Editor’s LifeAs I type this, the kids have JUST gone back to school, what a relief! My wallet is groaning under the strain of what felt like months of school holidays. And while there is a lot of “free” entertainment to make use of (the beach, playing at friends, skateboarding at the local parks etc), somehow the “I’m bored” lament is always followed by a request for entertainment that costs a whole heap of money. Take going to the movies for example, besides the cost of the movie ticket (which can vary between R0 if you have a Discovery Vitality Kids’ Club Card and it is before 7pm, right up to over R100 for the fanciest cinema seats in the house), the cost of a “combo” snack (popcorn, a drink and sweets) is anything from R50 upwards. Movies have sadly become a rare luxury for most families. So what can you do for “free” nowadays? Living close to the sea, we have been taking advantage of the great weather by going to the beach most weekends, but if you have to travel far to get there, it’s not really “free”, is it? How about a picnic in your local park? And do you exercise with your kids? As a family we do the 5km Park Run every Saturday morning at 8am (it’s a worldwide event, so check out www.parkrun.co.za to find your closest venue), and while the kids certainly don’t do back flips about having to get out of bed at 7am on a Saturday, once they are up and moving, they do seem to have fun. I’d really love to hear your ideas of how you have “free” fun with your kids. Send your ideas to [email protected]. You may win some free movie tickets in the process!

What is debt counselling? How can a debt counsellor assist you? The purpose of debt review/debt counselling is to reschedule your existing debt by negotiating with your credit providers for reduced interest rates, reduced instalments and an extension of the payment period. If you cannot make a contribution towards your debt, you are not eligible for debt review. Debt counsellors assist consumers who are over indebted. In other words, if your monthly contribution towards your creditors exceeds your disposable income (monies left after your necessary living expenses were paid). Debt counsellors, however, are not magicians and the debt won’t disappear. Your debt counsellor is your partner in rehabilitating your financial status. Do your homework before approaching a debt counsellor:• Confirm with the National Credit Regulator

Debt Counselling(NCR) if the counsellor is registered (Call Centre: 0860 627 627). • If the debt counsellor asks for upfront payment, consider going somewhere else. • Confirm that they make use of an accredited Payment Distribution Agency (PDA). • When applying, the debt counsellor is bound by law to explain the fees and costs that will be charged. The maximum fee is R6 000 per joint application. • The debt counsellor must have a registered and accessible address that you can visit should you feel the need to. • Check that the information sent to court is the correct information that you supplied. Be vigilant and try not to be a passive participant in your own rehabilitation. Instead, be pro-active. Check payments regularly and ask for statements. Have a great debt free year!

AlcoFreeFeb Time Again!

Stand up and donate, plus benefit from the detox! South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD), a registered non-profit organisation, is once again launching its annual AlcoFreeFeb™ Charity Fundraising Challenge. For the month of February, the organisation encourages the public to give up alcohol in support of victims of road crashes and their families and to add a voice to the call to actively reduce the carnage on our roads.

Additionally, AlcoFreeFeb™ comes at the perfect time for an alcohol detox after the festivities of December and January! AlcoFreeTeen™ is also available for teens to get involved and learn the importance of zero or sensible alcohol consumption. Alcohol is behind many of the annual 18 000 deaths and 150 000 injuries on our roads. The cost of this to the state is billions financially and an untold personal cost to families.

According to statistics from the World Health Organisation, an estimated 31.9 per 100 000 are killed on South African roads. These statistics place South Africa 177 out of 182 countries surveyed in the world and the second worst in Africa, after Nigeria, or equal to one jumbo jet crashing and killing 1 200 people each month. South Africans have the power to change their lives, we have in the past and we can do it again. Join us in making our roads and lives safer for all.

Visit www.alcofreefeb.co.za for more info and to sign up. It costs R100 for the month

Epilepsy can be defined as a tendency to spontaneous, abnormal electrical activity in the brain manifesting as seizures/fits. It is a disease of many causes, but a common abnormality in that there are abnormal ‘discharges’ or ‘firing mechanisms’ in the brain. Though shrouded in mystery since the beginning of time and often called ‘falling sickness’, it is relatively common, affecting 0.5% to 1% of the population. Epilepsy has had thousands of different names through history and has been managed in weird and wonderful ways. In very ancient times it was referred to as Holy Sickness and Sacred Disease and linked to evil spirits. Once also called ‘lunatism’ and named as a disorder related to the phases of the moon. Modern medicine has been able to show, with the help of EEGs (Electro Encephalograms) and brain imaging, that there is truly a ‘natural’ cause that affects the brain’s neurons and the functioning of the ‘electrical circuit’ of

Epilepsy – A Disease Shrouded In Mysterythe brain. More exciting than actually being able to properly diagnose the specific type of Epilepsy, is the ability to treat and manage this disease well, to the point of controlling the Epilepsy and limiting the amount of fits suffered. The aim is to limit fits to minimal/zero. Medication and surgeries developed have made this possible. Epilepsy is a common condition that is highly treatable today. As a society, we should not stigmatise the sufferers, but rather be aware and able to encourage and support family and friends who suffer from it.

