INTRODUCTION

Blu-ray Disc (official abbreviation BD) optical disc storage medium to supersede the DVD format. standard physical 12 cm plastic optical disc, developed by Blu-ray Disc Association, group representing makers

of consumer electronics, computer hardware, and motion pictures. During the high definition optical disc format war, Blu-ray Disc

competed with the HD DVD format. Toshiba supported HD DVD, conceded in February 2008,

releasing their own Blu-ray Disc player in late 2009. As of June 2009, more than 1,500 Blu-ray Disc titles available in

FEATURES

With BD we can: Record HDTV without any quality loss. Instantly skip to any spot on disc. Record any program while watching other on the disc. Create playlists. Edit or reorder programs recorded on the disc. Automatically search for an empty on the disc to avoid

recording over the program. Access to web to download subtitles and other extra

features. And many more…..

FORMAT OF BD

It comes in four different formats: BD-ROM (read only) : for reading

recorded content. BD-R (recordable) : for PC data storage. BD-RW (rewritable) : for PC data

storage. BD-RE (rewritable) : for HDTV (high

definition television) recording.

TYPES OF BD

SINGLE LAYER: Can hold data upto 25/27 GB that means 2hrs of HD video or about 13hrs of standard video.

DOUBLE LAYER: Can hold data upto 50GB that means 4.5hrs of HD video or more than 20hrs of standard video.

WORKING OF BLU-RAY DISC

Discs store digitally encoded video and audio Information in pits , spiral grooves that run from the center of the disc to its edges .

A laser reads the other side of these pits to play the movie or program that is stored on the disc.

The more data that is contained on a disc, the smaller and more closely packed the pits must be.

WORKING OF BLU-RAY DISC Contd…

The smaller beam focuses more precisely, enabling it to read information recorded in pits that are not only 0.15 microns long this is more than twice as small as the pits on a DVD.
