Although Swakopmund is being increasingly visited by more and more foreigners throughout the year - December months seem to be the highlight for all local tourists. Inundated by strange faces and complemented by a carefree atmosphere it creates the perfect break away destination.The days are tranquil, sunny and filled with activities, ranging from the traditional angling competitions to the annual Christmas Fair and Miss Palm Beach.At night the town is glowing in colourful lights creating an almost magic feeling. The evenings present various opportunities for dining out, dancing, gambling and going to the movies.
Swakopmund is the perfect setting for any scene imaginable.

ALTES AMTSGERICHT: Corner Tobias Hainyeko Street and Theo-Ben Gurirab Avenue. The “Altes Amtsgericht” or Magistrate’s Court, was erected in 1908. It was originally planned as a school, but when money ran out and the Swakopmunders were not prepared to finance it any further the state completed construction and used it as Magistrate’s offices.
MARINE DENKMAL: Western end of Daniel Tjongarero Avenue.This monument, sculpted by a Mr. Wolff, was erected in 1908 to commemorate members of the German naval expedition killed in action.
LIGHTHOUSE: Originally a small lighthouse was built on the western end of the mole, but it was swept away by a huge wave soon after construction. The present 11 metre high lighthouse was constructed in 1903 further away and higher above sea level.
Swakopmund is widely known and loved for its Old World charm of beautiful, well kept buildings from the founding days at the turn of the century.
The buildings or sections of buildings represent various styles such as the Neo-Barrock (Evangelical Lutheran Church), Jugendstil (Woermann House) or Classic with variations by well known architects such as Redecker, Ortloff, Hoft and Ertl.
Eleven buildings in Swakopmund have officially been declared national monuments on account of their architectural style. There are 33 other buildings which are also of interest.
SCULTETUS HEIM: Moses Garoeb Street. In 1912 Engineer Kramer designed and built this house for himself. It was subsequently extended by Woermann Brock, and used temporarily by Major Scultetus as a school hostel. It was declared a National Monument in 1977.
THE PRISON: Corner of Moses Garoeb Street and Hidipo Hamutenya Avenue. The prison was completed in 1909. Apart from extensions to the rear, the building is still in its original form. This building was declared a National Monument in 1973.
OTAVI BAHNHOF: Sam Nujoma Avenue. This was the original station built in 1906. It was used until 1914 for the export of copper ore.
GERMAN SCHOOL: Daniel Tjongarero Avenue. Built in 1913, the school houses the German-medium secondary school.
O.M.E.G. HAUS: Sam Nujoma Avenue. An old goods shed, declared a National Monument in 1972.
EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH & PARSONAGE: Daniel Tjongarero Avenue. Both buildings were designed in Neu-Barock style and were completed in 1911. They were declared a National Monument in 1978.
MUNICIPALITY: Daniel Tjongarero Avenue. This building was erected in 1907 to serve as a Post Office, telephone exchange and living quarters for

LUDWIG SCHRODER HOUSE & HAUS ALTONA: Corner of Daniel Tjongarero Avenue and Tobias Hainyeko Street. These are two well-preserved business/ residential buildings from former times. Haus Altona was the headquarters of the Woermann Line Shipping company.
KAISERLICHES BEZIRKSGERICHT: Northern side of the Am Zoll Street. This building was erected in phases during 1901 and 1905 as a seat of justice from which certain local and district affairs could also be conducted. Since 1918 it was used as the summer residence of government officials and since the country’s independence as the State President’s summer residence.
HAUS HOHENZOLLERN: Tobias Hainyeko Street.Erected in the year 1909 as a hotel. Much gambling took place in it, to such an extent that the hotel license was revoked by the Magistrate. It has now for many years been used for residential purposes.
KABELMESSE: Ludwig Koch Street. Built during 1901 for the Eastern and South African Telegraph Company as headquarters for its employees who installed the undersea cable from Europe to Cape Town.
DIE KASERNE: Corner Bismarck and Anton Lubowski Avenue.This building, in typical German Colonial style, was erected in 1905 to provide living quarters for the engineers’ regiment sent to Swakopmund to fight the Herero uprising and construct a landing pier and railway line to the interior.
DR. SCHWIETERING HOUSE & old residence: Corner Daniel Tjongarero Avenue and Otavi Street. These two residences were built in 1910. The one on the corner was used by Dr and Mrs. Schwietering as consulting rooms for several decades.
HAUS CORDES: On the south side of Daniel Tjongarero Avenue. Named after the first Town Clerk of Swakopmund. This is one of the last remaining turn-of-the-century wooden residences. Today it is used as shops and offices.
PRINZESSIN RUPPRECHT HEIM: Anton Lubowski Avenue. It was built in 1902 to serve as a hospital and extended to supply all medical services to the troops.
FREUDHAUS, Tobias Hainyeko Street. It was built in 1899, today it houses Photo Studio Behrens.

