publications that build community

my hometown

They’re like songs on the radio that you just can’t get out of your mind, those little overused sayings that you often consider meaningless, sometimes irritating and usu-ally universal. Most often I think of old clichés including, “Birds of a feather flock together” and “There’s no point in crying over spilt milk” when I think of someone very special in my life - Mom.

Do you remember promising yourself that you would never turn into your mother? Once, she knew everything, and then for awhile she knew nothing, and then every-thing again. Adulthood has certainly changed my per-spective. Now, I see characteristics of myself in my own daughters’ personalities, and not to scare you girls, but one day, you just might see me in you, too.

This month, My Hometown Estrella would like to honor Mom, along with all of the special teachers in this community. The following pages provide some special gift ideas for teachers and moms, coming directly from our neighbors. Enjoy gathering gift ideas and savor an appreciation story about a teacher/coach who went the extra mile to unite a girl’s softball team.

As we say goodbye to spring training baseball games, graduating seniors at our local high school, and those amazing daytime high temperatures in the 70’s and 80’s, we say hello to summer and another swim season. We invite you to sign up with Aqua-Tots swim school for a variety of water-related classes that will be hosted at the Starpointe Residents Club. And, as the mercury rises, don’t forget to schedule a check-up on your air conditioning systems with Steve and Lynn Munier, local business owners of AirNow Cooling & Heating.

I hope you will enjoy the exciting events happening in Estrella this month! I’d be delighted to hear from some fathers in the community. Contact me at [email protected] and tell me about a memora-ble Father’s Day experience to share in our June issue.

And finally, Happy Mother’s Day Mom (cause I know you’ll be reading)! Thanks for all that you’ve done for me! Don’t worry; I’m keeping the clichés alive. No mom, I wasn’t born in a barn -- and yes mom, I now realize that money doesn’t grow on trees!

Hanna Atkins’ father isn’t ashamed to admit it, but he does tuck his chin a bit, when he says that his eleven-year old daughter can beat him at a game of golf, almost any day. As a matter of fact, Hanna has become a natural winner in tournament competition over the past two years. She recently grabbed first place in her age divi-sion at the Rolling Hills Golf Course in Tempe’s Jr. L.P.G.A. Golf Tournament early in March with a score of 41 strokes for 9 holes. This win was followed by four previous, in tournaments that included the Tempe Invitational and the Southwest Junior Golf Association of Arizona tournaments last summer.

Hanna, a Westar Elementary School sixth grader, has a handicap of “11” and in just two short years of playing has placed in the top five finishers routinely. She’s definitely a name to watch. You might get to know her as “Tigger,” named after the stuffed animal club cover and the stuffed mascot that hangs from her personal golf cart -- the cart that takes her to and from practice four times per week -- the cart she’s not even old enough to drive! Mom and Dad have completely dedicated them-selves to chauffeuring the sportster to and from the Golf Club of Estrella, where she’s become a neighborhood celebrity during her practices. Her friends at the Golf Club include: General Manager, Tom Cortabitarte, who visits with Hanna after practices - usually offering up a few cold sodas; her first instructor, Trevor; and various members of the Estrella Foothills High School golf team who would love to have her swing added to their high school roster. Hanna, a Filipino with Irish decent, has an amazing swing and has been compared by a previous coach, Ryan Martin, to Asian golfer, Michelle Wie.

It’s not uncommon for Hanna to draw a crowd when she and her dad hit balls at the driving range prior to a tournament. The scene is set as Hanna and her dad hit a bucket of balls at the driving range in order to familiarize themselves with a course. Hanna usually offers tips to her dad to improve his stroke and ends up with a surrounding audience of tip seekers.

Two of Hanna’s favorite professional golfers include Paula Cramer,

known as the Pink Panther and Natalie Gulbis. Hanna says that she and Natalie have the same personalities, and she’s also fond of Natalie because both lived in Las Vegas. The eleven year old follows the two professionals when-ever they come to the valley for the L.P.G.A. (Ladies Professional Golf Association).

