Welcome to the Autumn Term at Uppingham Music and to our new Diary of Events

From the mountains of Seville to the studios of Abbey Road, there’s a lot on offer in our Autumn Term events.

This term we welcome two new members of staff to the Music Department; Richard Smith, Head of Strings, and Sebastian Johns, Musician-in-Residence. Do join us if you can for Sebastian’s Lunchtime Concert, where he performs his own arrangement of Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue.

We also have a superb selection of visiting artists this Autumn. Our yearly masterclass series opens with aplomb, with a performance masterclass from Stephen Threlfall, and a violin masterclass from British violinist Tasmin Little OBE. Then, following the sell-out concert by The Sixteen last year, we are joined this Christmas by the award-winning choir Tenebrae, who are sure to delight with their ‘Very English’ programme of festive music.

With much to look forward to, we look forward to welcoming you soon.

Michael Phillips Music Events and Publicity Manager

Lunchtime concerts take place in Uppingham Parish Church at 1.20pm every Wednesday during term time. Free admission to all lunchtime concerts.

Uppingham School Symphony Orchestra Fauré Masques et Bergamasques SuiteBruch Violin Concerto No. 1 in G minor, Op. 26Mendelssohn Symphony No. 4, in A major, Op. 90; ‘Italian’

Anson Poon Violin

Following the success of their brooding orchestral programme in March, Uppingham Symphony Orchestra return to the stage with a selection of vibrant works from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, each

vivid with unique charm and character.

Inspired by the colour and atmosphere of Italy, Mendelssohn’s Fourth Symphony was hailed by critics as a ‘perfect’ work. Depicting Roman dances, religious processions through the streets of Naples, and the incomparable Italian landscapes, art and people, this musical watercolour remains one of Mendelssohn’s best known and most cherished pieces.

Uppingham School Symphony Orchestra presents this joyous work alongside Fauré’s evocative incidental

music, Masques et Bergamasques, and Max Bruch’s most popular composition, the enthralling Violin Concerto, performed by Upper Sixth Music Scholar and recital competition finalist, Anson Poon.
