The Luzerne mine was opened at once and developed rapidly, until production was up to 1,000 tons daily. It was later increased to 1,250 tons.

On December 22,1900, a post office was opened in the new village, with Andrew W. DUNCAN as postmaster. On January 14,1901, William G. DUNCAN became the postmaster.

In 1903, the comapny increased their coal holding in the county by adding the Graham deposits, bringing the comapny mineral deposits to about 7,000 acres.

By 1907,the Luzerne mines produced 186,798 tons of coal for the year. Four years later in 1911, the mines produced 190,395 tons and was holding steady.

A comapny store, school and comapny houses had been built. The mine manager was O.C.ROLL, foreman, and William BETHEL

was his assistant CHRISTIAN was chief electrican. The mines were equipped with the latest electric machinery

both for hauling and mining at that time. This consisted of a railroad system with JEFFERY motors and one and a half and two coal cars, electric cutters to undercut the coal and electric lights in the main parts of the mines. Electricity for the residents was furnished by the company powerhouse.

Company coal sales offices and a storage yard at Louisville advertised "Luzerne Coal".

JARVIS Valley was the name of the original opening. Another mine entrance was known as the MCDONALD opening. Both were located on the right as you pass through Luzerne today on highway KY 601.

In March 19,1912 Miss Anne M. JONES became the postmaster of Luzerne. She was to be the last and to serve as postmaster for over 39 years.

The Luzerne mines remained good producers for more than 50 years. The mine employed (during peak years, especially 1927) around 200 men.

Luzerne, like Graham, earned the reputation of being a neat and orderly town. The houses, like the mining equipment, were kept in good repair and with a measure of pride.

Some of the family names who lived in Luzerne in the past generations include.ALLEN,BAKER,BETHEL,BOGGESS,BROWN,COVINGTON, CRAFT, DAY, DANNER,DENNY,DANZY,DUKES,DURALL,EARLES,EVITTS,EUBANKS FARMER,FERRELL,FAIRCHILD,GILL,GIVENS,GOFF,HARPER,HALL,HELTSLEY, HENDRICKS,HOLMES,HOWELL,JACKSON,JENKINS,JOHNSON,JONES,LATHAM, LONEY,LOSTUTTER,LOWELL,MANSFIELD,MADDOX,MASSEY,MAGANHEIMER,NOSLEY MORRIS,MCCLAIN,MCDONALD,MCINTOSH,NELSON,NOFFSINGER,NORRIS,PAXTON, PETTY,PENTECOST,POWELL,RAYMER,ROBERTS,ROLLEY,RENDER,RICHARDS, SALLEE,SMITH,SOUTHARD,SULLIVAN,SKAGGS,STEWART,THOMAS,THOMPSON, TYSON,UNDERWOOD,VINCENT,VINSON,VICK,WEBB,WILSON,WELLS,WILLIAMS, WILKEY,AND WRIGHT.

One of the company store managers that some remember was Ned HARPER and the clerks were Raymond CRAIG,his son Edmund, Joe LOVELL,Sr. Virgil BIVINS,Mrs.Powell LOVELL,Joe LOVELL,Jr., Kate JONES, Jimmy DUNCAN and Annie JONES.

There were a number of comapny doctors, but tow that are remembered are Dr.GATES and Dr. MOORE.

Mine foremen at the Luzerne mines were O.C.ROLL,Albert

DUNCAN, and Claud CORNETTE. Room bosses included Clell VINCENT, Hugh LOVELL,Walter ROBERTS and A.O.{Chris) ROLL.

The Luzerne mines worked out in 1939 and shut down at the time. A truck dumping station arrangement was put into operation in order to utilize the main mine tipple and surface mining was started to claim the unmined coal that was left.

On May 31,1951,Annie M. JONES retired as postmaster at Luzerne after serving almost 40 years at that job.

Two months later the office was discontinued. The closing was a blow. The loss of service and prestige to the village took some years to recover from.

In December 1957 the surface mining operations worked out and closed down. The final work was completed in December 1958,leaving Luzerne without some type mining industry for the first time in over fifty years.

