Floyd Middle School VISION:

A community of actively engaged lifelong learners who are

accountable, productive citizens

The MISSION of Floyd Middle School is to Make a Difference.

FMS BELIEF Statement: At Floyd Middle School, we believe that: All stakeholders (students,

parents, teachers, staff, administration, and community) have the ability and the right to learn in a safe and supportive environment / All stakeholders are responsible for student success / Student learning is maximized when they are challenged with meaningful and engaging learning activities / Individuals are deserving of respect for their unique intellectual, physical, and emotional qualities / It is important

for individuals to take responsibility for their actions / Staff members should work to improve and research educational practices through professional learning opportunities.

Our school colors are black / blue / silver and our mascot is a panther.

Homeroom begins at 8:45. School is in session from 9:15am to 4:15pm.

The school office hours are from 8:30am to 4:30pm. Students should not be dropped off before 8:15am unless supervised by an adult or attending detention at 8am. Study hall is also available from 8:15am to 8:45am. Students report to homeroom at 8:45am until 9:15am. Students must be present in

4 class periods, excluding homeroom, to be counted “present” for the day.

Floyd Middle School began originally as Floyd Junior High School in August 1965. At the opening of the school year, the Floyd building was not completed so students began classes in the Osborne Junior building. After three weeks, a fire destroyed part of the Osborne building, causing Floyd students to be moved to the South Cobb High School campus. Finally, in January 1966, the Floyd building was completed and all 900 students moved into their new school. During the next six years, under the leadership of Principal T. J. Hatcher, Floyd grew to a 1500 student capacity, utilizing 14 portable classrooms to accommodate the overflow of students. In the years since, Floyd has been served by Principals Murray Barber, William T. Wood, Sam Harmon, D.R. Allen, Don Sawicki, Sue Rainey, Jim Snell, Gary Boling, and Lawrence E. Bynum, Sr. As Floyd Middle School continues to grow under the leadership of Dr. Teresa W. Hargrett, Floyd seeks to present stimulating curriculum paired with a positive school climate which will result in the most effective middle school education for its students. Faculty and staff emphasize a forward-thinking approach, encouraging students to focus on college and career preparation. Student participation in many extra-curricular activities, parent volunteerism, PTSA support, and Floyd Partners in Education model stewardship and civic engagement within the school community. Floyd Middle School is a Title I Distinguished School, Cobb STEM Certified School, and has received Honorable Mention for High Flying Schools Award and the 2016 Bronze National Healthy Schools Award.

We expect you to grow in many ways while you are a student at Floyd. You will grow in your knowledge of academic subjects, performance of certain skills, and in ability to get along your peers. Self-discipline is one of the most important aspects of your success at Floyd and our teamwork is focused on helping you develop this sense of responsibility for yourself and your actions.

6th GRADE: Language Arts / Reading, Math, Earth Science, Social Studies

7th GRADE: Language Arts / Reading, Math , Life Science, Social Studies

8th GRADE: Language Arts/ Reading, Math, Physical Science, Social Studies

TEXTBOOKS: Floyd Middle School recognizes that textbooks are but one

of the numerous resources available for excellent educational practices. We teach to the Georgia Performance Standards and use a multitude of resources. Students will have access to textbooks in the classroom.

ACADEMIC CONNECTIONS: In 9 week intervals, students will

take two segments of Connection classes. The Connection classes offered at FMS are Art, Health / Physical Education, Math Support, Read 180, Math 180, General Music (7 / 8), French (8), Spanish (8), Introduction to Spanish, Engineering and Technology, and STEM: Science Technology Engineering Mathematics. Band, Orchestra and Chorus students will take a yearlong course as well as 4 nine-week connection segments.

Connection classes instruct beyond the academic classes. They are designed to integrate and apply the skills and concepts taught in the academic classes by reinforcing critical reading, writing, and thinking skills. The purpose of connections classes: 1) provides middle school students exposure to a variety of courses so that they can better identify interest and refine skills in a variety of hands-on experiences and 2) allows students to select courses appropriately when they reach high school.

