Showcase of Ideas for the next National Convention at current or proceeding
National Convention. Because the National Convention in Spokane, Washington,
was cancelled this was not possible.
To communicate your desire to participate in the Showcase of Ideas at the 70th
NSDC in Jackson, Mississippi, a copy of the application is being placed in this
issue of our magazine.
To indicate your desire to participate in the Showcase of Ideas at the 70th NSDC
please download and complete the attached application. Please mail or Email this
application to the address indicated on the application. If you have any questions,
please give Don Winkler a call at the number located on the application.
Please keep in mind that someone other than yourself must read your very vital
contact information so please PRINT clearly. This will ensure that any follow-up
information will reach you. Thank you.

leaders that volunteered their time to help our Convention with Benefit Dances.

Meet our advertisers
The National Squares E-Magazine now reaches thousands of readers. Advertising is accepted to
help get your message to National Squares subscribers.
Each month prior to the National Square Dance Convention®, the National Squares is published
to provide information to subscribers. The newsletter details the efforts being undertaken to
prepare for the convention including interesting and exciting activities.
Below is the Advertising contract. Please contact anyone on the National Executive Committee
to learn more about advertising opportunities.
NEW USDA MEMEMBERSHIP CLASSIFICATION:
ASSOCIATE MEMBERS
The United Square Dancers of America has created a new classification of USDA membership – Associate Members. Local square-dance related
associations or clubs that are members of a USDA Affiliate organization may apply for USDA Associate Member status. Once accepted for Associate Membership, these groups are eligible to participate in all USDA programs and activities; however Associate Members do not hold voting rights at the Annual Meeting. Of particular interest to Associate Members might be the opportunity to apply for 501(c)(3) non-profit status under the new USDA 501(c)(3) group exemption program. To apply for USDA Associate Membership status, local organizations should complete the application available at http://www.usda.org/member.htm. Associate Members must agree to abide by the USDA Bylaws and Standing Rules as well as comply with the USDA Code of Ethics and Code of Conduct. A list of the necessary documentation is included in the membership application. Annual dues for Associate Members are $25. For further information about USDA membership, go to http://www.usda.org/member.htm. Information on the 501(c)(3) group exemption program is available at http://www.usda.org/USDA501c3Program.htm.