Hanna’s summer calendar is filled with tournaments and she will be competing in the JGAA. She’s ambidextrous and says that she has good balance, making golf “easy.” She enjoys challenging herself mentally and says, “It’s great getting out on the course, knowing it’s only you out there. There is no referee switching the game around. You can just med-itate and challenge yourself. And it is wonder-ful smelling the fresh cut grass.”

The sixth grader’s goals for the future are to maintain an honor roll status in high school, knowing that it will help her obtain a scholar-ship. She strives to improve her chipping skills and claims driving and putting are two of her strengths.

Hanna was just nine years old when her parents realized that she was a natural at golf. “She’s always had an extra gift for sports,” recalls her father, Kim. She’s also great at water and snow skiing, tennis, swimming, surfing, skateboarding, BMX and sailing. She earned a championship in BMX bike racing at age 9 and she was a member of the undefeated girl’s basketball team at Westar Elementary school last season. If you’d like to challenge Hanna in a sport that you might be able win, try ping pong. Hanna claims that’s her “weak link.”

With a room filled with professional golf memorabilia, including a wall of autographed golf balls and posters of her icons and a summer cal-endar filled with golf tournaments, the future appears busy and bright for this young athlete. Hanna is working hard to fulfill a dream to play in the L.P.G.A. someday. In the meantime, before she turns into that superstar, she’s also busy being a sixth-grader. When asked what else she likes, besides golf, Hanna age appropriately replied, “I like pancakes!”

teacher appreciation story

Hats off (and then on again) to the many outstanding teachers in this community, as we recognize Teacher Appreciation month! One special high-school educator, Lisa DeCota, recently combined coaching and culinary with a gesture that turned the entire girls junior varsity softball team’s attitude around. Because of her thoughtfulness and creativity, the JV softball team players have not only transformed their attitudes, but they’re now looking forward to the roster ahead and are unified with a renewed team spirit.

It all started after the team’s second agonizing seasonal loss to Coolidge. Was it the two losses or springbreak fever that had the girls in a slump about coming to practice? Coach DeCota wasn’t sure. But as she drove home from practice one evening, she knew that the team needed a “pick me up.” How could she turn things around? It’s not as if she wasn’t dedicating enough time of her own. After all, her days begin early at the high school with her culi-

nary classes. Then, it’s on to softball practice until 5 pm and then it’s time to shop for food and prepare les-son plans for classes again -- not to mention traveling days during softball sea-son. Like many teachers in our community, Lisa’s days are student-focused, adding up easily to twelve hours, routinely. “Ah ha,” she thought. “I’ll put together

a unity lunch for the girls, right after early release and before practice.” That evening, she called all the team members and planned an Italian pasta and salad lunch for the team. They could dine together in the school’s El Lobo Cafe and get to know each other more personally off the softball field. The response was overwhelming! The girl’s accepted the invitation graciously and all fifteen were present for the pre-practice feast!

Lisa DeCota is new to Estrella Foothills High School this year. She has her Master’s degree in education and is a hands-on culinary expert, leaving her successful bistro “Belvederes” in Prescott, Arizona to return to the Valley. She’s also spent a number of years in a corporate position with the University of Phoenix. After extensive hand surgery, she’s settling into her new teach-ing and coaching positions at EFHS. She currently teaches Culinary Arts at the high school, as well as coaches fifteen amazing young ladies in a sport that she has played since she was six years old, softball. With help from her assistant, Coach Boyer, Coach DeCota is becoming an expert at changing her toque (chef ’s cap) and softball hat, back and forth, daily. She’s excited about the pursuit to turn junior varsity players into varsity players with expert advice from coach “B” and Coach Godfrey at the varsity level. Their mentor-ing has been extremely welcomed by the new junior varsity coach.

