FLORIDA 500 YEARS

Page 5: nao & galleon Florida 500

a dozen of historical sailing or non-sailing ships have been built; more than 70.000 traveled miles with the sailing ones; more than 25 countries of 4 continents visited; and more than 9 million visitors received are a clear evidence of the professionalism, rigor and guaranteed success that you can get from Nao Victoria Foundation in these kind of projects.

On April 2, 1513 Juan Ponce de León reached the land he called Florida. So began 500 years of Florida history, of recognition, exploration, and creation of new settlements. Years later, in 1565, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés establishes on these lands the oldest city in the United States, St. Augustine.

Naos and galleons played leading roles in these events.

Viva Florida 500 is designed to commemorate the fifth centennial of Florida, which has its beginnings in the arrival of Juan Ponce de León to its shores in 1513, one of the most important milestones in United States history.

A commemoration that hopes to recognize the rich and diverse history of Florida and its 500 years of historic heritage, at both national and international levels.

For which a program of events is being prepared that, with the support of government bodies, organizations, and institutions, will achieve the spreading of its objectives.

Both boats will depart from Spain and cross the Atlantic Ocean to reach Puerto Rico, where Juan Ponce de León began his expedition, and then continue the crossing to the coasts of Florida.

The Nao and the Galleon will be considered of an extraordinary interest and agreat attraction at every port, because of their unmistakable figures and status as diplomatic vessels. Promotional events, public visits, communication and media events and institutional acts will be organized at the different ports.

During the long ocean crossings, the Nao and Galleon will develop an important program of activities related to scientific research and social nature. There will be studies and projects carried out in the following areas: Marine Environment, Biodiversity, and Environmental Sciences.

During the voyage, TV recording devices could be used to follow the journey onboard the two boats, conducting workshops on various aspects of the history of these voyages: diet, sailing exercises, life onboard, health, etc…

Real Time Follows-Ups on the Atlantic Crossing, as the ships will be sailing as they did in the sixteenth century.
