24+ ADVANCED LEARNING LOANS

Please note: This is only available for Music Business & Level 3 Diploma in Live Sound.

Professional and Career Development Loans are commercial bank loans that can be used to help pay for work-related learning. You can borrow between £300 and £10,000 to help support the cost of up to two years of learning (or three years if it includes one year’s relevant unpaid practical work). The Government will pay the interest on the loan while you’re learning and for one month afterwards. You’ll then need to start repaying it as you would any other commercial loans product. The loan can be used to pay for course fees or other costs, such as travel and living expenses. You can also use the loan to supplement other forms of support, including grants or bursaries.

As the Professional and Career Development Loan is a commercial loans product, you should make sure you have investigated all the funding options that may be open to you to ensure you take an informed decision about whether the loan is right for you.

MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR MONEY

It’s not much fun, but if you take a detailed look at your income and likely expenditure, you should be able to get a realistic picture of your finances and avoid running out of money during the year!

It’s a good idea to start looking at your budget for the year well in advance of starting your first term. First have a look at what income you may have coming in:

Once you have a budget, it’s important that you try to keep to it and monitor what you’re spending your money on. If you overspend one month, you’ll have to cut down on spending the next month!

WE KNOW THAT MONEY CAN BE A WORRY FOR YOU AS A STUDENT. IT ISN’T EASY TRYING TO FIND THE CASH TO PAY FOR COURSE FEES AND LIVING EXPENSES WHILE STUDYING, BUT IT CAN BE MORE MANAGEABLE IF YOU PLAN REALISTICALLY. EVEN IF YOU’RE LIVING AT HOME AND YOUR PARENTS ARE PAYING FOR YOUR COURSE FEES, YOU’LL PROBABLY STILL NEED TO FIND MONEY FOR OTHER LIVING EXPENSES.

Earnings from workBenefits Possible grants, bursaries, etc

Then have a realistic look at what you might be spending your money on:

Laundry

The next step is to work out a monthly budget using the information you’ve gathered. Don’t worry if you’re not good with numbers, ask family or friends for help, or make an appointment with Student Services once term has started.

TIPS FOR MAKING THE MOST OF YOUR MONEY

TRY TO AVOID USING CREDIT CARDS AND STORE CARDS IF POSSIBLE. IT’S EASY TO GET INTO DEBT QUICKLY WITHOUT REALISING IT AND THE REPAYMENTS CAN BE DIFFICULT TO MEET”

Read and keep your bank statements – don’t ignore them!

If you’re renting accommodation, make sure you fill in a form at reception to get a letter stating that you’re a student at BIMM, as full-time students are exempt from paying Council Tax.

Work part-time while you study. This can provide you with useful extra money throughout the year – just make sure you don’t take on so many hours that it interferes with your study.

Take on temporary work during the holidays to earn extra money.

Shop around and get the best deals for services such as gas, electricity and your phone. Most companies will offer discounts if you set up a direct debit to pay your bills. Always check estimated bills against the meter. If you’re sharing a property, make sure everybody pays their share and always let the utility companies know if you’re moving.

Make sure you buy a TV licence if you have a TV – you could end up with hefty fine if you don’t.

Get Contents Insurance and insure any instruments you may have. This is common sense but something many students forget.

Walk or cycle around town to save money on travel.

Investigate funding from charitable and educational trusts and foundations. Some offer small grants to students depending on their circumstances. See our ‘Useful information and advice’ section on page 9 for some useful links.

Rehearsal space in Brighton can range from £7 to £13 per hour. BIMM students can book certain FREE rehearsal slots at Monster Studios or in-house at BIMM. Please ask Reception for more information once you have enrolled.

It’s likely that you’ll already have all the equipment you need for your course in terms of your chosen instrument. However, remember to factor the cost of replacement strings, leads, picks, etc. into your budget. Guitar and bass players are reminded that they’ll need a soft case for their instrument while at BIMM for health and safety reasons.

If you have your own computer, don’t forget to factor in the cost of internet access and any other running costs.