Although only five miles from Greenville, Luzerne boasted its own small depot and the service of four passenger trains daily, two going north and the other two south bound. By now these too,are gone.

Like so many former mining towns,Luzerne has now joined the group as a bedroom community, with residents either retired or working in other localities.

The pride instilled at Luzerne in the opening years of the - century is still quite evident today.

LYNN CITY

The little village that never quite made it to "town size"

It was a big gamble and with his life savings at stake, would it pay off? Only time would tell.

Back in 1905,George R.LYNN of Madisonville bought a 72.5 acre of land sprawled across both sides of the right-of-way of the Madisonville,Hartford and Eastern (M.H.& E.) Railroad, at a point two miles east of Millport.

Few people lived near the location and the rail line had not been built yet, but therein lies a tale.

By the summer of 1909, the new track was laid and a temporary depot consisting of a work car on a siding-had been spotted on the site.

The Lynn acreage had been surveyed into scores of lots and 14 named streets-names like SISK,COFFMAN and BARBEE Avenues and NEAL,BENNETT,GISH,AND HOLMAN Streets-for his friends. Plans had been made for the establishment of an ideal town.

LYNN was an ambitious man and like MONTAIGNE,he was planning on a small town of some renown.

It was wheat threshing time in the area and after all lots had been marked off with small flags, plats were prepared and a big promotional barbeque and sale day was announced by George LYNN.

People came from miles around, because,as some reasoned why not go and see what this man LYNN had in mine for such a nice location. It was about two miles northwest of Bremen and two miles east of Millport. John T.WHITMER ran a two-seated,one horse

Page 7: Muhlenberg County Heritage Volume 16, Number 3

PAGE 64 "THE HERITAGE' VOL.16 NO.3 JUL AUG SEPT 1994 ****************************************************************

surrey from Bremen all day, charging fifteen-cents each way to the new town site. According to Guy R. NOFFISNGER,88, of Bremen, who attended and remembers it well, there were hundreds of lookers at the event and John T. WHITMER had a good day.

Few sales were made at the time, but a spirit of understanding and patience was shown by LYNN,who believed that a town would soon be built at the location.

Shortly thereafter a fine depot was built and an agenttelegrapher was assigned to the location.

The village eventually had two stores,a blacksmith shop, barber shop, tobacco "factory" where the leaf was bought,"prized" into hogshead and stored for shipment to Louisville or the eastern markets to be made into cigarettes, cigars, smoking and chewing tobacco and snuff. A Mr. RILEY owned the tobacco ''receiving house" as it was called and W.A.THOMAS of Sacramento weighed the leaf and made out the checks inpayment.

In recalling the times, NOFFSINGER recently told of life in that area from the standpoint of a rural farm boy. He pointed out that one of the inevitable farm chores of those days, one that was shared practically all county folk was making, repairing, cleaning and oiling the harnesses. He recalled ordering a side of cured leather from Sears,Roebuck,(they sold bulk leather in those days) and making the harness for his horse. "I also got the knives and tools for working the leather,he added.

The retired mail carrier explanied how harness oil was made from a formula of tallow, unsalted lard and made black as coal with lampblack.

He related that in order to clean the harness it was taken apart and carefully placed so as not to mix parts of sets (if you were working with several harnesses).

"Knowing the parts of harnesses was something any farm boy had to learn at a young age," NOFFISNGER explained, he had to know a single harness from a double harness,a buggy harness from one used in farming operation. Whatever the kind of harness,he knew the head gear, bridle, blinds, check reins, bit, lines with numerous buckles; that the parts of the body harness were the saddle, belly band, crupper, hip strips, and breeching. In a double harness was the complicated crossing of the two lines apart and there might be much trouble if the parts of each harness were not separated.

NOFFSINGER pointed out that a wash-tub was used in the cleaning operation, half filled with hot water and with four cups of baking soda added. He explained how the leather parts of the harness went into the tub and were scrubbed throughly with a stiff brush, removing all dirt and grease. He said the leather was then hung and allowed to dry for a few minutes.