Gifted Program: Advanced Content

Cobb County provides services for identified gifted students at all levels. The gifted program is designed to meet the very specific needs of these students and extend competencies in the areas of cognitive skills, learning skills, research and reference skills, communication skills, metacognitive skills beyond the experience of the regular classroom. Cobb’s gifted program is part of the School Improvement Division and is funded by the state. The procedures for identifying and placing students in the gifted program are governed by the State Department of Education.

GUIDANCE PROGRAM

Mrs. Gray (x. 232) 6th, 7th m-z // Mrs. T. Butler (x. 271) 7th a-l, 8th

The primary function of our counseling team is to be a supportive resource for our students in all areas of their development. The counselors are a resource to students, teachers, administrators, and parents. They consider themselves members of the teacher teams as they work with students. It is important for the counselors to be made aware of the classroom performance of their students. They listen to the concerns of parents and respond with positive communication. They find themselves to be mediators in many situations involving students and their peers and parents.

Floyd’s guidance program consists of many components. The following are but a few examples: classroom guidance, individual and group testing, individual and group counseling, conferences, articulation for smooth transition to different school settings, and orientation of new students.

SUPPORT SERVICES: Support services include: instruction for visually impaired students,

instruction for students with impaired hearing, service for those who have speech difficulties, instruction for students with learning disabilities, programs for students with behavior disorders, programs for students who learn at a slower pace, programs for students who are advanced academically, services for students who are homebound for more than two weeks because of medical problems, students who have attendance problems, etc.

TRANSLATIONS SERVICES: Parents, translation and interpretation services are provided by

the International Welcome Center (IWC) in Marietta, GA. The IWC facilitates communication between the international community and local schools. Please call 678-331-3086 for more information and assistance. Thank you. Gracias.)

MEDIA CENTER / LIBRARY: The media center is the hub of the school. Not only does it

contain an excellent collection of fiction and non-fiction books; it also houses a variety of audio-visual equipment and other materials for educational use.

Most books are checked out for two weeks and may be renewed as needed. Reference books and magazines may also be checked out, but for a shorter time period.

Students must always have a media center pass when using the center. Students should have a clear purpose for visiting the media center (such as research, reading, checking out a book, etc.). Students are expected to demonstrate appropriate behavior when in the media center. Students should refrain from disrupting others and should take care of the materials that are being used.

Internet is available from any networking computer in the building. This includes computers in the Media Center, Business Lab, Instructional Computer Lab, as well as classroom computers. The access is provided through a WAN (wide area network) by the Cobb County School District. The district recognizes that electronic media such as the internet offers vast, diverse, and unique resources to both students and teachers. At Floyd, students are trained by the staff in the acceptable use of the Internet, as outlined in the Cobb County Board of Education IFBGE & IFBGR. The portions of the policy pertaining to student activity appear on the next page. The entire policy can be viewed on the Cobb County Public School Web Site (www.cobb.k12.ga.us).

Use of computers, network, and internet at Floyd is a privilege and is for educational purposes only. All users of the network/ internet services must maintain strict compliance with all applicable ethical and legal rules and regulations. Policies IFBGE & IFBGR are strictly enforced. Students found in violation of the policy or guilty of vandalism of computer resources are referred to school administration for disciplinary consequences and /or restrictions of resource use.

Floyd does not allow unsupervised use of the internet. Teachers may include curriculum related internet activities as part of their classroom instruction. In addition, the Cobb County School District provides several approved online resources such as Electric Library, Galenet, and World Book and Grolier Online. Most of these can be accessed at home with user names and passwords that are provided to the students. Galileo (George Library Learning Online) is a web-based virtual library providing access to multiple information resources. Galileo is provided to every public school in the state and students can also access it from home.