Under the supervision and direction of Chef DeCota and Chef Thelen, the Culinary Arts classes at EFHS prepare breakfasts for the school district’s Board of Director’s meetings and they are planning desserts which will be served at this year’s prom. Stay tuned as Chef DeCota plans to host private cooking classes, including a “Mommy and Me” cooking extravaganza for community members. Lisa is pleasantly surprised by the cooking talents of many of her culinary students. “The kids that really want to learn---- REALLY want to learn,” says Chef DeCota.

In her bits of free-time, Coach/Chef DeCota enjoys riding her motor-cycles, a Yamaha 250 and her Harley, throughout the mountains of Prescott, Arizona. And, yes, motorcycle riding requires her to change to yet another kind of hat (helmet). Thank you, Lisa DeCota, for your dedication of service to students and young athletes in our community!

mother nature is turning up the heat

As the temperature rises rapidly in the desert this month, we’ll be depending our air conditioning systems for relief. Now is the time to sched-ule a pre-season maintenance check-up to ensure proper function of your air conditioning units. Local experts at AirNow Cooling & Heating offer the following informational tips about your air conditioning system:

• People can’t go without air conditioning and yet, sometimes the A/C system is something that they neglect. We encourage tune-ups as a preventative measure. This removes the dirt and grime that builds up around the critical working components. It can be compared to try-ing to run a marathon while breathing through a straw. Tune-ups can increase the efficiency of a system. So even though your unit might work ‘just fine,’ it may not be as efficient as it could be.

• Maintenance is highly recommended at least once per year, especially after the unit is older than three years. We offer three different levels of preventative maintenance which we call tune-ups, starting at $39 depending on the age of the unit.

If you are considering a new unit, here are some things to think about:ENERGY EFFICIENCY – Higher SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency

Ratio) ratings mean higher efficiency. Ten or so years ago, the 10 SEER was the best you could get, now it goes up to 16. A rating system developed by the U.S. Government to indicate the efficiency level of cooling equipment.

TAX CREDITS – There are energy tax credits available from the gov-ernment for the purchase of new equipment. This is a good website to inves-tigate: www.energystar.gov. Also, discuss this with your tax professional.

SHOULD YOU REPAIR OR REPLACE? Our recommendation would depend upon the cost of the repair in relationship to the age of the unit. Industry standard for the useful life of an A/C unit is 19 years. In Arizona, it is often less because of the heat. Heat batters the unit and in the dog days of summer, the unit is probably running 24/7 which also grinds out its life. The formula we use is based on some industry wide standards so repair would be recommended if your unit is less than six years old and the repair is $800 or less. If the cost of the repair is over that amount, consider a replacement. As the unit gets older, the formula in terms of the ratio of cost and age decreases to the point where if the unit is 11 years old or older and the cost of the repair is $200, replacement should be seriously considered.

For more information about how heating and cooling systems work, visit www.airnowac.com. We have pictures, frequently asked questions and a glossary of terms on the website. We offer a 10% discount on repairs or cost of new equipment to our Estrella neighbors. You can also see us at the Farmers Market in May or contact us at 602-320-0488. Or to schedule service 24/7, contact 623-755-6651.

putting Your Best face forward Submitted by Teri McCallum, Mary Kay Independent Beauty Consultant

It’s not hard to get overwhelmed with everything going on these days - the depressed economy and trying to balance a family with a career and other commitments. Especially as women, we live fast-paced, highly-stressful lives. In the pro-cess, we neglect to take time out for ourselves – spiritually, emotionally, and physically. You may even look at yourself in the mirror and wonder what happened to that young, vibrant woman you once knew.

We all could use a little boost without breaking our budgets. In my busi-ness, I’ve learned that women can forego designer handbags, shoes, a new car, or even vacations, but not skin care and makeup. I am always amazed at how far an eye shadow, lip-gloss, or perfume will go to boost a woman’s self-confidence. The following are simple suggestions sure to bring out a positive change of attitude. These pointers will help you look younger, feel better, and they won’t drain your pocketbook:

Wash and moisturize your face every day – morning and night. A friend who never used to wash her face at night, recently told me that now she does and she actually sleeps better! No more waking up with makeup on your pillow.

