PRESENTACIÓNEsta monografía reúne la investigación y la interpretación de numerosos autores frente a problemas y escenarios comu-

nes. El objetivo de la obra es romper la compartimentalización entre ciencia y gestión y entre los problemas que, de formaimbricada y sinérgica, implican a una serie de especies con fuerte relación ecológica y dependencia de actividades huma-nas. En un planeta superpoblado, donde aumentan exponencialmente los conflictos entre el mundo natural y las especies quelo habitan y los intereses inmediatos de nuestra propia especie humana, la toma de decisiones adecuadas en conservaciónno puede hacerse sin información de la mejor calidad posible. Pero es obvio que esto no es suficiente; el éxito en gestión yconservación depende de que las soluciones a los problemas, una vez que han sido identificadas, se apliquen. La experien-cia nos enseña que el resultado final no siempre es satisfactorio debido a que alguno de los eslabones de esta compleja cade-na se rompe, bien porque la investigación no posee la altura suficiente o bien porque gestores y Administraciones atienden aotros intereses. Para añadir complejidad al escenario, las alas de los buitres les llevan a cruzar indefectiblemente día a día lasfronteras administrativas. Los problemas se detectan localmente pero las soluciones son a menudo globales y la generaciónde información útil y su circulación libre es el primer paso en el largo camino hacia el éxito en conservación. Es nuestro deseoque de alguna manera esta monografía contribuya, en una etapa de vertiginoso cambio global, a afianzar y mantener esamilenaria relación entre buitres y humanos que se imbrica profundamente en los tejidos agropastorales de las sociedades delsur de Europa.

PRESENTATIONThis work brings together investigations and interpretations by numerous authors of common problems and situations. The

aim of this work is to put an end to the compartmentalisation that separates science from management in the context of theoverlapping and interrelated problems that affect a series of scavenger species that enjoy a close ecological relationship withand dependence on human activities. On an overcrowded planet such as ours, on which the conflicts between the naturalworld and the interests of our own species are increasing exponentially, the taking of correct decisions in the conservation ofthe natural world must be based on the best possible available information. However, it is obvious that this is not sufficient:success in conservation and management depends on implementing the solutions to the problems that are identified. Pastexperience has taught us that the final result is not always satisfactory because some of the links of the complex chain of pro-blem-solving can break, be it because the scientific investigation in the first place was of poor quality or because the admi-nistration concerned has other interests at heart. To make the situation even more complex, vultures fly where they chooseand cross administrative boundaries at will. Problems may be detected locally, but the solutions needed are often global andthe generation of useful information and its free circulation are the first steps towards success in conservation. Our desire isthus that this monograph will contribute in some way during this period of vertiginous world change to strengthen and main-tain the age-old relationship between vultures and humans that forms such an intrinsic part of the fabric of the agro-pastoralsocieties of southern Europe.

AURKEZPENAEgile ugarik arazo eta gertaleku komunen aurrean egin dituzten ikerketak eta interpretazioa biltzen ditu monografia honek.

Zientziaren eta kudeaketaren eta, era inbrikatu eta sinergikoan, giza jardueren mendekotasun eta harreman ekologiko han-dia duten espezie batzuk inplikatzen dituzten arazoen arteko konpartimentalizazioa apurtzea da obraren helburua. Planetagainjendeztatu batean, non esponentzialki areagotuz baitoaz mundu naturalaren eta mundua bizileku duten espezieen etageure giza espeziearen berehalako interesen arteko gatazkak, kontserbazio alorreko erabakiak ezin dira hartu ahalik eta kali-taterik oneneko informazioa eskura izan gabe. Baina garbi dago hori ez dela nahikoa; kudeaketan eta kontserbazioan arra-kasta izatea arazoei emango dizkiegun irtenbideak aplikatzearen mende dago, arazook behin identifikatu ostean.Esperientziak azkeneko emaitza beti ez dela askiesgarria erakusten digu, dela kate konplexu honen begietako bat puskat-zen delako, dela ikerketak behar bezalako mailarik erdiesten ez duelako, dela kudeatzaileek eta Administrazioek beste inte-res batzuei jarraitzen dietelako. Gertalekuari beste zailtasun bat gehitzearren, saien hegalek muga administratiboak zehar-katzera eramaten dituzte egunero huts egin gabe. Arazoak tokian toki hautematen dira baina irtenbideak askotan globalakizaten dira eta informazio erabilgarria sortzea eta horren zirkulazio askea ziurtatzea kontserbazioan arrakasta izatera gara-matzan bide luzean egin beharreko lehen urratsa da. Europa hegoaldeko nekazari- eta artzain-gizarteen bilbeetan sakoninbrikatzen den saien eta gizakien arteko milaka urteko harreman hori sendotzen eta horri eusten laguntzea da monografiahonekin lortu nahi genukeena, aldaketa globaleko aro zorabiagarri honetan.