MOLE: The mole is situated at the spot where Swakopmund was founded by Hauptman Curt von Francois, the Commander of the German armed forces, the Schutztruppe, on August 4, 1892. The Germans attempted to establish landing facilities for ships but their efforts to build a harbour failed because the currents continuously deposited sand.
WOERMANN TOWER: The top of the Woermann Tower offers an excellent viewpoint over Swakopmund, the ocean and the surrounding desert. Interested visitors may obtain the keys for the staircase to the tower from the local gallery of the Swakopmund Arts Association, also situated in the historical Woermann Haus, against a small fee. Children need to be accompanied by adults.
MUSEUM: The Swakopmund museum started as the scientific collection of Dr. Alfons Weber in 1951. It was transferred to the present site in 1960. Special exhibits include panoramas of the desert and sea life, a collection of semi-precious stones, an extensive historical collection and a modern technical exhibit of the largest open uranium mine in the world – Rössing. The building was originally the customs shed of the harbour. When Swakopmund was bombarded by an auxiliary cruiser “Kinfauns Catle” on September 24, 1914 during World War 1, the building was destroyed by fire. The ruins were renovated some forty years later to house the museum.
WAR MEMORIAL: On the way back to town through the municipal garden, there is a memorial to commemorate the soldiers who died in the two world wars.
NAMIB DESERT TOUR: On your way out of town you will pass the old steam locomotive, “Martin Luther”, given the name because of Mr. Luther’s historic statement in 1521, “Here I stand: I cannot do otherwise”. Your drive takes you past Burg Hotel Nonidas and small holdings in the arid Swakop riverbed, leading through interesting canyons with spectacular rock formations. This is the area to find the Welwitschia Mirabilis, the edible Narafruit, the “Living Stones” and the Quivertree. You might spot the “Klipspringer” which has
MORE TO DO AND VISIT IN SWAKOPMUNDadapted remarkably to its harsh environment. At Goanikontes you pass a desert oasis which served as a police station during colonial times. Towards the direction of the dunes there are lookout points at the moon landscape with its breathtaking view.
SPITZKOPPE: The Namibian “Matterhorn”. These dome shaped Pondok Mountains are granite formations where early man found refuge against the elements. Walls and over hangs have a rich abundance of rock art. A fairly steep climb takes you to the famous “Bushmen’s Paradise” rock paintings, spectacular rock formations and interesting flora. An absolute rock climbing mecca.
KUISEB RIVER: A drive through the Kuiseb River will lead you to places such as the fossilised elephant footprints and bring you in touch with the Topnaar community.
AQUARIUM: Enjoy an informative outing to the Aquarium which features a large transparent tank with a glass walk-through tunnel. Please note the aquarium is closed on Mondays.
CAMEL RIDES: Enjoy a fun filled afternoon experiencing true desert automation.
FISHING: Boat & beach fishing.
HORSE RIDING: Outrides departing throughout the day from the Swakop canyon to the Moon Landscape.
OVERNIGHT SAFARIS: Various options available. Contact a local tour operator.
QUAD BIKE TOURS: Venture on your own on a rented bike or, participate in guided tours available by various operators.
SWIMMING: Swimming in the sea is restricted to the Mole basin.
DUNE SAND BOARDING: Up or down - No experience is needed for either type of boarding. Six different dune rides are included for the lie-down boarding, where speeds of up to 80 kilometers per hour can be reached. Safety equipment and refreshments are included. Bookings are required.
SPORTS: The SFC Sports Club in town hosts numerous sporting events. The Rossing Golf Club 10 km outside town offers an 18 hole golf course, a great variety of facilities and make provision for temporary membership.