Exfoliate. Scrubs, masks, or microderm abrasions will remove dead skin cells that dull your skin and will reveal brighter, healthier, younger looking skin.

Try new colors! Something that you may not have considered before or would dare to try. It is easy to get stuck in a rut and use the same old standby. Experiment a little, be adventurous; you might find out that you like it and when you do, LOOK OUT WORLD!

Do some spring-cleaning in your makeup bag. Throw away any make up or skin care products that are older than 2 years – especially eye makeup. Mascara should be tossed out if older than 3 months! Also, wash your makeup brushes monthly. An artist doesn’t paint a masterpiece with gummy brushes.

Spring is a time of renewal. As you shake off the last vestiges of winter, think about implementing these easy-to-do, low-cost tricks for a healthier, younger looking you. You’ll be glad that you did! Check out the outstand-ing lines of makeup and skin care products that Mary Kay offers by visiting www.marykay.com.

Why are Resident cards so important?

first, your card identifies you as a resident of estrella. the staff will check to see if your membership is active. next, we track the usage of the club amenities including swirls café so we know if we have enough staff at any given time to provide you with the best possible service. we can also determine if club hours should be increased due to usage. last, our busy waterpark season is here and the lines can get long. if everyone has their cards in hand, the process can be faster and you will be on your way to cooling off under the Big Dipper. as always, remember your cards and your sunscreen. we hope to see you soon!

The Estrella Safety Awareness Team

the estrella safety awareness team would like to provide you with information from the “red Badge program.” the purpose of the program is to aid the community in having the necessary medi-cal information readily avail-able in the event of an emer-gency situation. the “e-pack” is a means of communicating vital information to rescuers in an emergency. working with cBs channel 5 news, Bashas, and the governor’s Office of highway safety, estrella has this valuable tool to use in our com-munity. the “e-pack” is avail-able at no charge. stop by the community services Office and pick one up today or visit www.kphO.com/e-packs for a print-able version.

Cultivating Tress to MaturityA message from DLC Resources, Inc. Landscape Management

after planting your new tree, you have the responsibility of cultivating it to maturity. Often, we think nature will take care of new trees for us, when in fact; trees planted in a residential setting need special attention through the first few years.

During the first year of growth, Dlc resources, inc. encourages leaving as many limbs on the tree for as long as pos-sible, including those growing up and down the trunk. keeping extra limbs provides the maximum amount of leaf surface to manufacture food. this enables the trunk of a young tree to grow stronger more rap-idly. some pruning may be required during the first year. this includes removing dead or broken branches, a competing leader, branches touching the ground or any sprouts (also known as suckers) growing directly out of the base of the trunk. ideally, you should avoid pruning in the first year unless absolutely necessary since trees are best left un-pruned until after their first year of growth. after the first year, grab the trunk of the tree and give it a good shake. if the ground around the base of the tree does not move, it is safe to remove the stakes.

During the second and third years of growth, trees still require minimal pruning. they continue to need the maximum amount of leaf surface to produce energy. there are specific things to focus on when pruning a tree during this growth period. make sure branches are not touching; rubbing branches can result in open wounds that may lead to disease. remove only the bottom branches roughly to knee height. You can also start to thin the canopy by taking out a few branches here and there so your tree will be able to better withstand the monsoon winds. remember, it is important to prune cautiously as it takes years for a tree

to develop strong trunk and branch structure.

The Drogaris family came to Estrella all the way from Marlboro, New Jersey in August of 2008. Tom, Darlean and their sons, Nicolas (sometimes called Nico) and TJ (short for Thomas John), have built a home in the Vistas, just across from South Lake. Tom and Nicolas arrived two weeks prior to Darlean and TJ, so that Nico could start fourth grade at Estrella Elementary School on time. TJ decided to attend the University of Arizona in Tucson to be near his family. TJ is an honors freshman, studying Business Administration.