Healthy Life/Beautiful LifeUnhealthy Stress

South African stress levels are particularly high, and many lifestyle diseases, health-risk behaviours, suicide behaviours, violence, trauma-producing behaviours, performance levels and difficulties in coping, HIV/AIDS, retrenchments, financial pressure and cancer are all stress related. Studies have shown that up to 50% or more of work absenteeism in some companies is stress related. Professor Lourens Schlebusch (UKZN) has designed and validated a Stress Symptom Checklist. He suggests that one should look at three levels of stress. The three systems involve an analysis of your physical reactions, psychological reactions and behavioural reactions which are also related to your social interactions, because that is where you often express your behaviour. We are often aware of our physical and psychological behaviour, but not our behavioural reactions. Physical Reactions. This would include symptoms like difficulties in relaxing, high blood pressure, unexplained headaches, muscle tension and unexplained nausea.Psychological Reactions. This would include symptoms like feelings of helplessness, being over self-critical, feeling you cannot cope and feeling you have been neglected or let down.Behavioural Reactions. This would include symptoms like poor time management, the need to constantly take work home, a drop in personal standards, difficulty in completing one task before rushing on to the next one, inability to meet deadlines and feeling that you function better under pressure. If you have a stress-related psychological disorder that you cannot cope with, you should seek help from a registered psychologist.

Healthy Life/Beautiful LifeWhy Should A Baby See A Chiropractor?

We all ask “why would a newborn baby need to see a chiropractor, when chiropractors deal with pain?” Well, hopefully I can answer this question with a small explanation of what chiropractors actually do: Chiropractors correct fixations in the spine, this is an area of the spine that is malfunctioning due to several factors, such as poor stationary posture, trauma or wear and tear. This malfunction can lead to nerve irritation and muscle spasm in the area. Correction of malfunction allows the mobility of the spine to return to normal, and a reduction of muscle spasm and nerve irritation. When a baby is born naturally, with no assistance, the baby’s movement through the birth canal mobilises the spine and removes any fixations that may have developed in utero, especially in the third trimester when there is less space for movement. When a baby is born via c-section or natural birth with assistance such as forceps, this mobilisation of the spine does not occur and there is a greater chance of fixations being present in the baby’s spine. These fixations can manifest themselves in trouble with latching, fussiness of feeding on one side, tummy cramping, colic and favouring one posture (ie. holding the head to one side or one leg up). A chiropractor will assess your baby for any fixations, and remove them with a gentle manual technique. Babies generally respond well to chiropractic treatment, and will show an improvement on the same day. Most chiropractors give you exercises to do at home with your baby.

Claire Hartshorne Psychologist

If one analyses the average weight and body mass index of children compared to 100 or 50 years ago, one finds that there is a staggering increase in obesity and childhood Diabetes. Obesity puts strain on a child’s heart, bones and other organs and also subjects a child to emotional trauma as well as setting a child up for a lifetime of ill health. In my opinion children eat way too many simple carbohydrates and especially refined sugar. Also, unfortunately most children do not run around as much as they should and are too stagnant. Childhood Diabetes can subject a child to a life-time of ill health and a shortened life-span. It is imperative that children learn healthy eating habits, including lots of fresh vegetables. Healthy balanced diets include:

Growing Children Healthilysmall portions of complex carbohydrates, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as protein in the form of chicken, fish or lean meat. Full cream yoghurt and milk should be given to children. They should be encouraged to drink water or very watered down juice. Fruit juice is very high in sugar and should be avoided, as should soda drinks. Running around and playing outside is imperative to a good energy balance. Energy needs to be expended for many reasons, one being the healthy uptake of glucose into the cells, but also blood flow to the brain for development. If your child is overweight, even slightly, consult a dietician or GP and possibly even a multidiscipline team in order to stem the problem immediately and move to a healthy happy weight.
