CFAY HOLDS VIRTUAL TOWN HALLCFAY HOLDS VIRTUAL TOWN HALL
Story and photo by CFAY Public Affairs
Capt. Rich Jarrett, Commander, Fleet Activities Yokosuka’s (CFAY) commanding officer, conducts a virtual town hall via Facebook Live eliminating the need of having a large group attend the town hall, thus enforcing the current safety measures involved with protecting the community from the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) by physical distancing. Below are some of the most popular questions and answers.
1. When will the library be open?A: The library will be open for check-in and check-out services starting this weekend. The hours are: Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Face masks will be required, only 20 people will be allowed in the library at a time, and only one family will be allowed in the children’s room at a time. Computers, copying, and printing services will not be available.
2. Can kids play with a friend or two if it’s in their own yard?A: Not right now, we should not be mixing family units together because that’s how the virus could potentially spread.
3. What are the rules for the child development center?A: Currently the CDC is offering a limited service in that it is operating at its full capacity for mission essential personnel. We cannot accommodate all mission essential personnel right now. What we have done is open it up so that about 25 children can be served, prioritizing around parents’ work schedules. We are looking to expand this service sometime in the future.
4. Are the preventative measures in place stopping the spread of COVID-19? Are cases increasing?A: I can say without a doubt, we have slowed the spread through our activities here. That does not mean that the cases are not increasing, however the cases are increasing slower than we’ve ever seen before, and increasing at a rate that is not exponential, and in fact, is less than a linear increase. That means our curve is flattening.
5. Are employees who live off base required to keep a log of close contacts?A: For U.S. government employees, the answer is yes. The USFJ order for close contact reporting is in effect for all of our folks. We are asking everyone’s support in this because lessons learned from around the world, locations that have had the most success have the best contact tracing measured implemented.
6. Why can’t I have food delivered to the gate on main base, but folks in Ikego can?A: Some of our policies were not designed to necessarily be equal, between folks on different bases, but they were designed around people who have more limitations than others. There are fewer food options in Ikego, to include a small mini mart, and so to compensate for that, Ikego residents have a few more options off base, within a three kilometer limit, and the ability to get some food delivered.