Darlean recalls feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the changes during her family’s first few months in Estrella. “The Arizona adventure is definite-ly different than my previous Eastern lifestyle,” says Darlean. After all, she’s used to being just five minutes from a major shopping mall, a half an hour from the Jersey Shoreline and amusement parks, and fifty minutes from New York City and Philadelphia. Yet the Drogaris’ decided to include Arizona in their newest quest for adventure for the next phase of their lives.

Among many kind new acquaintances and neighbors, the Rosenbergers opened their home for a Thanksgiving dinner celebration to help ease the pain of missing their family and friends in the East. The Drogaris’ are also grateful for the kindness shown by staff members at Estrella Mountain Elementary School, especially Mrs. Griffith and Mrs. Adams, who have helped Nicolas adjust and excel in school.

the drogaris family

Besides making it a point to have dinner together regularly, the Drogaris family enjoys rental movies at home, a movie night out, seeing a baseball game, hiking and biking. Tyler Perry movies are a favorite of Darlean’s while the men in the family enjoy any action flick. And, as a ritual, the boys never miss the TV show “24” on Monday nights.

Nico quickly made friends at school and with his new neighbors. He enjoys playing basketball and baseball. He’s sometimes coached by his dad, Tom, who rarely misses a practice or a game. Tom also loves playing golf with his sons. This is one reason why the family moved to sunny Arizona.

Tom and Darlean first met when Darlean taught aerobics at the cor-poration where Tom was employed. He recently retired from a financing position. Darlean worked at AT&T during the day and taught classes in aerobics at night. While working to help keep employees healthy and active, she met Tom in class. The two have been married for twenty years.

The Drogaris family is exploring Arizona this spring on day hikes through the Estrella and White Tank Mountains. They are looking forward to a visit from friends from New Jersey later this spring and plan to take them horseback riding -- a true “out West” experience for their Eastern pals. Darlean is currently collecting information on other parts of Arizona too, in hopes of exploring the variety of climates and scenery throughout the state. So far, the family has driven as far west as California and as far south as Rocky Pointe, Mexico.

The Drogaris family enjoys Estrella’s “easy lifestyle,” the beauty of the lakes surrounding the community and the mountains surrounding this great neighborhood. The beautiful reddish-pink sunsets never cease to amaze them, along with the star-studded night sky.

As the economy, the home market, and our personal and professional lives remain very much in flux, home decorating isn’t exactly a top pri-

ority to many people. That’s a shame, since few homes are ever completely “done,” and almost any space can use a freshening up come springtime. In the spirit of the season, and the times, here are some decorating ideas that won’t cost you much more than a can of paint. Because no matter what’s happening in the world, life’s too short to not live well.

brighten up the surroundings with a coat of paint. Thankfully, paint is still one of the most economical ways to make a change in a space – especially if things don’t go as planned, resulting in another application. If there’s no time to paint a whole room, consider doing one accent wall in a different hue. This is a quick way to add impact without disrupting an entire room for days on end. It’s also a fun way to use a more intense shade without overwhelming a space. Paint is a creative and flexible tool that adds a lot of drama for little cost.

find the best seat in the house. Although most rooms have a concrete architectural layout and an obvious traffic flow, don’t let this dissuade you from coming up with a fresh seating arrangement. Start with the largest pieces first, such as couches, and work your way from there. This is a great way to make everything “old” feel new again.

switch around your mirrors, artwork and pictures. Oftentimes, once we hang our basic room adornments, these will stay in place until we move – whether that’s two to twenty years in the future. Just by altering the configuration of your portraits, or swapping the spots between prints and mirrors, you’ll be giving a subtle new look to your walls.

create new vignettes within your bookshelves. What makes a space especially well-appointed? Judiciously-thought out bookcases that don’t just store reading material, but display objets d’art of note.

alternate your pillow covers and couch throws. Some design afi-cionados keep different sets of linens for warm weather (March to August) versus the cooler months (September to February). Others even have shams and toss cushions to reflect various calendar holidays. Because these are sea-sonal yet perennially popular embellishments, they can often been found on sale and kept for future use.

