Editor’s LifeWelcome back! It feels like absolute ages since I was on leave, and yet it was actually only a few short weeks ago. We managed to get away for a few days and visited the metropolis of Kokstad (that’s not a typo, yes we actually did go to ‘The Stad’). I hear you snickering and wondering why on earth anyone would want to do that...but it was actually a blast! It’s a really small farming community so everyone knows everyone, and we were even treated to live music in our hosts’ garden (just like at Bot Gardens)! We visited their aunt and uncle on a dairy farm, and my kids had the best time – good, clean fun in fresh air. No TV time (and certainly no movie houses in Kokstad). We then spent a few days at Ingeli Forest Lodge just outside of Kokstad. We walked in the forest, we played adventure golf on the most well designed course I’ve seen, visited Oribi Gorge (no we were not brave enough to jump) and spent a day at the water park at Wild Coast Sun. And just when we thought we were done gallivanting, after a few days at home we decided on impulse to trade in our caravan for a camping trailer – after seven years of relatively “luxurious camping” (how’s that for an oxymoron). But try to find a campsite with availability on New Year’s Eve? We did finally find a spot, at Hibberdene, which was fun (but you won’t need to add it to your bucket list). And then we headed home, and straight back to the reality of work and school and life. Fun times!

MONKEYPROOF!
Prilene Kistnasami is an inspiration to everyone trying to get fit and healthy in 2016 – she lost over 32kgs in 16 months, on her own, through hard work and dedication.
Prilene’s daughter,
Jasmika (12), is a real water baby and loves reading, playing tennis and music. Prilene and Jasmika enjoy baking and cooking together every week. Prilene loves being a mom and says she can never get tired of the snuggles, hugs and kisses! “Since I only have one child, she has become my best friend, my confidant and my biggest admirer – I love being the beautiful queen in my daughter’s eyes,” said Prilene. Prilene, once a slim size 34, started putting
Inspirational Weight Losson weight after the birth of her daughter. Year after year she kept putting on weight, living an unhealthy lifestyle. She hated shopping for clothes and avoided family functions. She was always feeling exhausted, lethargic and out of breath. “One day I woke up with the realisation that this is it, there’s only one shot at this life and I can either enjoy the ride and live life to its fullest or I can stay the way I am and hide from all mirrors. I said to myself – enough is enough! I need to make this change, a change for the better. I want to live longer and I’m doing this for me!” said Prilene. She got rid of all the junk foods, signed up at a gym and juggled her daily time schedule around to make time for exercise. When she started seeing results, she worked even harder. Prilene went from weighing over 90ks to 58kgs and now wears a size 32. She hopes to inspire others who are trying to lose weight.

Valentine’s DayPurple Heaven
Tucked away on the Midlands Meander is the haven of peace and tranquility known as Indigo Fields. With recent upgrades now complete, there is no better time than the present to book that romantic getaway. A quick escape before the madness of the festive season descended was required, and so I found myself at Indigo Fields with a special friend. I had made the mistake once before of thinking we could enjoy a treatment or two and then come home, but that’s a serious error in judgement, as the pampering continues well into the evening, so a full day spa with an overnight stay is a MUST! What makes Indigo Fields so special is the warmth of the staff – they ooze hospitality. Besides the relaxing spa treatments you receive, you also receive three delicious meals, as well as breakfast the next day. The spoiling is incredible! Each couple is made to feel like there is nobody else there – all spa areas are secluded and each one is unique (the thatch bomas are always my favourite as you are taken there via Land Rover and you can hear the birds and stream trickling past while you indulge in a full body massage, Indian head massage or facial). The suites are all tastefully decorated, and you want for absolutely nothing! The cottage that sleeps eight is a perfect getaway for four couples or your book club girls. I have never been disappointed by Indigo Fields and highly recommend you take the time out to relax and enjoy time alone with a special someone in your life.