Entering the park by vehicle:Any person entering the ORV area (the Dune Belt between Langstrand and Walvis Bay) by vehicle will need a permit. A permit is not required for the use of a vehicle in other permitted areas or when driving on park routes in the Dorob National Park published herein. Permitted and prohibited areas for sedans, 4x4s, bakkies and beach buggies:• These vehicles may only drive in the ORV area with a permit (the Dune Belt between Langstrand and Walvis Bay) and without a permit on proclaimed roads and clearly marked MET routes, tracks and roads (except where prohibited). • Where allowed, beach driving is only authorised on MET designated and clearly marked routes, tracks and roads. • No driving is allowed on the beaches at the sea fronts of Henties Bay, Wlotzkasbaken, Swakopmund, Cape Cross and the Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) managed camping sites at Mile 14, Jakkalsputz, Mile 72 and Mile 108. • East of the minor C34 routes, self-drives are only allowed on the 4x4 tracks indicated on the attached maps. Detailed maps and GPS coordinates should be obtained from the Henties Bay Tourism Association.Permitted and prohibited areas for quad bikes and other motorised bikes:• Quad bikes and other motorised bikes may only drive in the ORV area with a permit (the Dune Belt between Langstrand and Walvis Bay) and without a permit west of the coastal road between Swakopmund and Henties Bay, only on proclaimed roads and clearly marked MET tracks and roads (except where prohibited). • Where allowed, beach driving is only authorised on MET designated and clearly marked tracks.• Quad bikes and other motorised bikes are prohibited on beaches between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, in all areas north of Henties Bay, and on the beaches at the seafronts of Henties Bay, Wlotzkasbaken, Swakopmund, and the Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) managed camping sites.• Quad bikes are strictly prohibited north of the Omaruru River up to the Ugab River and other motorised bikes are prohibited off the proclaimed roads north of the Omaruru River up to the Ugab River.• Quad bikes and other motorised bikes are permitted 10 km upstream from Henties Bay within the Omaruru River but not beyond.General:• People may use a vehicle in the park with their permit at any time except between 21:00 and 05:00. This provision does not apply to proclaimed roads and people may use those roads at any time.• Young people aged 16 years or younger may only drive or use a vehicle if an adult accompanies him/her. • A valid driver’s license will be required to use any motor vehicle in the park. • No person shall drive or use any vehicle in the park whilst under the influence of alcohol or any other narcotic substance or in such a way that is dangerous to human life or that may cause damage to any property or the environment.• Between Walvis Bay and Swakopmund, no person shall offload their quad bike or motorised bike at any other area than the designated offloading areas in the Dune Belt between Langstrand and Walvis Bay.
Being one of the most unique parks in the world, the Dorob National Park along the central Namibian coast caters for various leisure, tourism and sports activities while also providing for conservation measures and specific conservation areas. The Dorob National Park, announced in the Government Gazette of 1 December 2010, stretches from the Kuiseb Delta (south of Walvis Bay) northwards to the Ugab River; and westwards from the low water mark of the Atlantic Ocean towards the border of the previous National West Coast Tourist Recreation Area It includes the Walvis Bay Lagoon, a Ramsar Site, but excludes the municipal areas of Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Henties Bay and the settlement area of Wlotzkasbaken. It also excludes the railway line between Walvis Bay, Swakopmund and Arandis, the road reserves of the major B2 route; the minor routes C14, C28, C34, C35, C39; the district roads D1983, D1984, D1986, D1991, D1901, D1918, D2303, and D2302; and farms under private ownership or belonging to a parastatal institution. Visitors to the Dorob National Park, who would wish to enjoy the various leisure, sports and tourism activities in the park, are notified that they should familiarize themselves with and obey the regulations, laws and rules, contained in this pamphlet. For further clarification they can also consult with the coastal offices of the Ministry of Environment and Tourism at Swakopmund or Walvis Bay. Regarding the fishing regulations anglers should consult with the offices of the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Resources in Walvis Bay and Swakopmund.The Nature Conservation Ordinance Section 14 protects and preserves wild animal life, fisheries, wild plant life and objects of geological, archaeological, historical and other scientific interest and for the benefit and enjoyment of the inhabitants of Namibia. Therefore some activities in the Dorob National Park are allowed, while others are not. Activities causing the least damage to park resources are regulated less, while those that would be the most damaging are strictly regulated.
PEOPLE & DOMESTIC ANIMALS IN PARKAll people who enter the park must:• Comply with the stipulations of the Ordinance, the regulations and the Environmental Management Act of 2007; • Comply with the instructions of signposts, signboards, pamphlets or communicated in any other manner; • Obey any legal order or instruction given by a Law-enforcement Officer. When entering by foot people may:• Go without a permit except in an area that is closed or exclusionary; and • Go on foot if being young adults or younger than 16 without adult supervision, but do so at their own risk.. Domestic Animals in the park:• A person may take a domestic animal into the park without a permit, except in areas where it is indicated that such animals are not allowed; • Such animals should be under control by the person at all times; • The person and animal should adhere to all regulations; • The person must remove the faeces of the animal; and • The animal shall not cause any inconvenience, nuisance, damage or injury to other people, animals and any plants or any other aspect of the environment.