Design Within Reach: Freshen Up Your Space Frugally

create a new coffee table arrangement. There’s nothing like a central display to highlight items that aren’t admired as often as they should be. For homes with small children, use a mantle, sideboard or top of a chest instead – this will keep a composition within view yet away from small hands.

address any new storage needs, and source funky contain-

ers in your home to keep the clutter contained. I use a mix of unusual receptacles to keep things in our combined living room/family room together. Wicker baskets with decorative liners holds toys, old cigar boxes keep matches and incense in one place (safely high atop an armoire), and a wooden open-top wine crate hides children’s videos.

trade accessories with your friends! Clothing swaps have become popular once again, so why not have a decorative exchange with like-minded individuals? Establish some ground rules beforehand, such as keeping things of similar size or cost together, and having various levels of bartering done according to price.. This can be more fun than a garage sale, and it’s a great way to catch up with others.

make sure your room serves no more than three functions. Sometimes we’re so busy that we end up spending the majority of our time in certain rooms of our homes, and they end up reflecting this. Having all sorts of stuff in them is distracting, so determine what a space’s three pri-mary uses are, and then relocate additional needs elsewhere.

re-design a space’s purpose completely! It’s very liberating to let go of pre-conceived notions and make an environment truly suit its occupants’ needs. One local family I met has a dining room with a pool table – as opposed to a dining table – in it. The family’s lifestyle is casual, and with growing children, a games room made better sense in the space than an infrequently-needed formal eating area.

So if there’s more dash than cash in your home these days, try out some of these suggestions to make an affordable change that will measure up any budget.

How Can I Benefi t from Tax-Advantaged Investments?

The Tax Man has come and gone for another year and now is an excel-lent time to start planning to reduce or eliminate next year’s tax bite.

For many people, tax-advantaged investing is an excellent way to reduce their taxes. And while many of the traditional tax-advantaged strategies have been eliminated, there are still alternatives left that can help you reduce your taxes. Here are some tax savvy strategies that can payoff for you.

Real Estate PartnershipsTwo of the most common types of real estate partnerships are low-

income housing and historic rehabilitation. The federal government grants tax credits to those who construct or rehabilitate low-income housing or who invest in the rehabilitation or preservation of historic structures.

Participating in a real estate partnership has many advantages. Besides being considered socially responsible investments, these partnerships may provide opportunities for tax-advantaged income and long-term capital appreciation.

The tax credits generated by these partnerships can be used to offset your income tax liability on a dollar-for-dollar basis. This can make them much more valuable than tax deductions, which help reduce your taxable income, not the tax you pay. These credits are subject to certain limitations, and the rehabilitation tax credit begins to phase out for taxpayers with adjusted gross incomes (AGI) greater than $200,000 and is completely phased out when AGI reaches $250,000.

Oil and Gas PartnershipsEnergy partnerships can provide shelter through tax deductions taken at

the partnership level. These include deductions for intangible drilling costs, depreciation, and depletion.

The deductions may be limited; check with a tax advisor to see whether you could benefit from oil and gas partnerships.

SuitabilityThere are risks associated with investing in partnerships. Key among

these is that they are long-term investments with an indefinite holding period with no, or very limited, liquidity. There is typically no current market for the units/shares, and a future market may or may not be available. If a market becomes available, it may result in a deep discount from the original price. At redemption, the investor may receive back less than the original investment. The investment sponsor is responsible for carrying out the business plan, and thus the success or failure of the venture is dependent on the investment sponsor. There are no assurances that the stated investment objectives will be reached. This type of investment is considered speculative. You want to ensure that the investment is not disproportionate in rela-tion to your overall portfolio and that it is consistent with your investment objectives and overall financial situation. In order to invest, you will need to meet specific income and net worth suitability standards, which vary by state. These standards, along with the risks and other information concern-ing the partnership, are set forth in the prospectus, which can be obtained from your financial professional. Please consider the investment objectives, risks, charges, and expenses carefully before investing. Be sure to read the

prospectus carefully before deciding whether to invest. The alternative minimum tax is another concern. Make sure to consult

