PRINCIPAL’S PERSPECTIVES

Welcome to all parents and students to week nine of term three. This is the penultimate week of Year 12 schooling as well as the term. There has been a number of fantastic things happening across the school and the next two weeks are no different. Joseph Gervasi headed off to the State Athletics which were held at Olympic Park this year. After a slightly challenging start to his program he managed an 11th place in the shot put. Well done at this level. The two groups we had visit the school last week have completed their tasks. We now wait to see what the Life Cycle report of the school will look like once it is created and published. The team were very impressed with the Trade Training Centre and the associated facilities. They were a little concerned by the floor situation in some of our ground floor areas across the site. This is an ongoing situation that is under Public Works attention at the moment. I’m quite sure that they will come up with a wonderful solution to the problem. On the technology front our server upgrades were done with very little disruption to normal teaching and learning. Over the next while the school will undergo some further LAN upgrades as we move towards an eT4L server solution for the school. This will give school staff the ability to re image computers and laptops across the site as required. Currently this work is done by a regional team who can only come out on a needs basis while they manage all the schools in the Deniliquin area. As you can imagine this is quite a massive workload. Secondary staff are very busy with finalising results for both our Year 12 and Year 11 students in the lead up to this year’s HSC. They are also focusing on completing reports for this group as well. As a result of the joining of both the normal and compressed mode of delivery in Stage 6 classes. Both Year 11 and 12 students will be sitting their HSC examinations early in term 4. This will give year 11 a welcome break from school until the academic roll over into the 2014 school year in week 5. They will start the final year of their studies in combination with the Year 10 students, who will be at the start of their HSC journey. I’m quite sure that this group will make the adjustments needed to focus on their studies as they transition into their first HSC year.

This time of the year is always full of various levels of emotion as our Year 12 students get increasingly closer to their final days at school. I cannot say that this has been overly evident as yet, but I am sure this will be just around the corner. All the very stressful activities have been done with Major projects and folios marked and returned. All that remains is the critical preparations for the HSC examinations. It is always vital that students take the time to look at past papers and even more importantly see the level of responses needed to get the higher bands in all subjects. I have every confidence that all our students are able to give meaningful answers, the challenge is to get them ready to give the top band answers they really need. Let’s all give them the support and incentive to achieve their very best across the board. Last week I missed the chance to acknowledge the wonderful success of Ashleigh Nelson in gaining an Australian Vocational Student prize for 2012. In truth we had all thought that this had gone by the way side. But not so, her hard work has been recognised and rewarded. This week, during SASS recognition week, sees the school take the time to acknowledge just how important our SASS staff are to the running of the school. This includes all our office staff, Peter, Michelle, Sharon, Sue, Jo, Pam, Woody our AEO, Drew the GA and Farm Assistant, with help from Loui and the large team of SLSO’s, Vicki, Lloyd, Steven, Zoe, Lorraine and Sarah who work in the classroom with our students each day. This is quite a formidable team who we all rely on every day. Please take the time to thank them for all their fantastic efforts each day. As we approach the end of term I encourage all parents to stay on track with the multitude of activities that make up our weekly in school schedule. Sometimes it’s a real struggle to keep up with the kids and their endless energy. I hope we all have a great week and manage the seemly endless tasks with ease and good humour. All the best.

Primary Pondering It was so fantastic to see a large number of parents and community members at assembly on Friday. Our year 5/6 students showed that they have been very busy in the classroom learning about gold, writing poems, completing art related activities and even singing. Opposite this column are the students that received Assistant Principal Awards. Due to the change in weather we have implemented our No Hat/No Play policy in Primary. All students are required to wear a School bucket hat or they will sit under the shade sail. Please note that we expect all students to wear their hat before school as well as during recess and lunch. Well done to all the students who remembered to bring their hats for the start of week nine, only five of our students were missing their hat at our Monday morning assembly. On the 3rd September our year six students participated in a ceremony to celebrate Australian National Flag Day. The students commemorated the first occasion that our national flag was flown, 3 September 1901. Students discussed the features of our flag, where we would see it flown as well as how the winning design was announced by Prime Minister Edmund Barton. They then participated in the flag raising ceremony. (See photo on page 7)

Last week, Year 12 Primary Industries students travelled to Canowindra to participate in an intensive piggery field trip. The boys were involved in feeding, feed preparation, pig husbandry, reproductive technology, cattle feeding, electric fencing, etc, etc, etc. The boys were well looked after and enjoyed the opportunity to experience a very different part of NSW. The property is owned by Mr White’s parents, with Mr White’s brothers taking over the teaching situation for a couple of days. Ryan Campbell was the only casualty, finding the aromas of the pig sheds and the sights of certain practices adversely affecting his digestive system.

Australian National Flag Day

Australian National Flag Day was celebrated across our nation on Tuesday, 3 September 2013.

This day commemorates the first occasion that our national flag was flown, 3 September 1901. On this day, Prime Minister Edmund Barton announced the winning design from a competition to select our new nation’s flag.

Our flag represents our nation when it is flown both in Australia and across the world. This day is a wonderful opportunity for us to reflect on how our flag unites us as a nation, celebrating pride in our achievements.

Recognition could be given to the symbols of Australia’s history represented by the flag including the Commonwealth Star, the Southern Cross and the flag of the United Kingdom.

Primary students are pictured after watching the Primary School Captains raising the flag.

Joseph Gervasi travelled to Sydney on Thursday 5

th September to compete in the CHS

Athletics at Olympic Park, Sydney. Joseph competed in both the 15 year old boys Discus and Shot Put at a first class stadium against many NSW schools. Firstly on Friday, Joseph, accompanied by both Mum and Dad, threw the discus and came in 17

th followed on Saturday, competing in the Shot Put coming an exciting 11

th.

Well done to Joseph for travelling such a long way and competing at such a high level.