Valentine’s DayYour Ideal Valentine’s Day
Mum’s Mail asked readers to give us their dream Valentine’s Day ideas. So here are some top ideas – maybe they will give you inspiration for your Valentine! “A lovely breakfast on the Midlands Meander, then off to the spa to get pampered and enjoy the day with the man you love. Relax with some snacks and drinks.” Yashika Sukhaye. “Coffee in bed and a coastal pillion ride on a Harley to Rain Farm Game Lodge for a morning game drive. Then a helicopter ride to a romantic spot in the Midlands, where a beautiful picnic awaits. A couple’s massage and then check in to the Oyster Box Hotel for sundowner cocktails and an evening of dinner and dancing the night away. In the morning – a leisurely walk along the beach and breakfast, and then back to reality. A girl can dream!” Claudette Louise Sapet-Nel.
“Early morning ride on the Harley along the coastline and find a quaint restaurant along the way for a special brunch, then a slow ride back home, followed by a relaxing afternoon nap and a sunset cruise on a yacht. Then dinner and music on La Vue yacht.” Joanne Stewart Coetzee. “A candlelit dinner for two in my own lit up beautiful garden with roses, beautiful soft music and a delicious meal prepared by my man.” Lee-Ann Marilyn Naidoo. “An evening of fine dining at The Oyster Box and a relaxed time together. No kids, no family, just us – peace!” Belinda Liebenberg. “A hot air balloon ride with my husband.” Adrie Prinsloo Lamprecht. “A trip to Mauritius – chocolates, beach and sun!” Daphne Pillay.

Valentine’s Day
I was recently treated to a few days at Gooderson Natal Spa Hot Springs and Leisure Resort. What a fun and relaxing time away from the city – definitely a must for anyone wanting to get away and have some fun and some “R & R” time. Just nine kilometres from the historic town of Paulpietersburg, it’s a great spot for families with loads of activities for kids and adults! If you prefer to relax, you can languish in the natural hot springs or visit the beauty spa. On the adventure side, there is horse riding, quad biking, mountain biking, super tubes, tennis, birding trails, fishing and more. A 22km mountain bike and running trail as well as a BMX track were recently added. The new Battlefields Paintball Arena and Obstacle Course provides an exciting challenge and great team building exercise. There’s also a water park complete with a 45 metre super tube going into the pool near Boulders Bar, two 20 metre high speed slides and even a sprinkler/splash park for
Gooderson Natal Spa Hot Springs and Leisure Resortlittlies. However, the main attraction is the warm pools which are fed by a natural hot spring. The thermal waters rise up along fault fissures and are heated at source to between 36 and 45 degrees Celsius. They contain healing chlorides, sulphates and carbonates that are believed to help treat a number of ailments. The Gooderson Natal Spa Hot Springs and Leisure Resort is known for its cuisine – farm-style breakfasts, light meals and delicious a la carte and buffet dinners.

Valentine’s DayNatural Body Wash
I have sensitive skin, so when I first came across the BON range of products, I was delighted. I first fell in love with the Liquid Gold Tissue Oil, and then the Rose Hip Serum and I have now discovered their Natural Body Wash, which is exactly that, natural! It contains no funny fragrances that generally make my skin itch and misbehave. It revitalises and hydrates naturally and at only R79.90 for a 200ml pump bottle, it is affordable and it lasts – you only need a tiny bit and it goes a long way. I have always found that traditional shower gels and soaps clean well, but leave my skin feeling dry and tight. But the BON Body Wash leaves my skin hydrated and nourished, yet it still feels squeaky clean. The gentle formulation is free of surfactants, harsh chemicals and colourants, which is why it’s ideal for my sensitive skin and is suitable for the whole family (it is even gentle enough for babies, although they also do a range just for little ones). The BON Body Wash is a 100% natural, foaming liquid wash, made from certified organic natural oils and I love it! Ditch your regular shower gel that oozes harmful ingredients and convert to the BON Body Wash – you’ll wonder what took you so long.
Online ordering is simple and they always have great specials on
offer too. Visit www.bonnaturaloils.co.za for more info.

South Africans Against Drunk Driving (SADD) is launching its annual nationwide AlcoFreeFeb campaign which runs for the
month February and asks the public to pledge to give up alcohol for the month, or at least for a few days, to raise awareness of road crashes, promote responsible drinking and show support for road crash victims.
For those who feel this is too big of an ask, don’t despair – they still want you! They offer ‘cheat day passes’ for those special occasions, as well as a ‘still drinking but donating’ option to make a donation in support of the campaign. AlcoFreeFeb™ started in 2010 and they want to go bigger this year! Join SADD in the fight to reduce the high road accident rate. Let all South Africans come together and make a difference on our roads and say, ‘enough is enough!’
Support SADD’s AlcoFreeFeb CampaignIt costs R100 to sign up for the AlcoFreeFeb campaign (with the option to buy ‘cheat day’ passes for special occasions for R20). Alternatively, a donation would be appreciated for those who wish to carry on drinking or do not drink alcohol.
All proceeds from the campaign will enable SADD to do alcohol and road safety education; no drinking then driving/walking and support the victims of drink driving crashes.
To sign up, visit www.alcofreefeb.co.za and choose an option: full month, still drinking, never drink, teenager or drinking day pass. Send them a photo, pay the initial fee, and then pay the balance for the “Drinking Day Passes” at the end of February.