Pack a Portable Feast!May is the perfect time to pack a picnic basket and enjoy a meal outdoors

with family and friends. Pack a portable feast to celebrate the last day of school, for Mother’s Day, or to enjoy during the Lakeside Symphony Pops concert at the Estrella Ampitheatre.

Several foods are classic picnic fare, such as fried chicken and potato salad. With many of us participating in the Weight Watchers Estrella Community Series, today’s recipes will be of a lighter, healthier nature. Additionally, I prefer picnic foods that can be enjoyed without the need for silverware.

Roasted or grilled chicken strips are low fat, high protein, and flavorful addition to a portable feast. The strips are terrific cold and are easy for kids to eat.

Fruit kebobs are a terrific way to enjoy cut-up fruit without a bowl and a fork. Colorful chunks of strawber-ries, melon, and pineapple – threaded onto a bamboo skewer – are beautiful to look at and fun to eat.

Personal trainer – renee bergRenee can be reached at 623-565-2495

or [email protected].

Estrella resident, Renee Berg, lives in the Fairways with her husband Ryan and her daughter Nicole. Renee has incorporated health and wellness into her life through nutrition and physical fitness for the past 35 years. When she’s not helping others maintain their fitness goals, she enjoys biking and running. For fun, you might catch Renee reading the latest and greatest on exercise concepts, nutrition, or scouring an educational fitness article.

At age 18, Renee began her quest to live healthy, first for herself through her love of running. Soon thereafter, she was helping others attain their fitness goals through the encouragement of her personal instruction. Before relocating to Arizona, Renee worked at Edward Hospital Fitness Center where she assisted patients and members in a hospital fitness center setting. As a personal trainer, she was rewarded with helping those members at vari-ous stages of their recovery. Most recently, Renee has been working with a couple, who together are seeking motivational fitness goals. After beginning with brisk walking, they recently increased their fitness levels, through hard work and determination, to jogging.

At age 30, Renee turned to competitive fitness, joining the Olympic bik-ing team in Chicago. She has competed in various triathlons, duathlons, half

marathons, 5k and 10k races. She continually studies nutritional concepts and updated advanced strength training methods so she can share updated information with clients. Renee enjoys working with people to build their self-confidence. She specializes in working with active adults, persons with physical limitations, beginners, or anyone who needs motivation for exercise, technique implementation or weight loss. She believes that learning the proper form and techniques minimizes time spent and maximizes results.

Because diet is extremely important and goes hand in hand with exer-cise, Renee offers a few nutritional tips. First of all, she explains, “You can’t out-exercise a bad diet. Nutrition and exercise work hand-in-hand in good health and weight loss.” Secondly, Renee recommends eliminating the word “dieting.” She believes that promoting healthy lifestyle changes and nutritional changes through portion control, is essential to meet personal optimum goals. She encourages journaling what you eat and can assist you with finding right where your emotional triggers are hiding. Another suggestion, “Plan ahead. Have prepared healthy snacks for those times of weakness, when you’re most likely to reach for the unhealthy choices in the cupboard,” says the fitness expert.

Renee offers ½ hour, 45 minute, and one hour training sessions, with a ten-session discount option. Clients pre-purchasing ten sessions, pay for just nine, receiving the tenth session for free.

Renee continues her education in fitness and nutrition through semi-nars around the country. Her current certifications include WITS-Personal Fitness Trainer; Bosu-Integrated Balance Training; Heart Zone-Weight Management, Heart Zone-Blue Jersey Cycling Trainer; Heart Zone-sub max testing. Additionally, she is certified in Golf Conditioning, running and is CPR/AED certified.
