FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents and Students we are now in week six of this ten week
term.
It has been an exceptionally busy time at the College for staff and
students alike. Students have attended subject information sessions
run by our teachers, these provide students with important advice
on what each subject has to offer in 2017 and assist students to
make an informed choice on pathway and subject selections.
Furthermore, we conducted several course information evenings
last week for Year 11, Year 10 and Year 9 students. These sessions
are vitally important in providing direction, advice and procedural
information to both students and parents. This is especially
significant this year, as we have moved to a new online system of
subject selection. If you were not able to make these meetings and
require assistance, please contact your sub school leader, Mr
Phelan – Senior School or Mr Hosking – Junior School.
Interim reports are due for completion this week, they will be
uploaded to Compass at the end of the week. Keep a lookout for
these as they provide a great snapshot of how your child has
progressed for the first part of semester two. The interim reports will
be complemented by parent teacher interviews on Thursday 8th
September and again, I encourage all parents to attend.
Iinformation on the booking module will be available soon. Please
note that teachers have limited times available throughout the
afternoon and evening, so it’s important that you log on and book
session times promptly once the codes are posted. This will be sent
via a Compass newsfeed in the coming weeks.
Access to the College via Rosehill Road is currently restricted and
traffic has been diverted to either Sapphire Street or Albert Street. A
collapsed section of road inside the College needs to be repaired
and we have been informed by engineers that the road cannot be
used as a thoroughfare for vehicles. Consequently our four buses
are now parking at the corner of Albert and Ida Street after school. I
urge parents and senior students who drive to school to avoid this
area and to park in the adjoining street(s) further away, such as
Vaynor or Teague Street. Moonee Valley Council has been
tremendous in assisting the school with traffic management and will
continue to do so until the repairs are finalised.

Japanese Student Visit 2016
Ten students and three teachers from our sister
school Kogakkan High were visitors at our school
from 27th July to 5th August. Although their stay was
short, the Japanese students, their host students and
buddies attended a number of excursions. Both
Rosehill and Kogakkan students miss each other
already and there were lots of tears at both the
farewell party and the airport. Rosehill host students
were, Mitchell Frasca, Matthew Turner, Nikala
Bervanakis, Tahlia Bawden, Charlotte Nunns, Franceis
Caparas, Tuana Kahraman and Shannon Wray.
Students who helped as buddies were Billie
Tektonopoulos and Misshelly Chen. I would like to
thank all the families who supported our exchange
program. I would also like to express thanks to all the
teachers for their support of the program, in
particular, Mr Soumalias, Ms Snow, Ms Kelly, Mr Vella,
Mr Apiromkasem, Ms Russell, Junior Coordinators and
music teachers for the special assembly, Ms Liakakos
and Ms Adam for teaching EAL classes and Mrs
Harbourd for hosting two students.

A Presentation to Year 12 VCAL Students on
Gambling
As part of their outcome on issues that affect our
community, Year 12 VCAL students have been
studying one of the most serious social problems in
our state: gambling. The statistics on gambling are
startling! Since 1992 Victorians have spent 50 billion
dollars on the pokies. There are over 200,000 poker
machines in Australia with the majority (100,000) in
NSW. Victoria has only 24,000 machines in
comparison, but this does not stop Victorians
spending 2.6 billion dollars on the pokies each year.
One billion of this money goes to the State
Government who uses 150 million for gambling
services such as hotlines.
To discuss the issue of gambling, our class today had
the pleasure of welcoming Mario, a reformed
gambler who spoke to the students openly about his
experience. Mario started gambling on the horses
when he was 16 years old. He had a part-time job
washing dishes which earned him $100 a week and
this went straight to his addiction. He also found
himself stealing from his parents and his sister (he
stole her flute and sold it without her knowledge) to
feed his addiction. Mario was a self-employed
landscaper/paver by the age of 20 and this allowed
him the flexibility of earning cash which again went
straight to gambling. His parents and eventually his
wife were aware of his gambling, but were not
aware of the severity of his addiction. Gamblers are
savvy enough to hide the truth. Gambling soon took
over Mario’s life. It affected his diet, he would not eat
for hours on end and then go on a binge at
McDonalds to drown his sorrow when he lost money.
He started to put on weight. His business started to
fall apart, he couldn’t manage payments and he fell
into depression. Eventually at the age of 32, having
lost over $400,000 to his gambling addiction and with
his wife on the verge of leaving him, Mario reached
his lowest point and decided to take back his life. He
reached out to a gambling hotline (interestingly, only
10% of gamblers will ever seek help) and started his
first steps towards his salvation. That was four years
ago. Mario has since taken up marathon running as
his new focus. The students all listened to Mario’s
engaging story and asked many questions, hopefully
they will take note of his experience and think about
it if they are tempted to gamble.

North West Gaming
North West Gaming is a console gaming group that
runs regular gaming nights at the Avondale Heights
Library and Learning Centre. The group is run by
eight administrators, three of them attend Rosehill,
Kayla Beaconsfield (Year 10), Frank Cutajar (Year 12)
and Lawrence Duncan (Year 9). The gaming nights
are held every second Monday 3.30 – 8pm.
Earlier this year the group wrote a proposal and
applied for a grant through the Moonee Valley
Council, and in May they received a grant of $3,500!
The money is being used to buy gaming consoles
and games, and also cater for the gaming
tournaments held during the school holidays.
Mmmmm – pizza. They also provide prizes for the
tournament winners for First, Second and Third places
FANTASTIC. More goodies shall be coming in the
future, but only if they have your most amazing
support.
For more information you can contact the
group on [email protected] or on

Visiting Author - Michael Pryor
On Tuesday 9th August, Michael Pryor, noted author
of fantasy and science fiction, came to our school to
talk to Year 7 students. He spoke to us about his
process of writing a book, and the preparation tasks
needed to create a book. In particular, he explained
how book covers are designed.
Michael told us some funny stories and showed us a
couple of magic tricks. The stories he told were
gripping, and he showed how he uses his real life for
his books and story writing. He explained that if we
start our writing career or any career now we can
become something big like him, if you put enough
time and effort into it.
After lunch, a small group of students attended a
writer’s workshop with Michael. He showed us ways
to plan stories and how to create names and titles.
Everyone who attended the workshop enjoyed the
experience. Overall, students came away with
positive comments and fresh ideas.

Trip to Japan Program for Years 9, 10 and 11 students in 2017
Would you like your child to experience the beauty of the Japanese
culture? How about joining us on the 2017 Trip to Japan? All students are
welcome regardless of the language they are studying at school.
Highlights of the trip will include a visit to Tokyo Disneyland, beautiful
historical places in Kyoto and the peace park museum in Hiroshima. We will
also visit Kogakkan Junior High School, our sister school in Mie prefecture,
and stay with their families. The last trip was extremely successful and
students who have taken part in this program have found it to be one of
their most rewarding experiences.
The trip to Japan will take place in May 2017. We intend to depart around the last week of May and return the
end of the first week of June.
The cost of the trip is approximately $5,075 (subject to change), however this will decrease if additional students
participate. The tour cost includes: return economy airfares, 6 night hotel accommodation, 6 breakfasts and a 7
day rail pass, Tokyo Disneyland entrance and all insurances.
Return the slip attached to Ms Snow or Mr Hayakawa at the College if you are interested in joining us!
If you would like additional information on the homestay program please do not hesitate to contact us.