A Canopy Tour takes you on an unforgettable adventure as you slide from
one platform to the next along a series of steel cables set amongst magnificent natural surroundings. It is widely regarded as one of the best eco-adventure activities in the world and is something for people of all ages, with the youngest being three and the oldest 90 so far to do the tour! The concept of Canopy Tour originated in the rain forests of Costa Rica, where scientists were studying animals and birds in the canopy layer of the forest. Safely sliding from tree to tree via a series of platforms became a novel way to see the flora and fauna of an indigenous forest. A whole new level of appreciation was born when the concept became one of South Africa’s most popular eco-adventure activities.
Karkloof Canopy ToursThis is a must-do activity, especially for nature lovers or adventure seekers looking to do something truly unique! Professional guides assure the safety of each group and point out interesting facts along the way. It’s ideal for teambuilding, kids’ parties, family get-togethers, corporate events or just a fun day out. Open every day, with tours every half an hour from 8am to 3pm. Experience one of South Africa’s fastest growing eco-adventures with thousands of satisfied thrill-seekers having already caught the bug!

I’ve always been told that I’m really spoilt, as I have a husband who cooks dinners most of the time. He even grocery shops and fetches and carries kids. But then, there are the times when he does not feel like cooking, or he runs out of ideas… and that’s why I’m so pleased to have found My Chef! They deliver ready-to-cook meals to your door twice a week, ensuring that you don’t ever need to step foot in a grocery store. I love that most of the My Chef meals are freezable, and they are well marked, so you can easily see which meals to freeze and which ones are not suitable for freezing. All meals are made fresh the day before delivery and the menu changes every week so you cannot get bored, and they deliver twice a week. What sets My Chef apart from other readymade meal companies, is that a lot of their dishes are not ready to “heat and eat”, but are rather “ready to prepare” meals.
My Personal ChefBy following the simple instructions on the meal “kits” they deliver, cleverly packaged with all you need for that meal, you end up looking like a professional chef without any stress or fuss (i.e. “Cooking for Dummies 101”). So you’re still not convinced? Worried that it will be too expensive? Visit www.mychef.co.za and have a browse, I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised. I’m off to have dinner now, cooked by my daughter! Voila!

Goji Berry Energy Bars It’s been a great holiday! No lunch boxes to pack and no searching for new ideas – so here is a recipe to try and start the New Year lunch boxes off with a bit of a zoom! It’s actually a great recipe as you can substitute your favourite nuts, seeds and dried fruit. The commercial energy bars are usually loaded with sugar and for those new to the goji berry, it is loaded with antioxidants, essential fatty acids and amino acids. It’s a high energy berry with all the goodness – what more could you ask for? Ingredients:• 1 cup walnuts• 1 cup almonds• 1 cup pumpkin seeds (or preferred choice of seed – sunflower/sesame)• 6/8 dates• Pinch salt• 1 teaspoon vanilla essence• 2 tablespoons coconut flour• ½ cup agave (can use honey)• 1 cup goji berries Method:• Preheat oven to 170°C.• Grind all the nuts and seeds in a food processor and add the dates and pulse a few times – leaving some texture.• Put this mixture into a mixing bowl and add all the other ingredients.• Mix well and spread mixture over a rectangular Pyrex baking dish (remember to spray first).• Bake for about 20 minutes and then cut into squares when a little cool and keep in an airtight Tupperware. Pheka – fresh, simple cooking!

