EXTRACTS FR OM "THE ECHO"

The Messenger, A Central City newspaper of a few years ago , in its issue of Sept . 15, 1949 , carried extracts from an 1880 issue of The Muhlenberg Echo, a newspaper started in Greenville in the late 1870's and lasting until the early 1890 ' s . It is believed that some of the items may be of interest and perhaps value to our reader s , so are reprinting the abstracts in full .

On Thursday evening of last week, too late for publication in last week's Echo , information of a sad accident at Owensboro Junction reached us , the particulars of which are as follows:

Mr . E . s. McMannon of Owensboro , having leased the Ross mines which have been lying idle for several years , commenced on that day, with the assistance of John Griffith and Lon s Stroud to remove from the shaft of the mine the water with which it was filled within 35 feet of the surface . They were drawing the water out with the cage when it caught in the shaft in some manner and could not be worked . Griffith went down the shaft to see what was the matter , but said on starting that he thought there was foul air down there and wanted them to pull him up instantly when he gave the signal .

When within a few feet of the water he found it impossible to remain longer , and called to those above to hoist him. They began to hoist, and at the same time Griffith, overcome by the foul air, lost his grip and fell under the cage , but got one of his feet entangled in the cage which held him suspended in the horrible atmosphere.

Realizing that something was wrong , those above bec ame excited and stopped . Stroud then announced that he was going down to he l p his comrade , but was begged not to risk his life by McMannon and others . He would not listen to them , however , and descended the rope , but when only a few feet down the awful choke damp struck him and he fell lifeless into the water , missing the cage .

Another and a successful attempt was made to hoist the cage , but life was extinct in poor Griffith ' s body by the time it reached the surface , suspended by one foot. Grappling hook s were then lowered for Stroud ' s body , and, after two unsuccessful efforts , it was removed . Afterward a lighted lamp was lowered into the shaft , but when 15 feet down it was extinguished, which shows how quickly death ensued to t h e unfortunate men .

John Griffith and his brave comrade Lons Stroud were buried at Owensboro Junction on Friday in the presence of a large crown of their friends .

This tale of an 1880 coal mine disaster concerns the present town of Central City , at that time a small village known as Owensboro Junction . The newspaper carrying the ac count, the Muhlenberg Echo , was publishe d in Greenvil le by Urey Woodson, later publ1~her of the Owensboro Mes s enger- and national Democratic c ommi tteeman.

Other news of Owensboro Junction in the Sept . 3 issue included : A good sized crowd as s embled at Owensboro Junction last Saturday , when a Hancock pole was raised and speeches were made by Messrs . O. C. Vanlandingham and Q. B . Colema n, and a colored man named Henry Wickliffe , who has always been a Democrat. Mrs . E. V. Buckley , who keeps a hotel and saloon at the Junction , stood the entire expens e of r aising the pole and buying the flag . She claims to be the only woman in the Unit ed States who has raised a political pole .

Elsewhere , among the personals : " Col. R. M. Martin , who made such a memorable record in this vicinity during the war, was mar ried on the 10th to Miss Carlone B . Wardlow , of Christianburg , Va ."

Incidental intel ligence : Mr. Zeke Ri c e ( Country Ze k e ) had his foot badly mashed at a barn raising last week . - - Messrs . Felix Ri ce and Doc Arnold have embar ked in the mu l e buying business , and have now on hand 25 pretty specimens of the obstinate creatures . - - Greenville has the best hotels in the State . - - Jolly John Briz is the wit of Gre enville .

Lewis Reno ·is too nice a man to be a Republ ican . - - Greenbackers abuse Democrats for the njnn of the Republicans . -- Louis McCown · is the most popular nocjety younp man in Greenville . - - Many ex - Mur phys refused to sign the temperance pledge Tuesday night. -- The Echo continues to thrive and grow, despite the enmi t y of a half dozen Republ icans in Greenville , who would give $100 each to see it die .

The "Belle of Greenville" - -and who is she? has not adopted the plan of her Franklin County contemporary referred to by the temperancelecturer , of eschewing the society of young men not strictly temperate . -- A few Garfield sovereigns attended the picnic at South Carrollton Saturday . I suppose the Gods were propitious as the black cloud brought rain.- There is a young man in South Carrollton , who , if bought at the value he places on himself

and sold at his real worth, wouldn't leave the Rothchilds sufficient cash to buy a ginger cake.

Reprinted from the Crittenden Press is the following article: Greenville bored a public well to the depth of 117 feet, and abandoned it because no water was found. The ''ell Woodson gave his political opponents previous to the last election was so hot that it evaporated all the water in that section.

The Echo carried an official directory of all State and County officials. The Cou~ty directory included Circuit Judge R. C. Bowling; Commonwealth's Attorney D. C. Walker: Circuit Clerk, N. J. Harris; County Judge, J. C. Thompson; County Attorney, W. B. McCown: County Court Clerk, J. E. Reno; Sheriff, George O. Prowse: Jailer, John Miller; Assessor, D. R. Rhoads; Surveyor, William Armstrong; Coroner, W. B. James.

The above quoted copy of The Echo was dated Sept. 3, 1880, and in 1949 was owned by J. H. Staples, of Central City.

===~=-==-=-=============--===-==-=======================================-=====-~~====-===~ SHANKS FAMILY

Recently both the Central City Library and the Harbin Memorial Library have been the recipientc:• of a new book entitled "The Shanks Family From Pequea Creek." It is a most interesting and well-done work, and will have interest for many people in this area, as well as some who are far from here. For those who may wish to own a copy, it can be ordered from the author, Mr. J. Arthur Shanks, 205 S. Broadway, Providence, Ky., at a price of $30.00. It is beautifully printed, has many illustrations, is arranged in a most unusual manner -- and is completely indexed:
