Rotary Club - Rotary Solar Water Pump Competition
Aim: Encourage students to understand the science behind solar power and how it can be applied both here and
in developing countries
Background: Solar powered pumps are used around the world to deliver water for irrigation, for drinking water
and sanitation. Rotary Clubs worldwide support many humanitarian projects that involve a wide variety of
pumps. Broadly, there are two kinds of pumps; those that provide high volume but low head, and then there are
those that can pump up hill but at low volume.
The competition will be part of the Renewable Energy Expo which Rotary is organising. Our intention with the
expo is to encourage the uptake of renewables in our region, to support local businesses, and to showcase some of
the projects which Rotary International is undertaking in East Timor and Africa.
The website is: expo.naroomarotary.org.au
The competition: Construct a solar powered pump to lift a volume of 10 litres 600 mm high.
Conditions: The pump and associated solar components should be constructed on a base board not greater than
600mm x 600mm. All components should be contained within the footprint of the baseboard. The pump must be
totally solar powered using a maximum panel rating of 20 watts.
For safety reasons, the maximum working voltage needs to be restricted to 48V.
Auxiliary batteries, capacitors or other stored energy may be used in the construction but they must be fully
discharged at the start, ie the solar cells should be covered, and the pump demonstrated to not run.
The pump is required to pump 10 litres of water from a tank contained within the footprint of the baseboard to an
open discharge located 600mm above the 10 litre fill level of the supply tank. The discharge point must be
accessible for water discharge capture beyond the base plate.
Expression of interest for entry must be emailed to Narooma Rotary Club at [email protected]
Additional and original documentation on the theory, design and application must be submitted on the day of the
expo.
The pumps will be assessed at the Sports and Recreation Centre in Narooma on November 26th at approximately
2pm. Exhibits will be available for collection after 3.30pm on Sunday 27th November.
WINNER: The competition will be judged on Saturday November 26th. We are hoping that the Hon. Dr Mike
Kelly will present the prizes to the winning team.
The winning entry will be judged on a number of criteria:
Ten points will be awarded in each of the following categories:
- speed of pumping 10 litres (quicker is better)
- height of pumping above 600mm (higher is better)
- quality of accompanying documentation, and an ability to demonstrate an understanding of the science
(subjective)
- innovation (subjective)
Six points will be awarded in each of the following categories:
- cost (cheaper is better)
- build (neater is better)
Prizes: The wining team members will each receive a NodeMcu WIFI Internet Development Board. These are
very capable microprocessors, which are powered by plugging them into a USB socket.
The school will receive a Raspberry Pi version 3.
Hints: A positive displacement pump can be made easily with 2 one way valves and some other low cost bits and
pieces.
Because solar panels are effectively constant current sources they cannot deliver extra power for starting like a
battery can, so some electronics called a maximiser can be used to overcome this.