Get organised: Gather all important financially-related documents in a central location that is equally accessible to both partners.
Track your spending and pay yourself first: Write down where you are spending your money. Re-route some of your spending to a savings account: pay yourself first for a secure financial future.
Debit cards are handy tools to help work with your budget. At the end of the month, you’ll have a record of all the spending you’ve done with your debit card.
Credit cards can be very dangerous if you don’t have a budget. If you don’t know how much you can afford, how will you know if you overspend? Or, if you’re making a large purchase and paying it off over time, how will you know how long it will take to pay off, and how much interest you will pay?
Tips To Help Keep Your Cash in Your PocketPlan to save: Start a savings account to cover expenses like clothes, Christmas/holidays, and insurance. Plan for future expenses throughout the year. Complete a retirement planning worksheet.
Build an emergency fund: You never know when you will need additional cash, so try to have two to three months of living expenses in a readily accessible savings account or Money Market account.
Don’t go into debt, and if you are, get out of debt! If you must use a credit card, control your credit card spending and try to pay off any debts you have. Pay more than the minimum monthly payment. Once you have paid off your debts/credit cards, take the money and put it towards savings or some other debt.

Summer is a great time to get into shape and one of the easiest, least strenuous ways is to swim. The team at Hi Temp Solar Solutions has found that a swimming pool is used more often when it is heated. Even if it’s heated just a few degrees, that takes the edge off the cold water. The cold water “shock effect” is removed, making your swimming experience more pleasant. Some advantages of a heated swimming pool are:• The kids will never leave the pool again!• It’s healthy to swim.• You will be able to entertain in the pool instead of around the pool.• You will be making the most of your investment.
Hi Temp offers two swimming pool heating methods:Solar pool heating: ideal for extending your

Have you been staring at the same room for months, wishing you could make a change that won’t cost the earth? Here are some tips to help you do just that. It’ll take some elbow grease and gumption, but will be totally worth it!
Colour! The use of colour in a space is one of the most effective and accessible tools for a quick and gorgeous revamp. The simplest way to do this is to paint the walls in your favourite colour! Or choose two colours and paint both colours in the room, two thirds from the bottom in one colour and the rest in the other colour.
Declutter! The most overwhelming and disturbing aspect in any space is clutter. Remove everything from the room (all the furniture and décor) then slowly put it back, starting with the essentials. This way you
Love Your Home with These Five Design Tipswill quickly see at what stage your space feels comfortable and welcoming – STOP there!Add life! Bring some outdoor energy inside – buy some plants and gorgeous pots and place them everywhere you can (but don’t cause clutter!).
Even imagery of nature can have the same effect.
Light it up! The right lighting can make all the difference in a room. Standing lamps are all the rage at the moment and there’s a great selection.
Use your own art to create gallery walls in a room, rearrange it onto one wall, creating a feature out of all of it. And if you don’t have art, make it – Pinterest is an amazing tool to help anyone make something beautiful.

Lazer Art Can Bring Your Unique Idea to Life
Lazer Art, based in Umhlanga, was started out of a love for creating beautiful, unique gifts for people. They have 18 years of experience in the eventing industry and with this event experience they saw a gap in the market for unique gifts that they make up as per clients’ requests. They are able to assist with promotional items like caps, t-shirts and gifts etc. One of their best-selling products are unique, personalised wooden boards which are made from Kiaat – a hard wood. These personalised gifts are perfect for wedding gifts, Mother’s Day gifts, teachers’ gifts and anniversary and thank you gifts. They can design and then laser any personal message and image onto a chosen board. Once a personalised board is requested for engraving, the client will receive a computer generated sample design to approve before the board is lasered. They can produce large quantities for corporate clients or special wedding favours. To look after these wonderful boards, just add olive oil after cleaning the board, this will ensure the boards last and look great for years. They can make any items cut out of wood, metal and Perspex, such as unique trophies, school medals, corporate table centre pieces and colour printing onto wood, Perspex and metal. Give them your unique idea and they will bring it to life.

Snoring and Sleep Apnea in Women
Snoring and sleep apnea are common in women, yet few are as open and candid about their problem as men.
According to the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), nearly everyone snores occasionally and about 24% of adult women are habitual snorers. AASM says sleep apnea affects about 4% of men and 2% of women. Loud and frequent snoring may be symptomatic of a common sleep disorder known as obstructive sleep apnea. It occurs when the muscles relax during sleep and soft tissue in the back of the throat collapses and blocks the upper airway and the snorer stops breathing several times each hour. This puts an enormous strain on one’s heart. Recent research shows links between sleep apnea and a host of other disorders and diseases like congestive heart failure, high blood pressure, stroke and diabetes.
Mandibular devices prove extremely effective in many snoring cases. A product like SnoreMeds, which has the approval of doctors and dentists, has proved highly effective with 85% of snorers who use it. Made from hypoallergenic thermoplastic, BPA free, SnoreMeds is an oral device worn at night. It works as a splint by positioning and holding the lower jaw slightly forward during sleep. As a result, the respiratory tract is widened, which enables air to flow unobstructed through the breathing passage, allowing the patient to breathe more freely and stop snoring. SnoreMeds has developed a second mandibular device in its range aimed to help women, who naturally have a smaller jaw size.