The next step was the oiling and this was done after the tallow-lard-lampblack mixture had been heated to about as hot as the skin could stand. The homemade oil mixture was rubbed in by hand.

All metal parts (usually of brass) mainly buckles, were polished to a high finish. Then everything was reassembled."It was a good feeling when you had washed, greased, repaired and put together all the sets of harness for another's years use,he said.

Eventually John MARKWELL had a nine-room hotel built from,a partially prefabricated building obtained from Sears,Roebuck and Company (who, incidently had a fine reputation for such a building in those days).

One of the regulars at the hostely was RILEY, the tobacco house owner. Rooms where a dollar a day, including three meals. Meals where twenty-five cents at the establishment.

The first depot agent at Lynn City was William Leslie GINGER he sold passenger tickets, supervised the loading of logs, hoghead of tobacco-where a special boom was used to handle the heavy containers-cattle and hogs though special chutes from the holding pens, chickens into special "chicken cars" provided by the railroad, and milk and cream that was shipped from Lynn City daily.

Finis SHELTON ran the blacksmith shop in the village and like most other smithys was looked upon as the local mechanic, carpenter, metal and leather smith. The blacksmith shop was often the most important place of business in the hamlet.

The second depot agent was Clyde BROWNING. After retiring from railroad work. BROWNING entered the furniture and decorating business in Owensboro. The third agent was a Mr.STEELE who lived in Madisonville and is remembered as having used a kind of bicycle, adapted to fit the rails which he rode back and forth to work.

Albert CLARK,a young but veteran railroader from,Indiana, was the last depot agent at Lynn City and arrived in the fall of 1928.A little more than a year later,in the spring of 1930,the depot was closed by the M,H &E. During and after operating days of the station,C.S.GREEN was custodian of the facility.

In the early days the Bond Tie and Lumber Company as wellknown concern, maintained a crew at Lynn City. It consisted of brothers Virgil,Frank and Ellis GISH and Hudson DAUGHTERY. Beverly GISH was killed in an accident near the railroad crossing one afternoon. The mishap was witnessed by his mother.

The Koppers Company of Pittsburg finally bought the tie company and moved the crew to Madisonville.

Adding to the busy depot activity were the merchants from Sacramento who came often to pick up produce and dry stores shipped to them by rail.

The first store to be built at the village was a large, two story structure, with living quarters on the second floor. It was built and run by Tom and Lula PEVELER and later by Bill ANDERSON and finally by Harrison Clay (H.C.) FELTY.

A second store was built later (still standing and converted to a dwelling) it was run by Sam ROBINSON (who had it built),Ed LACEFIELD,John Billy PHILLIPS,C.S.GREEN,John ROBY,W.A.MOORE and Matthew William VAUGHT.

The names of the families that lived in Lynn City and nearby included: ALBIN,ANDERSON,BARBEE,BENNETT,BROOKS,BROWN,BROWNING, COMPTON,CLARK,CONWAY,DAUGHTERY,EMBRY,FELTY,GISH,GRUNDY,GREEN, GINGER,GALLOWAY,HUMPHREY,JAMES,LACEFIELD,LYONS,MARKWELL,MILLER, MOORE,MARTIN,MCDONALD,MCCANDLESS,NEAL,NEWTON,PARKER,PEVELER, PHEGLEY,PHILLIPS,ROBINSON,SATTERFIELD,SHELTON,STEELE,TODD,VINCENT WELBORN,WHITMER,WILKINS,WARD,AND WIGGINS.

For recreation, the village never had a poolroom, but the men

and boys played a lot of baseball on the diamond in back of the depot. Marbles were usually played in front of stores. Old timers say the small town had its fair share of ice cream suppers and tent meetings.

Today, there are about half dozen houses standing in the middle of what originally intended as mid-town Lynn City. That's fewer dwellings than shortly after the big barbeque and promotion day back 75 years ago. It has always been a fine neighborhood, with some of the county's best citizens. It's too bad the town didn't develop as George R.LYNN had planned. At least he tried.