PERMITS:Currently a permit is required for the Off-Road Vehicle area in the Dune Belt between Langstrand and Walvis Bay. Get this free permit to drive in the specially demarcated off-road area between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay from:Ministry of Environment and Tourism:1. Swakopmund Office, Cnr. Bismarck St. & Sam Nujoma Ave.2. Walvis Bay Office, 643 Heinrich Baumann St. Tel.: 064 – 404 576 Office hours for both offices during weekdays: 08:00 – 17:00.Weekends & Public Holidays: 08:00 – 13:00.
A permit for the park routes, roads and tracks will only be required once a date has been determined in the near future. Currently, vehicles are by no means allowed off of MET designated routes, tracks and roads except in the ORV area and vehicles are not allowed in closed or exclusionary areas. Closed and exclusionary areas include the Damara Tern Breeding Area, the Swakop River, Lichen Fields any other areas designated closed or exclusionary.Please be reminded that although in some cases the general public may not need a permit, tourism operators, commercial activities, and competitions, events, and meetings/assemblies are required to obtain a specific permit from MET and registered with the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB) for these activities, no matter the location within the Dorob National Park.
Camping:People may overnight or camp in the Dorob National Park but only with a permit and only at officially designated sites.Domestic animals may not be brought into a camping site unless the officer in charge grants permission indicating where the animal may stay overnight. Although people may enter a camping site by vehicle, they may not: - use a buzz-bike, power driven cycle, quad bike or motor cycle in the campsite, - drive any other vehicle faster than 20 kilometres per hour in any place within a camping site, and - drive or use a vehicle on any portion of the beach that is situated between a camping site and the sea.
Specific conservation provisions:Although many activities are allowed in the park, no person is allowed to: • Angle on the beach in such a way that is inconvenient to other people; • Leave or use angling tackle in a place where it may cause inconvenience or injury to other persons or animals; • Throw away or get rid of any part of a fish, bait, refuse or rubbish other than in the refuse bins provided; • Collect or remove any shell, shell grit, sand, rock or stone; • Use water or
electricity in excessive quantities or for any other purpose other than for reasonable domestic use; • Pollute or degrade the environment; • Kill, injure, hunt, capture, disturb or feed any wild animal or remove any part of any wild animal, whether alive or dead; • Remove, destroy, damage or disturb any egg, nest or burrow;• Pick, collect, mutilate, destroy, damage, tamper with, disturb or remove any tree, plant, shrub, herb, mineral or any other object of botanical, zoological, geological, archaeological, historical or any other scientific interest, or part thereof; • Collect or gather firewood; or • Remove, damage, destroy, soil, mutilate or interfere with any form of State property.
Entering the park by air:• Although aircraft and helicopters may fly above a game park, it is unlawful to fly at the altitude of less than 1 000 meters, except for lawfully landing or taking off. • It is illegal to land in, take off from, enter or fly over the Dorob National Park in such a way that is dangerous to human life or that may cause damage to any property or the environment.Commercial activities and business:A permit is required from the Ministry of Environment and Tourism to do any of the following in the park: • Carry on, transact, or conduct any trade, business or tourism; • Hold any organised competition or event;• Undertake any construction activities of any nature; or • Engage in any kind of commercial activity.

