Whole-atmosphere Mean CO2 Concentration by GOSAT Data(GOSAT) (CO2)

“IBUKI” (GOSAT) to Detect Anthropogenic CO2 and CH4 Emissions (GOSAT) (CO2) (CH4)

400.2ppm

400.1ppm

The whole-atmosphere mean CO2 con-centration was calculated based on GOSATdata, covering from the surface to the top ofthe atmosphere (70km above the surface),collected for about 7 years since May 2009.Monthly mean CO2 concentration recorded400.2 ppm in December 2015, and CO2

trend* 400.1 ppm in February 2016,excluding seasonal fluctuations. Monthlymean CO2 concentration peaked 402.3 ppmin May 2016.

CO2 and CH4 concentrations were analyzedbased on GOSAT data for 3.5 years from June2009 to December 2012, which showed thatCO2 in mega-cities and energy industry areas, and CH4 in densely populated, intensefarming, or oil/natural gas producing areas, have the tendency for higher concentrationscompared to their surrounding environments. This demonstrates the potential utility tomonitor anthropogenic emissions** of thesegreenhouse gases from space.

The values constituting the black line show the average of 1 – 2 years.

** Higher anthropogenic CO2 concentration is found at China: Zhangjiakou, Anshan, Harbin, and Tianjin; India: Kolkata; Eastern part of Uzbekistan; Southern edge of Kazakhstan; Easternarea of Kyrgyzstan; Northern edge of Tajikistan; Northwestern part of Saudi Arabia; Jordan; US: Pittsburg, Los Angeles; Mexico: Acapulco. Higher anthropogenic CH4 concentration is foundat China: Chengdu, Chongqing; India: Kolkata, Meghalaya; Bangladesh: Dacca; Pakistan: Lahore; US: Pittsburg, New York, Los Angeles; Brazil: Campo Cerrado, Pantanal; Russia: Surgut.
