Mullum Matters

Mullum provides a quality learning experience in an environment of care and respect to produce responsible and informed citizens for the future.

bottom of my bag to find money for milk and

bread. I had earlier refused to buy new

basketball shoes and had clearly and

repeatedly stated that we had no money.

A current student shared with me that he

wasn’t sleeping because even though Dad

was in another room watching scary movies,

he saw the images when he walked past and

it was giving him nightmares.

Our push on being an UPSTANDER is also

paying off with many children taking

appropriate action when they see something

in the school that they feel uncomfortable

about. They are struggling slightly with

distinguishing the difference between

‘dobbing’ and ‘upstanding’ behaviour and this

will be the focus of our next MULLUM

FAMILY MEETING.

How Do We Know What To Teach?

Our curriculum is guided by the Victorian

Curriculum which is broken down into year

levels. This gives the teachers the base of

what they need to cover each year. Of course

students are at different levels, some

operating below, at or above the expected

level. Our teachers plan for where the

students are at (point of need), and aim to

take them further along the continuum. Staff

continuously review data to identify a

student’s point of growth and plan

accordingly. This results in classroom

activities that are open ended enough

allowing students to be coached to achieve

individual success or a classroom where

several groups are working at various

How gorgeous was this lovely summer

encouraging children to play less hectic

games, drink lots of water and to take off their

jumpers. It amazes me to see little red faces

after lunch and their jumpers still on. Luckily

for us, all of our classrooms are air

conditioned – thanks to the wonderful

fundraising by parents.

Our Dance-a-thon, once again is a success. It

always is an event that all students willingly

participate in. Thank you to all parents who

helped out and in particular Emily and Daniels

Mum Deb who co-ordinated the event this

year, and Mr Mac for his DJ’ing.

During the last two weeks we have had a

huge push on the impact of PUT DOWNS and

this week we have celebrated WORLD

KINDNESS DAY. We hope that everyone is

kind every day, however we have certainly

seen an increase in kind gestures around the

school. All teachers have a particular

colleague that they have to be particularly kind

to and we celebrate this with the children. We

have a firm belief that teachers need to model

the behaviour that they expect.

This is also true for parents. Your children are

learning tasks. We are fortunate at

Mullum that our staffing model allows

for small groups to work intensively

with a staff member when it is

identified that a student or students

need extensive and explicit ongoing

instruction.

Welcome back to Caroline (School Chaplain) who was

recently injured in a motor bike accident.

Farewell Mr Eddy who is embarking on a new career. We

are very sorry to see him go; however, wish him all the very

best with his new adventure. Also good luck to Ms Hill who

is currently recovering from surgery.

Some things to celebrate:

Well done to James F who has been offered amazing

scholarships at neighbouring independent schools. James

also did extremely well with his ICAS scores. James

achieved a high distinction in Maths and Distinctions in

Science, Spelling, Digital tech and Writing. Congratulations

to Wesley A for his distinction in Maths and Digital

technologies, Joy J for her Distinctions in English and

Digital technologies. Also to Evvie B for her distinction in

Spelling and Isaac Y for his Distinction in Digital

technologies. Well done to all the other students who chose

to sit the ICAS exams for your Merit, Credit and

Participation awards.

To the many students who came runners up in the Netball

Grand Final. Beaten in the last game however I believe the

prelim’ was the game of the season!!

The various keyboard students who are under the

instruction of Mrs Matthews who received first class

honours and honours in their recent examinations.

Elizabeth W and Hans J respectively. We have thoroughly

enjoyed hearing all of Mrs Matthews’ students perform at

each assembly. This week we will have some very talented

students playing the violin.

I apologise that I did not thank the tireless work at our last

working bee. The families who dismantled cubby houses,

cleared the veggie garden and fox proofed the chicken

coop, re-built the tyres and safely secured them and

generally a very good clean up. Thank you everyone and

in particular to our terrific Business Manager Kelli Heriot

and her family who tackled the overgrown chook area.

PS. gee the sausages and icy poles afterwards were good!

Mullum Basketball Team

I have a few parents who are keen to establish Mullum

Primary School Basketball Teams.

At this stage we are calling for expressions of interest only.

Please note that the school supports this initiative,

however, it is not a school event.

Basic information is as follows:

Games are after school on the days above and

parents need to arrange transport.

Each team will need a coach.

Uniforms will also need to be arranged once teams

are established.

TEAM COSTS— (usually shared amongst all players)

$40.00 team entry

$27.00 per game each week

INDIVIDUAL COSTS—$2.50 entry to venues for

spectators and players

Please inform the office if your child would like to join one

of the new teams—this information will be passed on to

the organisers.

Have a lovely weekend,

Carolyn

COOKING PIKELETS

Our newly arrived students from China and South Korea

experienced an enjoyable activity which resulted in eating

delicious food.

This was achieved whilst

helping our students learn

commonly used English

terms, by reading recipes,

expanding their vocabulary

and encouraging lots of

discussion and laughter.

Mullum Netball Club

The grade 5/6s took part in 2 Ultimate Frisbee training

sessions during our PE classes. It involved 2 coaches

(Jacqui and Michael from Eastern Ultimate) coming to

Mullum Primary School and teaching us some skills such

as throwing and catching. It was loads of fun.