SANDWICH HARBOUROne of Namibia’s four Ramsar sites and Namibia’s only marine reserve, Sandwich Harbour was once a natural harbour for whalers and fish processors who could gain access to fresh water there.
Sandwich Harbour is a natural lagoon which lies on the Namib Desert coast approx. 55km south of Walvis Bay and is one of the most important wetland areas in southern Africa, regularly supporting thousands of birds during the year. There have been no permanent human inhabitants there since 1969, although remnants of a whaling station are found at the foot of the dunes and some wooden buildings almost entirely covered in sand can still be seen.
The entire area is a marine reserve and falls within the boundaries of the Namib Naukluft Park, managed by the Ministry of Environment & Tourism.
It is also a very popular area visited for angling and its towering majestic dunes that meet the sea.
Careful note should be taken of the following points: • This is an environmentally sensitive area and rules and regulations should be adhered to at all times.
• A permit is required to enter the park, obtainable from the Walvis-i Information Bureau, Monday - Saturday business hours only. BEACH OR SKI BOAT ANGLING: Full day angling adventures by ski boat or from the beach are available to test your skills. Shoreline Fishing covers the area from Sandwich Harbour south of Walvis Bay northward up to Terrace Bay in the Skeleton Coast Park. Permits are necessary. These trips are done in 4 x 4 vehicles, max. 4 - 5 persons per vehicle, by professional angling guides - to ensure personal attention and maximum catches. Professional guides are also qualified skippers. A requirement is that boats are surveyed annually and have seaworthy certificates for all safety, radio, and navigational equipment requirements. Skippers boast valid skipper’s licences.
HORSERIDING: Walvis Bay has an equestrian club of repute where horses are available by request.
TOPNAAR COMMUNITY IN THE KUISEB: The Topnaars have lived on the banks of the Kuiseb River for many years. They are also called !Nara people because they actively harvest the !Naras, a wild melon that grows in the Kuiseb river bed. Traditionally, the Topnaars acquired a lot of their food from the sea. They speared fish in the shallow water and hunted seals, birds and turtles. They are also called Beachcombers. Oxwagon-tracks dating back to 1844 and Scheppmannsdorf, a former camp of the German Schutztruppe, can be seen.
PAALTJIES: South of Walvis Bay on the coastline is “Paaltjies” - old navigational beacons used by commercial fishermen. This is a popular fishing location for the locals. The first “Paaltjie” can be reached by ordinary vehicle, but thereafter a 4x4 is required.

Some years ago a Pygmy Killer Whale beached itself on the Pelican Point Peninsula. This is normally a deep-sea whale.
The Dolphins that may be seen close inshore are the Atlantic Bottlenose and the Heaviside/Benguella Dolphins. Further out to sea the Common and Dusky Dolphins may be observed, although the Dusky Dolphins sometimes venture close inshore. The Atlantic Bottlenose Dolphins used to come into the Walvis Bay Lagoon at low tide, due now to the shallowness of the lagoon they are only able to venture in on a rising tide. The Heaviside/Benguella Dolphin is usually seen off Pelican Point and is best perceived from a boat.
The best way to mix with these cetaceans is with a non-motor driven craft such as a sea going Kayak. These craft do not seem to stress these mammals like the motorised craft can do when they surround these cetaceans in large numbers, as yet Namibia has no regulations on observing cetaceans; although the Marine Tourist Association have brought out their own regulations to help control distance and time with these wonderful mammals.
There are many Cape Fur Seals at Pelican Point, between 5 to 10,000. This is now a breeding population and from November to February the small pups may be seen being taken into the sea. The seals again, are best viewed from the sea as viewing from the land can be hazardous to the pups.
The water-bird life on the lagoon, along the coast and in the saltpans is prolific, both in the winter and the summer. During the winter months there are as many as 80 to 120,000 birds of between 40 to 50 different species. In the Spring all the Palaearctic birds from the northern hemisphere arrive. We count more than 200,000 birds here during our summer months, of between 50 to 70 different species. The largest number of a single species of Tern that come in from the northern hemisphere are the Common Terns.
Of the Palaearctic shorebirds, the Curlew Sandpiper is the most prolific.
We have anything between 25 to 35,000 during the summer months, depending on how well they have bred in the tundra in the Arctic Circle. The smallest of the shorebirds that come from the Arctic is the Little Stint, which breed in northern Siberia. These little birds weigh around 25 grams. In a straight line it is approximately 15,000 kilometres from where they breed to Walvis Bay in Namibia. We have many other shore birds that come in large quantities from the North such as the Sanderlings, Knots, Grey Plovers and Bartailed Godwits.
Walvis Bay, as a harbour city, plays a strong part in the Namibian national growth and economy. A visit to the Port of Walvis Bay, Namibia’s largest deepwater port, is well worth the effort. Main activities are the import and export of containerised goods, frozen fish, dry and liquid bulk, break bulk and the glamorous passenger liner calls. Entry permits can be obtained at the Security Offices at the Commercial Harbour’s entrance off 13th Road.
THE PORT OF WALVIS BAY
RAMSAR SITEINTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED WETLANDWalvis Bay Ramsar Site is considered the most important coastal wetland in Southern Africa and amongst the top 3 in Africa. It stands out as a birding paradise because of its vast quantities and varied species of waterbirds and Terns that congregate here in the Walvis Bay wetlands from September to April each year. The Walvis Bay Wetlands were declared a Ramsar Site in June 1995. There are large numbers of Greater and Lesser Flamingos, which can be readily seen throughout the year.
The whales that have been entering the Bay and seen off Pelican Point over the last 2 or 3 years makes quite an impressive list.The baleen whales seen here are as follows:• Humpback Whale• Southern Right Whale• Pygmy Right Whale
The toothed and beaked whales that have been seen here are:• Sperm Whale• Orca or Killer Whale• Southern Bottlenose Whale• Cuvier’s Beaked Whale

