My Aunt came to stay for 10 days last month. She lives in a litt le “dorpie” called Theunissen – ever heard of it? Don’t wor-ry, most people haven’t. Their town is so small that we once rode our horses into the corner cafe to buy a cooldrink, and the shopkeeper did not even bat an eyelid, as if it was “normal” to do that. My Aunt comes armed with a multi tude of talents: she cooks a mean batch of beetroot, and she also has a Hitler-like ap-proach to my kids’ rooms, which she at-tacks on an annual basis. She is a ti dy-holic and loves to extract as much garbage from their rooms as possible. The last ti me she was here, we eradicated close to 8 black bags of junk. This ti me, only 4...perhaps the kids are getti ng craft ier at hiding their rubbish away before she strikes? We also take great delight in showing off Durban and the Midlands each ti me she visits. A highlight was the weekend we spent at Saddle and Trout, and although the wind blew gales, the Midlands at this ti me of the year is truly stunning. We’re off to Emdoneni Lodge soon (near Hluhluwe), and cannot wait to interact with their wild cats again. What is YOUR favourite place to get away from it all? Where are you going to these July holidays? Let me know so we can share your ideas with our readers: [email protected]. Alice xxx

KZN MuseumKwaZulu-Natal Museum
Situated in the heart of the city of Pietermaritzburg the KwaZulu-Natal Museum is one of the largest cultural and natural history museums in South Africa. The wide range of outstanding animal collecti ons highlights the rich diversity of wildlife in southern Africa, including a collecti on of mammals, insects, marine molluscs, amphibians, and birds. The Marine Gallery is home to the rare and unusual Coelacanth – a large pre-historic fi sh that was thought to be exti nct unti l it was discovered swimming the seas off the east coast in 1938. The Human Science Gallery deals with the intriguing his-tory of human habitati on in southern Africa. Beginning with a superb San exhibit, it then moves on to the Iron Age people who migrated to southern Africa from central Africa around 2000 years ago, the Great Zimbabwe Ruins and the Late Iron Age civili-sati on that inhabited them, and then to the early Portuguese explorers who were the fi rst Europeans to travel to these shores. The Old Pietermaritzburg Gallery shows a fabulous reconstructi on of a Pietermaritzburg street in the Victorian era. Including an apothecary (pharmacy/chemist), pawnbroker, dressmaker, blacksmith, jeweller, and a wheelwright shop, it is an att racti on not to be missed. Recently the Museum installed an Internet café and learner resource library and boasts an impressive 16 computers and even a fi lm room. So whether you explore a recreati on of a Drakensberg cave or stroll through a night ti me scene in the Victorian gallery or walk on the wooden deck of a wrecked trading vessel in the Towns and Trade Exhibiti on, there is clearly a lot to do and see at this impressive Museum. Start your journey now!

Get Rid of Those Winter Bulges VASER Lipo by Contour Aestheti cs is a revoluti onary, instant fat removal, once-off pro-cedure. Whether you’d like to lose bulges or large areas of fat, VASER Lipo gives you the results you want.Using a technique called LipoSelecti on®, VASER Lipo targets spe-cifi c areas of the body. Ultrasonic waves break up and separate fat cells for removal via gentle sucti on, while leaving vital ti ssues unharmed. This results in less bleeding and bruising than traditi onal liposucti on. VASER Lipo is so precise and gentle that pati ents noti ce instant fat loss with litt le down ti me. VASER Lipo enables the VASER certi fi ed practi ti oner to give you precise, smooth and predictable results, whereas traditi onal liposucti on can result in lumpy or uneven areas. Therefore, unlike traditi onal liposucti on, VASER Lipo by Contour Aestheti cs results in less trauma and fast recovery.

Hellooow HandmadeFor as long as she can remember, Merew-yn de Heer of Hellooow Handmade has designed and created things. “I spent hours on the floor of my mom’s sewing room playing with ribbons and buttons. My mom says that, from as young as two, I would pin fabric together to make clothes for my dolls,’’ says Merewyn.
After matriculating Merewyn studied and then worked in the field of Graphic Design. After years in this area she began to miss using her hands and creating product. Af-ter a pottery course she started creating ceramic crosses on leather and velvet rib-bon. Orders followed and then Merewyn branched out into jewellery and launched her Hellooow Handmade jewellery range at the 2010 Design Indaba.
Beaded chandeliers were added to the range and, not only have these been Merewyn’s biggest sellers, but their cre-ation has enabled Merewyn to employ women infected and affected by HIV and Aids.
All Hellooow Handmade jewellery and chandeliers are handmade and, in turn, unique. Every chandelier takes between 7000 and 15,000 hand-rolled clay beads.
Merewyn is constantly extending her product range, is driven by gorgeous things and strives to make the most ba-sic everyday products aesthetically pleasing. Although the majority of product orders are made via the website, Hellooow Handmade also has a shop at Shop 4, Polo Field Centre, Gowrie Village, Not-tingham Road.