Breaking That Fever Through The NightThere is nothing worse than being stuck at 2am with a boiling hot child. Use these three easy steps to break fever effectively at home:• Step 1: Paracetamol should be worked out according to weight: 20mg/kg every six hours. A 6kg child will need 5ml or an Empaped 125mg suppository. A 12 kg child will need 10ml or an Empaped 250mg suppository. If there is no response within 15 min go to step 2. • Step 2: Add Ibuprofen/Nurofen: 5mg/kg every six hours. A 10kg child will need 2.5ml or a Ponstan suppository. A 20kg child will need 5ml or a Voltaren 25mg Suppository. Children between two and five years will need a Panamor 12.5mg suppository. If your child has a temperature over 39⁰C, do step 1 and 2 simultaneously – it is fine to use an Empaped and Voltaren suppository back to back! • Step 3: Splash lukewarm (not cold) bathwater onto your child’s body and blow onto his/her skin.

OptOmetriStS
Visual Difficulty in Children Optometrists are often asked what symptoms might indicate visual difficulties in children. While they do recommend annual assessments to have a more thorough look, symptoms of visual difficulty may include some of the following: • Rubbing of the eyes.• Excessive blinking.• Squinting of the eyelids (in order to see more clearly).• Squinting of the eyes (i.e. one or both eyes turning inwards or outwards, which warrants an urgent referral).• Whiteness or discolouration of one or both pupils (this would warrant a particularly urgent referral to an ophthalmologist).• Close working distances (such as sitting close to the television or leaning in close to their school work).• Closing of one eye.• Turning or tilting their head when working.• Avoiding near work and reading.• Watering, discharge or itching of the eyes.• Losing their place while reading.• Headaches or tiring of the eyes. Any child with learning difficulties should also have contributing visual difficulties ruled out. Family history of visual difficulties would also be an indication for a child to have an earlier thorough assessment. Surprising to parents is that (not having a reference point) children do not always complain of blur or realise that their vision could be clearer. If their vision has always been blurred or of variable clarity, they often would think that this was normal. If you have any queries on this or suspect any visual difficulty, do get in touch with an optometrist with a special interest in children’s vision so that well-timed management can be recommended.

Some are born with perfectly balanced skin but the majority of us have to work a bit harder to keep our skin healthy, beautiful and youthful.
These are some secrets for a healthy skin:1. A good cleanser and cleansing routine to remove dirt, sweat, sebum and make-up, in the mornings and evenings. A ‘double’ cleanse in the evening is recommended to ensure that the skin is squeaky clean.2. Hydrate the skin. In addition to six to eight glasses of water daily, you need a good moisturiser containing hyaluronic acid and peptides that focus on drawing and holding moisture in the skin.3. Physical and chemical skin exfoliation – not only is a physical exfoliation (granular consistency) beneficial to the skin to stimulate an increase in blood flow and nutrients, but it also polishes the skin. A chemical exfoliant contains alpha-hydroxy (AHA) or beta-hydroxy (BHA) acids that gently removes dead skin cells and rejuvenates the deeper layers, giving the skin that healthy glow.4. Sunscreen is the number one essential tip! Everybody needs sunscreen to protect their biggest organ. It not only helps to protect against skin cancers, but it also prevents ageing.
With these tips, together with a balanced diet full of antioxidants, exercise and healthy lifestyle choices (such as not smoking), you will be well on your way to flawlessly beautiful and healthy skin this year.