There are many resident birds that breed here, among them are the Cape Teal, Grey heron, Little and Cattle Egrets and the Black-winged Stilt. The main predators here are the Black-backed Jackal and the Kelp Gull. There are approximately 20 pairs of Jackal that are breeding in the salt pans and on Pelican Point peninsula. Their favoured food appears to be the birds and the odd dead seal pup. The only birds that they manage to catch are those that are sick or wounded in some way, such as a flamingo with a broken leg. The Kelp Gull is an opportunist, it sees a Damara or small plover chick moving on the ground and that is its “grist for the mill”. The Jackal is unlikely to catch these chicks unless he sees them move as they are completely without scent.
Walvis Bay Ramsar Site is an important area, for both the resident and intra African bird as well as the Palaearctic birds, as a plentiful food area. It is a reasonably safe area for the animal life that inhabit this area. It is becoming an important tour stopping off point especially for naturalists, budding scientists as well as those that just enjoy an outdoor life.Source: Keith Wearne –Coastal Environmental Trust of Namibia
Walvis Bay holds about 30 to 40,000 Lesser Flamingos and 25 to 30,000 Greater Flamingos. These birds live for about 35 years in the wild and have been known to live for more than 50 years in captivity. They only mature when they are 5 to 6 years old. They can be easily observed on the Walvis Bay Lagoon just 10 minutes from the docks and 20 minutes from the Walvis Bay airport.
The difference between these birds is not necessarily size, especially amongst the juveniles. The colour of the beak is the way to recognise the different species. The juvenile Lesser Flamingo has a black beak; when adult this becomes a dark maroon with a black tip. The juvenile Greater Flamingo has a pale, almost white beak with a black tip. The adult has a pale pink beak with a black tip. The Greater Flamingo will always be seen nearer the mouth of the lagoon as they feed on invertebrates, while the Lesser Flamingo feeds on algae, especially the blue green algae, which when digested gives that beautiful pink colour to the feathers of the adult Lesser Flamingo.
Walvis Bay Ramsar Site is an extremely important site for the African Black Oystercatcher. This is a significant nursery area for the 1 to 3 year old birds. The African Black Oystercatcher according to the South African Red Data book is “Near Threatened” as there are less than 5000 left in Africa. The African Black Oystercatcher is only found in Southern Africa. The African Black Oystercatcher lives for about 35 years and matures only when it is 5 to 6 years old. The nest is a scrape in the sand where they lay 2 eggs. Only 10 to 20% of the chicks survive to become adult birds.

Henties Bay might be a small coastal town, but it offers a lot of activities to visitors. You can challenge your friends for a round of golf on the dirt golf course or you can go fishing from the shore with numerous famous fishing spots around town. From Henties Bay it is easy to reach Damaraland and go on one of the many 4x4 routes.
Go float in the dead sea just north of Henties Bay or you can go detox in the salt baths at St. Nowhere or just relax in this quiet little town. One thing is for sure, you will never have a dull moment when visiting Henties Bay.

Nowadays, Cape Cross is well-known for its colony of Cape Fur Seals - the most easily accessible in Namibia. The ‘cross’ at Cape Cross is a replica of the one erected by Diego in 1485, to mark his achievement in reaching such a southerly point of the western African coast.
In the wider sense the name Skeleton Coast embraces the entire Namibian coastline, and the term is often used in promotional material to mean any place on the coast, from Oranjemund in the far south to the Kunene Mouth in the far north. Officially, however, the Skeleton Coast extends from Cape Cross northwards to the Kunene River on the Angolan border. Its hinterland consists of the western sections of the Kunene Region, referred to as Kaokoveld and Damaraland prior to Namibian independence in 1990. In earlier years the area was referred to as the Kaokoveld coast, before the countless skeletons of ships and men along its shores gave rise to the evocative name ‘Skeleton Coast’.
History has it that the name of this scenically beautiful but desolate stretch of coastal desert was coined as a result of an aircraft mishap rather than the innumerable ships that came to grief on its inhospitable shores. In 1933 the Swiss pilot, Carl Nauer, on a flight from Cape Town to London, disappeared somewhere along the coast. The late Sam Davis, at the time correspondent for Reuters and the Cape Argus, was covering the event. He suggested that Nauer had probably crashed into the sea or desert and that his bones may one day be found on the Skeleton Coast, the graveyard of countless ships and men.A former CDM employee, James Reid, offers a more romantic theory. He