It was interesting to learn a new sport. I thought Frisbee

was a game not a sport. – Dilly St J

It was fun and unique - Evvie B

It was fun to learn a different unique sport, with Jacqui and

Matt- Sophie J

I thought I knew all the sports- Blayden F

It is very different to all the other sports- Sarah Pr

I learnt how to throw a forehander – Clay

If anyone wants to come and learn how to play come

check out the information below.

Thanks Jacqui and Michael for teaching us about Ultimate

Frisbee.

A few weeks ago, 5 5/6 girls and 1 boy played in a netball

grand final against Norwood Heights Netball Club. We

played a really good game but Norwood was a really good

team and they won 11-21. We worked really well as a

team. It was an achievement for us to get to the grand final

as we changed coach half way though the year and we

were on the bottom of the ladder in the 1st season.

By Sarah P, Annaleise A, Cassandra W, Dilly S, Curtis K

In the grade 5/6, we’ve been working on our own brand

new toy’s in groups of 2,3 or 4 to sell (with fake money) to

the grade 1/2s. Each group was given $50 (fake money) to

buy their materials from Mr. Eddy’s all recycled or donated

shop.

Unlike the last few times our school has done this, we

have a new list of materials to choose from like LED’s,

batteries and wires!

In class we have also been working on marketing trick’s so

we can improve the way we advertise our toys.

Last week we practiced working in a production line, as if

we are in a factory, making 4 identical items with 4 pieces

of paper. We will have to do this next week to produce 4

identical items / toys to sell for Mullum Money. We wrote a

procedural text to follow step - by - step.

Volume is how much of a substance is in an area. The volume changes when you add or take away some of the substance either going higher or lower. The capacity is how much volume the container can take. It depends on the shape, the length and the width.- Will

We used ml and L to see how much volume there is. Eden

Over a couple of days in 3/4 we have been learning about Volume and Capacity. Volume is what is in it and capacity is the amount that something can hold. Taryn

Foundation News By Lauren Walsh

This term, Foundation students have enjoyed learning

about different fairy tales. We have had a number of hands

on language experiences to develop vocabulary and

engage students in the topic.

These photos describe some of these experiences –

1 Can you guess whose legs were on our ceiling?

2 We tasted porridge, just like G___________.

3 We dressed and described a huge, evil, furious giant.

We have studied the structure of a narrative story; the

beginning where the setting and characters are

introduced, the middle where there is usually a problem

and the end where the problem gets resolved. We will be

writing, editing and publishing our own stories this week.

Here are some of our very first attempts at writing a

narrative story.

Arya – One day there was a bear. He lived in a cave. He

was happy in his cave but one day a boy came and

distracted him. The bear told the boy to stop.

Lucas – On Monday Sam went to find a mountain. He

came up the mountain and he came all the way up. Now

Sam can’t climb down because his legs are tired. Then

he slowly climbed down.

Auryn – One day Sally went to the shops but a volcano

erupted. Then Sally ran away. She ran to her house but

the house melted so she had to find another house.

Ameer – One day an octopus was finding food but there

is a shark and the shark wanted to eat the octopus. The

octopus went to get out and she did. Do you know how

the octopus got out? A little fish helped the octopus and

the octopus was very happy because they little fish

helped him.

Makyiah – One day there was a boy who was called

Callum and he was at the ice cream shop. It melted and

then mum said you should go in to a shady spot. He went

to find some shade but there was no shade.

Mimi – One day a unicorn met a girl in the forest. The girl

liked the unicorn. It was cute. The unicorn liked her too.

The mum didn’t like the unicorn but the girl showed her

mum how amazing the unicorn was.

Farewell Duncan, Kid’s Hope Mentor By Jenny Verheijden

STEM Excursion—A Big Day in Junior by Sam Younes

How lucky are we!

On the 15th of November, 25 students were chosen to

represent Mullum at the first EVER ‘Big Day In Junior’

event held in Victoria.

I was one of the lucky children who was chosen. We made

the best of a late start by looking at the F1 in Schools

presentation where we got to race mini Formula 1 cars.

Later we moved on to work with Adobe where we learned

how to draw even if we can’t draw at all! We used Adobe

Sketch and we all had a great time!

Finally we finished the day with RMIT university where we

did some coding in Light Bot.

The day was a great success in my eyes!

Farewell and Thank You to Duncan Todd, a Kid’s Hope

Mentor who is stepping away from the mentoring role he

has taken on with great enthusiasm for the last 13 years—

as long as the program has been running at Mullum

Primary School

Duncan has mentored several of our senior students,

building bird houses and completing model cars and

planes.

His most recently mentored student, Jason M, gave purple

petunias on behalf of the school as thanks for his service.

Duncan gave Jason the completed model plane they have

been working on together.

Over the years students always looked forward to Duncan

coming for one hour each week. Duncan has developed

positive connections with the students and staff he has

worked with, he has helped with BBQ’s and fundraising

events and we thank him from the bottom of our hearts for

all he has done for the students of Mullum Primary School

in his 13 years here.

We wish him all the best.