Tips for Avoiding Age-Related Weight Gain
Getting older doesn’t mean you have to get heavier. Take control now to avoid age-related weight gain.
Since muscle tissue burns calories at a much more rapid pace than fat does, maintaining muscle mass is clearly one of the most important things you can do. You are capable of building muscle throughout your lifetime, so engage in activities that challenge your muscles so that you build and maintain them. In order to support muscle repair and growth, be sure to include plenty of protein in your diet. Plant sources of protein – peas and beans (especially soy, which is a complete protein) offer healthy and affordable options to meet your daily needs. If you’re not in the habit of including plenty of vegetables and fruits in your diet, now is the time to start working on it. Vegetables and whole fruits are nutrient-dense, which means that they pack a lot of nutrition for relatively few calories. Since every calorie really counts, pay close attention to the extras in your diet. Calories from fats, sweets and alcohol add up quickly, so choose wisely and use them sparingly.
Try to be in charge of your diet as much as you can. If cooking is a chore, seek out quick, healthy recipes and always cook extra so you can put food away for another meal. Eating out is fun and convenient, but educate yourself as to the best choices so you don’t overdo it.

Beautiful LifeLaughter:
The Best Medicine in 2016 We can become too serious, but having fun is more infectious than a virus. In fact, it is viral. And it’s free! Many studies show why laughter deserves to be known as “the best medicine” (Proverbs 17:22).• It releases an instant flood of feel-good chemicals that boost the immune system, by increasing levels of immunity and disease fighting cells.• Almost instantly, it reduces levels of stress hormones. A really good belly laugh can make cortisol drop by 39%, adrenalin by 70% and the “feel-good hormone,” endorphin, increase by 29%.• Humour gets both sides of your brain working together, which is one of the keys to releasing potential. Some studies even suggest that laughter helps to increase the flexibility of thought.• Laughing 100 to 200 times a day is equal to 10 minutes of rowing or jogging! Wow! Can you afford not to laugh? I wish you all many hours of laughter and blessings in 2016. If you need to order gifts or book pamper workshops, please call me. Your hands, your feet, your face, your body… my passion!

Kids’ LifeThe Internet: Do You
Know Where Your Child Has Been Today?
The Internet can be a fun, educational and positive place for children to learn and socialise, but unfortunately many dangers are just one click away.
According to www.safecic.co.uk, 70% of children are unwittingly exposed to pornography while doing homework research. Before the age of 18 years, 83% of boys and 57% of girls have viewed group sex on the Internet. Pornography is not the only danger. Children are being exposed to hateful and violent images, illegal behaviour and drugs. Schools are promoting e-learning and parents simply don’t have the time to hover over their children while they are doing their homework. So how can parents minimise the risk of their children being exposed to inappropriate Internet content? NTD Home Edition is a simple yet comprehensive and affordable plug and play device which plugs into your router. Your own devices remain undisrupted, but your children’s devices are restricted from any adult content. NTD Home Edition can block 450 million websites in 145 categories, ensuring that your children never stumble upon inappropriate content. Image tiles are blocked and NTD Home Edition filters within YouTube, as well as blocking pop-up ads. NTD Home Edition uses Bitdefender as an anti-virus, ensuring the security of your children’s devices.

Kids’ LifeMaking Sense
of the Writing Process When young children are allowed to use all their senses for learning new skills, exciting progress is evident. Many skills are needed for the simple act of writing letters to create a legible piece of handwriting. Hand-eye co-ordination, the ability to cross the midline and fine motor skills are just a few. Using the five senses is a creative way of assisting the formal writing process. We can see the letters and hear their sounds – these two senses are easily made a part of every writing experience. What about the other senses – touch, taste and smell? There are lots of great ways to create the touch element in learning the shape of letters – writing in the sand, making sandpaper letters or creating letters out of pipe cleaners all works well. Wart and Fish has put together a simple tactile file of letters to use for touch and feel from A to Z. Clearly marked arrows indicate the direction required to form the letter correctly. Now you have covered three out of the four senses – what about smell and taste? Try stretching your imagination! Use your favourite cookie recipe to make letter biscuits. This is a great way to add in the last two senses – smell and taste! You don’t need to cut out the whole alphabet – try your child’s name or the vowels, then ‘bake and take’ the honours of integrating your child’s senses into ‘making sense’ of the writing process.