THE SKELETON COASTMESSUM CRATER: DISTANCE - 246km Follow the C34 in a northern direction and turn inland 2km north of the Cape Cross turnoff. The Messum Crater, a wide flat basin of 25km in diameter, is popular with visitors because of its utter desolation and breathtaking views. Interesting phenomena are huge lichen fields, excellent specimen of the famous desert plant, Welwitschia mirabilis, and many other species of desert plants, archaeological sites like stone circles used by ancient Damara nomadic, interesting rock formations along Messum River.
OMARURU RIVER: DISTANCE - 270km (GPS NEEDED) Follow the D1918 to Spitzkoppe, which towers 1,784 metres above the flat surrounding plains. Fascinating rock formations, rock paintings and a wide variety of plants amidst the almost barren Namib Desert make the Spitzkoppe one of the most interesting places to visit. The trails goes in a south-westerly direction and enters the Omaruru River at Léwater. The skoenklip, a huge boulder in the form of a shoe, makes an interesting halfway stop. Undertake such a trip is during May, at the end of the rainy season, as sudden rain showers may cause the river to flow.
WELWITSCHIA ROUTE: DISTANCE - 200kmTake the D2303 until you reach the Messum River where some of the biggest and best preserved specimen of this wonder plant are growing. The plant is endemic to the Namib Desert and some of them are believed to be 1 000 to 1 500 years old. Although it sometimes appears otherwise, the plant has only two leaves, which grow continually from the crown, even in the absence

The old man declined the lift, indicating that his wish was to die where he was. He said that the coast was called Skeleton Beach and that it had derived its name from the proliferation of whalebones strewn along the vast stretches of beach.
Whatever the origin of its name, this remote northern stretch of the Namib Desert is regarded by connoisseurs as one of the world’s most beautiful and unusual desert wilderness areas, renowned for its untouched, atmospheric and diverse landscape, and the presence of desert-adapted elephant, springbok and gemsbok.
Proclaimed as the Skeleton Coast Park in 1971, today the narrow strip of desert, approximately 500 km long and between 30–40 kilometres wide, is managed as a wilderness reserve. Two fishing resorts – Terrace Bay, a rest camp, and Torra Bay, a campsite – are visited primarily by keen coastal anglers, while the northern section of the park is managed as a wilderness area and can be visited with a private concessionaire who conducts fly-in safaris there.

The leaves are apparently able to take up fog-water, although the root, which extends three metres into the ground, is well adapted to find any available moisture in the gravel where the plant lives. The male and female plants are totally separate. The females have the larger cones, which bear the seeds, while the male cones are smaller but more numerous. The ways of pollination are not precisely clear yet, though it is believed that wasps and other insects play an active role.
DOROS CRATER: DISTANCE - UNMARKED (GPS NEEDED) ± 3 days This route passes through one of the more remote areas of north-western Damaraland, an awesome wilderness where indiscriminate off-road driving unfortunately also left its mark on the sensitive plains. It is recommended that this route be undertaken in a group of experienced 4x4 drivers. The route starts at the so-called Rhino Camp in the Ugab River, run by the Save the Rhino Trust in conjunction with the local community. The route turns north-east through the Doros Crater, the Burnt Mountain, and the Organ Pipes to Twyfelfontein and the Aba-Huab Campsite. There are various detours to take you to other sites of interest.
BRANDBERG WEST - 300km This route follows the C34 to Mile 108 and then the D2303 eastwards across the flat Namib plains with its interesting flora such as the dollar bush, bushman’s candle and Welwitschia mirabilis. The road runs down a tributary of the Ugab River along the Brandberg-West mountains west of the Brandberg Mountain massive. The Brandberg-west mine, an old worked-out tin mine is situated in these mountains. The route eventually reaches the Ugab River Camp (Rhino Camp) on the banks of the Ugab River from where the location and movements of black rhino and the desert elephant in the area between the Ugab and the Kunene Rivers are monitored. This is a good spot to overnight. On the return route to Henties Bay a visit to Cape Cross, where a colony of some 90 000 Cape fur seals is found, is recommended. MINERALS 4X4 TRAIL - MAP AND GPS COORDINATES An old salt mine southeast of Henties Bay aroused the curiosity of many resident sand tourists who have heard of its existence and would like to visit there. The man made salt pans are still clearly visible - be sure to drive around them as they are very porous and vehicles will surely get stuck. Another curious sight is a heap of whalebones next to the mining area - probably dragged all the way from the beach to use the blubber, which might suggest the reason for the boiler. Quartz crystals can also be found.
UGAB MENHIR - 312km (GPS NEEDED) This route is particularly interesting because of the varying landscape - desert plains and interesting rock formations. You are likely to see game such as solitary gemsbok, ostrich or even Hartmann’s mountain zebra. The route mostly follows dry watercourses, criss-crossing through turbidite ridges that look like they are lying on their sides, the result of many layers of mud deposited about 700-900 million years ago by large inland rivers into an early ocean. With the collision of the continents about 100 million years later, these deep-sea mud became folded and compressed and were eventually laid bare by erosion through the ages. This route was named for a megalith curiously stands as a solitary rock in the stark desert landscape, about the height of a man, referred to as the “Menhir” (men meaning “stone” and hir meaning “long”). On your way back along the coast turn off at Durissa Bay where you can see the remains of one of the few shipwrecks still to be seen along the coast, The Winston - a silent witness of the many hapless souls who lost the battle against the treacherous coastline of the Skeleton Coast.

