PRINCIPAL’S NOTES
Welcome Back Welcome back to Term 4. I returned to work today. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Standing for the wonderful job he did as Relieving Principal in my absence. He was well supported by our executive team in Mr Newberry and Mr Ptolemy as well as all staff. There were many challenges last term and the solidarity of staff and the support they provided for one another and our students was exceptional.
Parent Teacher Interviews This Wednesday afternoon, our Parent Teacher Interviews will be held from 3:30pm to 5:30pm. Please contact the front office to book an interview, spots are filling fast.
Higher School Certificate Our Year 12 students sit their HSC examinations, beginning with General English (Paper 1) on Thursday 17th October and General English (Paper 2) Friday 18th October and Investigating Science next Monday 21st October. We wish them the best of luck!
Mudgee Sports Day This Friday our Years 3-6 students will participate in the Mudgee Primary Sports Day. They leave school at 8:30am and will return at 3:30pm. Students that normally catch a bus will need to be picked up by a parent or carer.
Power Outage Monday 21st October there will be a power outage from 9am to 2pm. Classes will run as normal.
Year 7 ASPIRE Our Year 7 students have the opportunity to take part in the UNSW ASPIRE event in Dubbo on 24th October. Again we thank the University of NSW for the wonderful events they provide for our students.
Term 3 Events We enjoyed a very special Year 12 Presentation Day event on Wednesday 25th September, awards were presented and each of the classes spoke of their recollections of Year 12. Thank you to Mrs Mulligan and staff for making it a very memorable occasion for our graduating students. Our school celebrated NAIDOC Day on Thursday 26th September. The day began with an official ceremony, followed by various workshops and a sausage sizzle lunch. It was wonderful to have visiting guests and parents, carers and community members to join us on the day. Thank you to Mr Standing, Mrs Cook and Mrs Norris for their organisation.
Term 4 Events Primary State Athletics will be held on 6th and 7th November at Homebush Stadium. We wish Bailey Thompson and Will Duce the best of luck! The Year 12 Formal will be held on the 15th November. We celebrate the Graduation of our Year 12 students with a dinner and formal celebrations at the Memorial Club.
Sun Safety Please remember to pack a hat for your child to wear during PE lessons and throughout the day. The weather is starting to warm up again and hats must be worn when outside.

Year 3/4 It sounds like everyone in Year 3/4 had a fun filled and relaxing holiday. It has been great to hear about lots of holiday excitement in the recounts that we have started writing. In Maths we focused in commutative law of addition and multiplication. Year 3/4 are looking forward to our Science topic this term titled 'Melting Moments' where we will investigate various objects, liquids and solids. Primary students are quite excited for the Mudgee Sports Day on Friday, I'm sure we will have a wonderful time and meet new people! What a great start to the term.
D Soares
Kindergarten Welcome back! Kindergarten students and myself have all had a great holiday break! We are ready to keep reading and writing in Literacy and counting and adding up in Maths. Homework and home readers will begin this week. We will be revising our sounds also. Don’t forget Parent/Teacher Interviews are this Wednesday. Please ring the Front Office to make an appointment. Happy 6th birthday to Bridget, have a fantastic day. I hope we have an enjoyable first week back.
V Parnaby
Year 1/2 Welcome back everyone! Term 4 already and we are excited in 1/2 to get started on our robotics and coding this term. We are on assembly this week and will have something interesting to show! We hope to see you all there!
B Yager
Year 5/6 Welcome back everyone! I hope that everyone had a great holiday and are all feeling refreshed, ready for a big term. In Literacy this week we are focusing on writing explanations. We are focusing on personal goals and explain how we aim to achieve those goals. Our inspiration is Eliud Kipchoge’s amazing achievement of breaking the 2 hour marathon milestone. This week in Spelling we are focusing on the “z” as in zebra sound. This is a consonant sound that has 3 main ways to make this phoneme: “z” as in zebra, “zz” as in buzz, “s” as in his. In Numeracy over the next 2 weeks we are focusing on time. This will include telling the time in both analogue and digital time, looking at time zones and converting between 12 and 24 hour time. Please feel free to quiz your child at home. A massive congratulations to Bailey Thompson on his achievements at Nationals in Darwin last term. All his hard work and effort has certainly paid off! This Friday Years 3-6 are heading to Mudgee for the Primary Sports Day. Please ensure notes have been returned as soon as possible as they are already overdue.

Secondary English This term 7/8 will be looking at the poetry in ‘Alice in Wonderland’. A selection of poems that are centred on creative and fantasy theme will be closely studied. These poems will introduce students to literary exercises, poetic devices, and songs as poetry, whilst educating them on the importance of the written word. In 9/10 we are looking at ‘Representations of School’. This unit explores students’ perceptions of school, teachers and the role of a student, as well as historical and contemporary representations of school, teachers and students in a wide range of texts. A person’s response to a text, person or institution is influenced by their own values, beliefs and assumptions which are, in turn, shaped by their personal, historical, cultural and socio-economic contexts.
Year 11 Standard English students will be starting their Year 12 course work this term. In this common module students develop their understanding of how texts represent individual and collective human experiences through their exploration of Kenneth Slessor’s poems and related texts. They examine how Slessor’s poems represent human qualities, emotions and universal themes such as despair, loss and the march of time associated with these experiences. Students explore how texts may give insight into the anomalies, paradoxes and inconsistencies in human behaviour and motivations, inviting the responder to see the world differently, to challenge assumptions, ignite new ideas or reflect personally.
Students are expected to bring the following items to their English lessons: 1 x A4 sized exercise book, covered
3 x blue pens 3 x black pens 3 x red pens
4 x highlighters 2 x lead pencils
Coloured pencils 1 x ruler
1 x glue stick Please ensure your child is prepared for class. Additionally, every week students in Years 7-10 are given ten spelling words. It is expected that they study these words and submit the definitions for these words every Friday. This is done to improve student vocabulary, which in turn will be reflected in their writing skills. The Secondary English Spelling Program covers outcomes EN4-3B and EN5-3B.

Uniform We have a mandatory uniform which must be worn by all students at Mendooran Central School. There is simply no excuse for students to continually be out of uniform. All uniform is available from the school office for purchase. If you require assistance in purchasing this uniform please do not hesitate to ask. We are able to help supply the correct uniform when needed. Hooded jumpers are not a part of our uniform and therefore should not be worn, this is not only an MCS rule but a Department Policy. This rule also applies to sporting representative jumpers/clothing, tights, short shorts and multi-coloured scarves. Students not in uniform will be questioned as to why they are not complying with the school rules, and they will be given a time period within which they will be required to correct the infraction.

Tennis News Senior tennis comp will start next Monday 21st October with games starting from 7:30pm. Our tennis comp is very social and our clubhouse now has a pool table for all members to enjoy free of cost. We’d really love to see some new players this comp and we really hope to see more 13 - 18 year olds come and play, it’s a lot of fun and a great chance to catch up with friends.