Educated LifeSmartMind Technologies
In 1997 NASA Scientists at NASA Langley Research Centre started research in development of technology to train astronauts to maintain physiological equilibrium under emergency circum-stances. They developed EEG brain activity measures to evaluate sustained attention, engagement, awareness and pilot stress and the results were remarkable. All astronaut pilots are highly skilled and experienced pilots, the best you can find, but when putting their pilots through NASA’s high stress simulations they found that military pilots – who had day-to-day high stress training experience as part of their military background – scored much higher in decision making and reaction time, compared to pilots with a commercial background. The EEG brain activity measures revealed the difference between military pilots and commercial pilots and enabled NASA researchers to develop Neurofeedback training, improving the reaction time and decision making of commercial pilots more efficiently and faster than their situation training. In 2007 this technology was made available to the public through a NASA spin-off company, SmartBrain Technologies. SmartMind Technologies is the franchised business of SmartBrain, with an exclusive licence from SmartBrain Technologies USA and brings the most advanced and effective patented EEG Neurofeedback Technology in the world to South Africa. SmartMind customises profiles to address specific needs including, but not isolated to, concentration and impulse control (ADD and ADHD), expressive and receptive language, fine and gross motor skills, fine motor co-ordination skills, planning and organisational skills, visual processing field, auditory processing, mental clarity, motivation, low energy and mood, quiet internal chatter, decrease worry and physical calming.

Bridging the Linguistic and Cultural Divide
The Siyakhuluma Project is a Durban based non-profit organisation that teaches isiZulu and English at community and corporate level. The project is guided by three core principles; affordability, accessibility and practicality. Their goal is to create a network of qualified isiZulu and English teachers who teach courses that are affordable to all economic brackets, that are located in accessible venues and that encourage practical and relevant language use. The Siyakhuluma Project believes that South Africa is linguistically and culturally divided. The negative effects of promoting only English and Afrikaans during apartheid has left a severe mark of separation on our social landscape. Post-apartheid South Africa has struggled to integrate because people do not speak the same languages. By learning to understand each other we will communicate better, integrate faster and create a more capable and competitive economy. The Siyakhuluma Project believes adult language education should be available to all who desire it. The Siyakhuluma Project is officially collaborating with the isiZulu discipline from the Edgewood Campus. Tholani Hlongwa, who is a lecturer and PH.D. candidate in Language Education (Pedagogy), is working with The Siyakhuluma Project as her required community engagement project. Her PH.D is focused on the development of the isiZulu second language syllabus. Tholani taught the pilot course and currently teaches their adult isiZulu course twice a week in Durban North. The Siyakhuluma Project is offering preschools a flexible isiZulu programme that is structured as an extra-curricular activity.

Ethembeni School for the Disabled was overjoyed with the twelve much-needed, brand new walkers which they received from Setzkorn Health and Wealth Consulting. Every year the business donates travel mugs as a memento to the Ethembeni graduates at their final prize-giving assembly. At last year’s handover, the Setzkorn family became distinctly aware of the need for walkers and this became part of their personal and corporate social responsibility initiative for 2015. Every year Fallon Setzkorn, a Grade 12 pupil at St Mary’s DSG, chooses a different charity to get involved in, with the Jess Foord Foundation and the SPCA being amongst them.
“Handing over the walkers to Ethembeni has been a highlight for me. I was amazed by how the learners care for each other. It was an experience I will never forget,” said Fallon.
Ethembeni School Receives WalkersEthembeni School in Cato Ridge thrives on discipline, stimulation and pupil activity. Established in 1984, the state-subsidised school caters for learners with physical disabilities or who are visually impaired. The well-run school has a total enrolment of 300 learners, all of whom board in hostels on the grounds. The school follows the mainstream curriculum from the foundation stage up to Grade 7 and then offers skills training for learners who have completed their academic education. These skills include agriculture, literacy, numeracy, technology, life skills, hairdressing, woodwork and needlework, amongst others. One hundred and four dedicated and passionate staff members form part of the establishment and consist of educators, therapists, nursing staff, a psychologist and caregivers.

Golden Gateway School caters for the needs of 194 learners who are severely intellectually impaired. Eighty percent of the learners are from previously disadvantaged communities and informal settlements. As a welfare organisation they depend on the goodwill and generosity of the local community and businesses to obtain the necessary funds to run the school. The school provides transport for its learners from various areas such as Chatsworth, Mobeni, Montclair, Woodhaven, Seaview, Manor Gardens, central Durban, Overport, Asherville, Sydenham, Sherwood, Bonella, Chesterville, Cato Manor Informal Settlement and Cato Crest. For 2016 they would like to embark on an “adopt a child” concept, where they will appeal to individuals or business organisations to adopt one learner at the cost of R3 000 per annum or a bank stop order for R300 per month for 10 months (February to November). This will cover the school and