Walkers, Car Riders, Band and Orchestra students will be issued a permanent sticker pass on the outside of their agenda. Before releasing Walkers, Car Riders or Band / Orchestra students to get their instruments, students will need to have their agenda books outside of their book bags because their passes will be checked. Students having the agenda out and ready speeds up this process. Once this transition takes place, bus dismissal will follow.

Student Agendas will be issued and treated the same as a textbook. Agendas will be used throughout the entire school year as a communication tool among students, parents, and teachers. If you lose or damage your agenda (folding,

tearing, or removing pages or cover, etc.), you will be required to replace the agenda for a cost of $5.00.

When a student has… Mr Serkedakis (x. 229)

- 2 unexcused or 3 total absences, the homeroom teacher will notify the student.

- 5 absences, excused/unexcused, a letter will be sent home.

- 5 unexcused absences, a notice is sent home advising parents that students may be at risk of a referral to

Juvenile Court for truancy. The school Social Worker and the County Truancy Court Coordinator will also be notified. This is a very serious step in student attendance.

- 7 absences, excused/unexcused, students will meet with the school Social Worker and/or other school

personnel.

- 10 absences, the school Social Worker will write a referral for student and recommend interventions.

We would like to instill in our students the importance of presenting themselves in an appropriate manner with their conduct and their appearance. Students assigned to ISS are still expected to adhere to the dress code. Dress code checks will take place during homeroom and at the bus depot on a daily basis. Students found in violation may be

placed in isolation until appropriate clothing is obtained. A repeat violation is considered an act of insubordination and will result in administrative consequences. Students should come to school dressed in Standard School Attire each day. Students should not bring standard attire in a bag but come dressed in standard attire ready to learn. Pajamas are not to be worn and other prohibited items listed on the next page.

*** The Principal makes the final decision on the appropriateness of appearance.

Any questions about the appropriateness of an item should be discussed in advance with a school administrator. Students will be allowed to wear specific clothing for religious reasons, but parents should discuss this in advance with school administration. The standard dress requirements will be reviewed and modified if necessary by the school administrative team. Casual days and Spirit & Jean Days will be announced throughout the year. Each student will be assigned both a physical education locker and a hall locker near his/her homeroom class area in which to keep books and personal belongings. A sufficient number of locker breaks are provided for students.

Combination Locks: These lockers will have a built-in combination lock.

All locker combinations are changed each year, and only the child with a particular locker will know that locker combination. Students often have problems when they give their combination to a friend. Under no circumstances should a combination be given to a classmate. Additional locks may not be attached to the locker.

Locker inspection: Students and parents are reminded that lockers are provided as a privilege for

students. As such, they are subject to inspection by the school administration. Such inspection or search may occur at any time without prior notification to students or parents. We must assure the safety of each of our students from the presence of dangerous or illegal items or substances.

Personal belongings: Lockers reduce the possibility of loss or theft of students’ belongings.

However, the individual student assumes the responsibility of keeping up with books and personal belongings. We suggest that you clearly label books & belongings. Students should not bring valuable items or excess money to school. MP3, CD/DVD players, electronic games, laser pointers and cameras are not allowed at school events without the explicit permission of a teacher or administrators. Cell Phones must be turned off and not visible on campus during school operational hours. These items will be taken up and kept in the main office. Only a parent can retrieve the items on Friday during office hours (8:30am – 4:00pm). If an item is confiscated on a Friday, it will be returned the following Friday.

Book bags: Book bags will be allowed for the purpose of transporting books to and from school.

Book bags are to remain in the lockers while at school and may not be carried to classes. If a student does not follow proper procedure, consequences will be given. First offense: book bags / totes being collected, given to administration, and returned at the end of the day. Second offense: Parents will have

to pick up the book bag. ISS students may not carry book bags to that class. Also, on the last two days of school book bags are not allowed on the bus.

