3 THINGS WE LEARNED
AT TALLADEGA
3 THINGS TO WATCH
— Godwin Kelly, [email protected]
— Godwin Kelly, [email protected]
WINNER: Jimmie
Johnson
REST OF TOP 5: Joey
Logano, Kurt Busch,
Kyle Busch, Brad
Keselowski
FIRST ONE OUT: Kevin
Harvick
DARK HORSE: Kyle
Larson
DON’T BE SURPRISED
IF: Johnson finds his
winning form at the
half-mile oval where
he has eight career
Cup victories.
Has your championship
prediction changed?
GODSPEAK: I was with
Harvick, but that Logano
bandwagon is loud, fast and
tempting.
KEN'S CALL: I've been with
Joey for a long time now.
Anyone see a reason to
change?
Lot of big names out.
Concerned?
GODSPEAK: Sorry to see Dale
Jr. go because he always
makes the storyline a bit
more compelling.
KEN'S CALL: Junior's exit
hurts, but all these guys are
familiar to racin' fans, so it's
not like a bunch of strangers
are in the hunt.
Can Joey four-peat at
Martinsville?
GODSPEAK: Statistically, no.
With Matt Kenseth in the
field, absolutely not.
KEN'S CALL: I don't really
consider Talladega a win for
him, so who cares?

DENNY HAMLIN VS. KEVIN HARVICK:
Harvick ignited the “Big One” on the last
green-flag lap, which swept Hamlin out
of the Chase.
GODWIN KELLY’S TAKE: The consensus
was that Harvick caused the wreck to
advance in the playoffs. He didn’t make
many friends, which could haunt him in
the next three weeks.
Hamlin Harvick
How will losing Matt Kenseth affect NASCAR?
Small picture:
Not so much.
For all of Matt’s
achievements
in NASCAR, he’s
never been one
you’d make
the focus of a marketing campaign. So
the Chase will survive without him. Big
picture, however: He put the lumber to
the Boys in Competition.
Mild Matt?
Yep, and he did it out of frustration,
anger, whatever, but coming from him,
there was bad mojo in the review of
the messy Talladega finish, with all the
finger-pointing at Kevin Harvick and
“the system.” Said Matt: “I just feel
like they lost total control of this whole
thing. It's not what racing is all about.”
That’s bad stuff.
And your feelings?
I stand by my long-held view that no
race should finish under yellow, regard-
less of how many restarts it takes.
And once you start tinkering with the
number of restarts allowed, particularly
midweek, you’re begging for trouble. As
a topper, the Chase’s laws of unintended
consequences hit hard at Talladega.
Ironically, it was Kenseth’s tedious
march to the 2003 championship that
helped pave the way for the Chase.

1. Say goodnight, Gracie
Sunday’s NASCAR Cup race at
Talladega was the last race of
Chase Round 2. Four title con-
tenders were knocked out of
the playoffs. The unfortunate
four were Dale Earnhardt Jr.,
Ryan Newman, Matt Kenseth
and Denny Hamlin. All were a
bit grumpy after the race. “I
really can’t spin any positive
on it right now,” Hamlin said
of his day.
2. Four straight?
Joey Logano had the option
to coast at Talladega but
chose to go the distance and
was rewarded with his third
consecutive victory. He swept
all the races in Chase Round
2. Has the driver of the No. 22
Ford used up all his luck, or
can he make it four straight
wins? Logano sees more
success. “We've got momen-
tum,” he said. “This team has
been firing on all eight right
now.”
3. Clever move
Kevin Harvick’s No. 4 Chevy
had the speed of a moped in
the closing laps at Talladega.
Something went bad in the
engine. He had to score a
good finish to advance to
Chase Round 3. It appears
Harvick love-tapped Trevor
Bayne on the restart, igniting
the race-ending crash that
froze Harvick in 15th. Now he
must deal with a fistfull of
upset drivers the next three
weeks. Good luck with that.
Denny Hamlin’s championship
hopes flamed out at Talladega.

1. Ain’t over until …
A race isn’t over until NASCAR
says it is over. NASCAR
said there would be one
green-white-checkered flag
sequence, if needed, at Tal-
ladega. Turns out there were
two, kinda. On the second
restart, Kevin Harvick veered
into Trevor Bayne, and about
a third of the field crashed
before reaching Turn 1.
Harvick, who advanced in
the Chase due to the wreck,
became the big focus of
unwanted attention.
2. Most disappointed
There were many. Among
them, Ryan Newman, who
was in position to make Chase
Round 3, but the “Big One”
took him out. He was frus-
trated at NASCAR, fuming,
“Well, I guess if you come up
with a new rule every week,
we’ll have something to talk
about, won’t we?”
3. Drive for five
Jeff Gordon’s hopes for a
fifth NASCAR Cup Series
championship moved forward
into Chase Round 3. “Watch
out," Gordon said, "we have
something for them these
next three or four.” Maybe,
finally, a win in his going-away
season?
Good news for Tony Stewart: This didn’t wreck any championship hopes for the No. 14 team. ASSOCIATED