Fellow questers, many of you find helping your child with school work a daunting task. When did a simple addition sum become so long and complicated? Have you ever found yourself wanting to scream out at your child’s school and say; “You broke me!”? Let’s join forces and make learning fun again. Let’s go on a journey together where I can share with you a few tips and tricks and make you the homework hero once again.
With technology and the help of Google, children are getting information a lot quicker and easier – but is it making parents’ input obsolete? Don’t you miss the “what and why” questions? I wouldn’t mind hearing a few of those once in a while. Let’s become our kids “go-to” guides once again. Education matters, but so does the individual learning experience. Let’s inspire our children to enquire again. Future articles will include ‘Maths Madness – Taking You From Zero to Hero’, ‘On the Ball Taal – Afrikaans’, ‘Word Nerd – Spelling and Reading Know-How’.

Posh Valentine’s Movie Date As Durbanites, we live in one of the most beautiful parts of the World, with the most amazing Summer season to boot. So why not take advantage of a magnificent Durban Summer evening this Valentine’s Day, and have a romantic date in your own garden? Posh Events has some top tips for your Posh DIY Valentine’s Garden Movie Night:• Hire or borrow a projector and projection screen, and choose a few of your favourite movies – go to extra effort choosing movies that have a special meaning to you as a couple. Remember to provide a basic sound system to complete the “outdoor theatre” experience.• Spread a large, white picnic blanket out on the lawn, along with a variety of red decorative scatter cushions, and a few large comfy pillows. • Lighting is a huge factor to keep in mind when planning any event setup – set the mood with a variety of hurricane lanterns and candles. A few citronella candles thrown in the mix will help keep any unwelcome mozzies and bugs away. String some fairy-lights in a few tree-branches for ambient lighting.• Pack a picnic basket with a scrumptious dinner for two, and don’t forget your favourite wine. To really impress your date, set up a popcorn bar with a variety of popcorn, spices and some extra snacks.
Have a posh Valentine’s Day!

Party LifeKids’ Parties at
The Coffee Corner The Coffee Corner at @Tap Community Centre, situated at the Durban North Baptist Church in Mackeurtan Avenue, is a haven where moms and kids can go to relax and have fun in a safe environment. The large play area and delicious food and coffee have made it a favourite among local moms. The Coffee Corner recently hosted my son’s second birthday party. For a reasonable fee, they provide the venue, tables, table cloths and cutlery – including the setup of all of this. You are welcome to bring in your own décor and food for the kids. Their only requirement is that you order the adults’ food from them – they have a lovely range of platters and cakes to choose from that are reasonably priced and really scrumptious! They cordon off a section of the outside area exclusively for your party and if it rains (as it did on my son’s birthday) they do have a lovely indoor venue. This really is the perfect venue for a party as the kids can entertain themselves and the parents can relax a bit, knowing their children are safe. Oliver’s party was a fun and stress-free event, thanks to The Coffee Corner. I didn’t have to worry about the setup or the cleaning up at the end of the day – what a pleasure! I would really recommend this venue to other parents. You can book your party date and order the platters online so it’s super convenient!

Single Parents’ Social Club.Cathy Pollock 084 240 [email protected]
Awesome Children’s Recreation with onCloud9
onCloud9 was founded by Grant Rosenkowitz in Cape Town nine years ago. It is a children’s recreation business which offers themed birthday parties, weekend outings to interesting places and holiday programmes for children aged four to 13. There are also a number of services like house sitting, babysitting and au-pairing. The Durban branch was started last year by Cathy Pollock. As a single parent of two she understands the need for these services. “After all the challenges I faced raising two children on my own and speaking to many other single parents, I realised there was a real need for a community centred business like this in Durban. I started this business to be able to provide other parents with the opportunity to provide their children and themselves with a well-rounded life.” All holiday programmes are geared at being fun and educational and are fully supervised by Cathy and student teachers. Cathy also plans to start a single parents’ group where single parents can meet once a week and interact with other single parents. There will be a babysitter for the children. They offer cakes and party packs which are delivered to you on the day. There are various themes and colours to choose from. They also arrange baby showers, bridal showers and adult birthdays – they organise everything from start to finish, taking the strain off you. Cathy is qualified as an Arty Tots and Arty Kids’ host. This is a wonderful programme that uses art to build children’s creativity and fine motor skills.