Students have the opportunity to eat a nutritious meal at a reasonable price. The cost of

breakfast is $1.50 & lunch is $2.60 for students and for adults’

breakfast is $2.00 and lunch is $3.50. It is the responsibility of each student to bring his/her lunch money or a sack lunch. Free or reduced lunch applications will be distributed

on the first day of school and will be available in the front office during the school year.

Students are encouraged to prepay for lunches for the week, month, quarter, or year. Side items can also be purchased. Parents are invited to eat lunch with their children. Please remember to sign in and receive a Visitor’s Pass from the front office. In support of our school lunch program, we ask that you do not bring meals from fast food restaurants when visiting our dining hall.

An additional note from Cobb’s Food & Nutrition Services: You want your child to do his very best in school. One way to ensure that is to make sure your child has breakfast every single day, not just at test time. The morning meal breaks the night’s “fast” and provides nutrients and fuel to energize your student for the day. Some children are not hungry when they get up, and some children do not prepare breakfast for themselves when their parents have already left for work.

School breakfast provides just what they need with delicious choices of cereal, fruit, milk, and hot entrees. You can prepay for breakfast as you do for lunch. Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch will also qualify for free or reduced breakfast. For current prices and updated menus, please refer to the Food & Nutrition Services website. Please visit the Food and Nutrition Services website for MENUS, nutrient analysis, and staff contacts. Go to www.cobbk12.org (click) Lunch Menus (located on the left side of the page). This will take you directly to the Food and Nutrition Services website. The link to the menus is located at the top of the page. Enjoy the website!

NO food items can be taken from the café. Only water is acceptable in a

purchased water bottle with label. Students should not walk around with

any colored drinks in their hands.

LUNCH CHARGES: Students are not allowed to charge lunch at Floyd. Students

will be offered a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and juice or milk if they do not have lunch money. Speak to the Food Services Manager ((770) 819–2454) for more

information.

Students enrolled in Physical Education must have a written letter from a medical doctor to be

exempted from participation. A parent may request that his/her student be excused from participation on a particular day. Lack of participation could result in a lower participation grade.

All students must change their clothing for Physical Education. PE uniforms are available for purchase. Required dress for PE will include a solid GRAY t-shirt or a FMS PE t-shirt with NAVY BLUE athletic gym shorts/ athletic pants and athletic/ tennis type shoes (NO flat shoes). We discourage the use of “name brand” clothing for PE; inexpensive shorts and shirts are much better for physical activity. Each student is provided with a locker and lock in the dressing room. All personal items must be locked up when the student leaves for an activity. Valuables such as purses and wallets should be left in the student’s hall locker.

A note from a physician or parent will not exempt a student from dressing out, unless the request can be justified, but will exempt a student from participating.

** Failure to dress out for PE can warrant an office referral for multiple violations in addition to lowering one’s grade.

No person (including students), firm, corporation, or business shall enter upon school property for any purpose of selling, trading, or bartering merchandise of any kind to a student or employee.

guardian explaining the reason for the absence. All notes must be given to the Attendance Office (not the homeroom teacher) within 3 days of the absence or the absence will remain UNEXCUSED. Absences due to doctor/dentist visits will require an excuse note from the doctor/dentist in order to be excused, as per Floyd Middle School attendance policy.

Students with multiple unexcused absences will not participate in school events.

Students may be temporarily excused for the following reasons: 1. For personal illness 2. For a death or serious illness in the immediate family 3. For a recognized religious holiday 4. For absences mandated by order of governmental agencies 5. For conditions which render school attendance impossible or hazardous

Only students with EXCUSED absences are allowed to get make-up work upon return to school. Students with UNEXCUSED absences can receive zeros for any missed work, as per Cobb County School District Policy. Students will have an amount of days equal to the number of days absent, plus one to make up missed work. It is the responsibility of the student to make up any work missed. If absent from school, contact the homework hotline for assignments. If the absence extends beyond three days, teachers will provide assignments if contacted by parents and given a 24-hour notice. For more information, students should refer to the team management letter and /or class syllabus to understand the procedures for handling work from absences.