PERMITS: Every person who angles for recreational purposes must be in possession of an angling permit, which can be obtained from the office of Sea Fisheries, Hanganeni Fishing Centre, in Henties Bay, telephone +264-64-500320. Office hours: Monday - Friday 08:00 to 17:00, Saturday, Sunday & public holidays 08:00 - 13:00. A permit for one month is available.
MEANS OF HARVESTING: Only a hook and line (no more than one fishing rod per person and two hooks on the line), a scoop net to lift rock lobsters from the water, a ring net or diving is allowed.
DAILY BAG LIMIT: This regulation determines the daily quota that can be caught by an angler namely: Barbel: 30 • Snoek: 20 • Shark 1 Kob, West Coast Steenbras, Blacktail and Galjoen: 10 in total.
The following sizes are determined for Blacktail, Galjoen, Kob, and Steenbras:
Blacktail: Minimum size of 25 cm;Galjoen: Minimum size of 30 cm;Kob: Minimum size of 40 cm, but not more than 2 individuals longer than 70 cm (head and tail included);Steenbras: Minimum size of 40 cm, but not more than 2 individuals longer than 65 cm (head and tail included).
ROCK LOBSTER: The season and the minimum size remains unchanged, i.e. from 1st November to 30th April, both days included and 65mm carapace length respectively. The maximum number a person may catch and retain, is seven (7) rock lobster per day per permit holder. A person may not harvest any rock lobster between sunset and sunrise. Marine Resources that may be harvested without a fishing permit
a. 1 kg of aquatic plants, other than brown seaweed;b. 50 black mussels;c. 2,5 kg dry weight or 10 kg wet weight of brown seaweed;d. 15 limpetse. 5 molluscs, other than black mussel, limpet, periwinkle or white mussel;f. 25 periwinkles;g. 10 kg of seashells; andh. 25 white mussels that is not passable through a ring with an inner diameter of 38 mm, when it is in a whole state.

TRANSPORT OF FISH: Each angler per vehicle in possession of a permit may transport 3 times the daily bag limit, but not more than 10 of each of the following species: Kob, steenbras, galjoen and blacktail. All four these species must be in a whole state, head and tail included in order to determine the size. That means that each angler in possession of a permit may transport the following amount of fish, regardless of how many persons are travelling in one vehicle:Barbel: 90 • Snoek: 60 • Shark: 3 • Rock lobster: 7, all in a whole state.Kob, Steenbras, Blacktail and Galjoen: 30 in total, but not more than 10 of each species and all in a whole state.

Of the 10 kob allowed, 6 may be longer than 70 cm and of the 10 steenbras allowed, 6 may be longer than 65cm, head and tail included.
One very positive aspect of the regulations is that every person in a vehicle may now transport his/her own quota of fish, which is the cumulative bag for three days, provided he/she is in possession of a permit. This gives a group of people the opportunity to travel with one vehicle and each transporting his/her own quota of 30 fish. Anglers must make sure that they have their permits with them at all times.