Top Foot Care Tips from Skin Worx• Wear your correct shoe size. It seems an obvious point but squashing your feet into a smaller size will cause immense dis-comfort and a size too big will cause your foot to slide around. • Vary your heel height. Good news: heels are not the enemy. In fact, the latest thinking is that because of their natural foot “architecture” many women are more comfortable in heels. But it is important to give your feet a break each day. If you wear heels to work, then change to flats or go barefoot when you get home. • Wear the right shoes for your sport, especially if it’s an impact sport like running or tennis. Wearing the incor-rect one can have a knock-on effect and cause discomfort, pain and even injury to feet, knees, legs and hips. • Take care of your feet. Ever wonder why you suffer from dry, cracked heels more frequently in summer? The skin’s natural moisture evaporates more easily and if left un-checked can lead to cracked, dehydrated skin. Fortunately, this is easy to fix. Regu-larly use a foot file to smooth down any rough areas. Next, apply a rich, hydrating balm (like the Skin Worx Rich Skin Balm) to these patches every night before going to sleep. Give your feet a massage. Focus on areas like the arches, which carry a lot of your weight, and the balls of the feet.

Kinderland Husband-and-wife team, Shamit and Lyn-dell Bhoola, dreamed of owning their own day care and pre-primary school. Lyndell, who had 10 years of day care teaching experience behind her, was the driving force for the venture that became known as Kinderland. Lyndell’s great passion for children, and for their development and nurturing, spurred the couple into plan-ning and researching their own school. With Lyndell’s teaching skills and Shamit’s business background, the setti ng was per-fect. Kinderland started off at 440 Loop Street where the Bhoolas rented the premises. They started off well in their fi rst year with 70 learners and the commitment and dedicati on of their fantasti c staff brought great success, benefi ti ng the learners and earning great reviews from the parents. The couple since purchased premises, and Kinderland is now located at 420 Burger Street. The school takes children from the age of two months to six years. They cur-rently follow the NCS curriculum and off er soccer training and craft classes, as well as dance and Monkeynasti x on request. The school’s mott o, “Quality Early Learn-ing”, is something they follow on a daily basis, whether it be during pott y train-ing, story ti me or when dance and music are introduced. The development and learning of the three to six year olds is monitored on a daily and weekly basis in preparati on for the next level. Kinderland strongly endorses the self-confi dence, creati vity and individu-ality of their learners. All educators at the school are currently on a pro-gramme to progress to the next level in their educati on.

Playground EquipmentPlayground World produces a range of children’s outdoor playground equip-ment. Started in 2005 as Slough Trading t/a Wood Creations by friends and fa-thers Gary and Shane, the company has expanded and developed over the years and has recently been rebranded as Play-ground World. Visit their new website www.playgroundworld.co.za for more in-formation. Friends since 1983, Gary and Shane began building and installing chil-dren’s playground equipment eight years ago. They focus primarily on wooden jun-gle gyms, swings, slides, trampolines and now every aspect of playground equip-ment. They also install and manufacture all accessories, such as roundabouts, play troughs, sandpits and steel jungle gyms. Safety of the equipment is a priority.
They have done extensive work for The Coega Development Corporation, the Ear-ly Childhood Development Programme and the Grade R Department of Educa-tion. Playground World also supplies pri-vate homes, schools, and crèches, with fully approved structures that meet these criteria.
All Playground World jungle gyms are installed into the ground as permanent structures. The units are fully guaran-teed for a year on all workmanship, and their timber suppliers treat all poles used to the SABS standard. The company’s play units are strong, safe, durable and weatherproofed against the harsh South African weather conditions. All units are fully modularised, which means that you can custom build to the needs of your children, garden/area and budget, and if need be can be easily relocated.
To find out about prices and the exciting new supertubes coming soon, contact Playground World today.