... are sick (or become sick) at school: please report to the clinic with a written pass

to see the nurse and use the clinic's phone to call home if needed. Students too sick to return to class will be kept at the clinic until the student can be picked up. and give it to the attendance clerk in the am. Students will be issued an early dismissal pass allowing them to leave class at the appropriate time and report to the Attendance Office for check-out. * To minimize classroom interruptions, unannounced check-outs will only be called during the first or last 5 minutes of class. Parents must sign students out in the Attendance Office when they come to get their children. No student will be released from Floyd to any one not listed on the locator card, unless positive verification is received from a parent authorizing release to another adult. Appropriate identification must be presented. Parents may contact the office to add or delete names at any time during the school year. All check-ins and check-outs are handled in the Attendance Office.

*** Students must be present in at least 4 class periods, excluding homeroom,

... lose a personal item:

In the classrooms, each teacher maintains a lost and found. Lost and found items are also turned into the administrative office and in the PE area. Any lost clothing will be kept in these locations for 3 weeks. If not claimed within that time, it will be laundered and taken to a location to be used by families in need.

... need to be in the hall during class:

Student must have their signed pass / agendas when in the hall during class time.

.. … are moving and need to withdraw:

Parents should notify the Guidance Office 24 hours prior to a student being withdrawn. He/she should either bring a note from the parent, or have the parent call the guidance office (x. 238) and give the information necessary for withdrawal. All textbooks, instructional materials, and debts must be cleared by the student before his/her school records will be sent to the new school.

... need to use a telephone:

Students who are sick as determined by the school nurse will be allowed to call home. Otherwise, students will not be permitted to call home unless it is an emergency. You may not call home for permission to go home with a friend or request lunch money / missing work. Permission to watch movies, ride a bus home with a friend, attend a field trip may not be given over the telephone. Only written or faxed notes are acceptable.

... need to take medication:

Parents must complete an “Authorization to Give Medicine at School Form” (Form JLCD-2) available at school for each medication given. Medication must be in the original labeled container and brought to the school office/clinic by parents/guardian. Parents must inform the school of any medication changes. Over-the-counter medications may be given for up to 10 consecutive days with written parental permission—the school will not supply over-the-counter medications. All medications not picked up by parents by the last day of school will be destroyed. Students may carry inhalers, Epipens or insulin with the proper form on file in the clinic (MANAGEMENT STUDENT HEALTH NEEDS IDENTIFICATION FORM). Also, parents need to know when it is safe to return their student to school, or when to keep them home (please see Form JLC-6 (PROCEDURES WHEN STUDENTS SHOW SIGNS OF ILLNESS OR INJURY). FLY HIGH

Words & Music by E. Menifee

Upon your halls I tread Thinking of new ways To dream and look ahead For the new days Here I pledge to honor scholarship Watch me fly – esteem me high

There’s work to be done and We can do it You give us help and time And see us through it We are aiming for education’s torch Just watch us fly – it’s in our eyes.

To not try is our foe Say ganaramos (we will win) With Character we’ll fight And be the heroes A family, nothing will divide We’ll fly high – Floyd Panther pride

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a fully incorporated way of life at Floyd Middle School. It is about teaching staff and students respectful, responsible, and safe behaviors in order to promote a more positive and productive working and learning environment. Expectations for behavior are taught, modeled, reinforced, rewarded, and re-taught as needed throughout the year. It is our belief that building positive relationships improves our school climate, directly affects student achievement, and greatly deters undesired staff and student behaviors. Rewarding expected behaviors is the truly fun part about PBIS, and there are plenty of incentives such as student recognition, special play days, and prize drawings to name a few. Staff and students also have the opportunity to earn Panther Bucks which, like cash, can be used to purchase items from our school store. To find out more about our PBIS initiatives, visit our Floyd PBIS blog page, or go to www.pbis.org.

All students should exhibit BEST behavior at all times. Character Education words are listed below and highlighted monthly
