A developing user-oriented database for pesticides
(CIS895, MSE Project---Phase 1)
![Page 10: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
Problem Statement
Pesticides were created to control pests and improve human living quality. Pesticide selection and application are based on following two considerations:
Pests
Cost
![Page 11: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Problem Statement
One problem solved
Many new problems created
Hazardous potential to eco-system
I. Kill non-target organisms (natural enemy)
Hazardous potential to the environment
I. Water pollution
II. Soil pollution
III. Pesticide residues in food
![Page 12: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Sources: http://www.pesticides.gov.uk/committees/WPPR/discdoc.pdf
Example: pesticide residues in food
1: Additive effect of pesticide residue? 2: Interaction between these residues? 3: some cancer-related; 4: some birth defect-related.
![Page 13: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/13.jpg)
Problem Statement
Existing pesticide databases:
Pest-oriented
Product-oriented
Administration-oriented
User-oriented?
![Page 14: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Problem Statement
A new pesticide database with following features:
User-oriented
Be able retrieve safety information
Allow applicators to find the most safe pesticide product in pest control
program
![Page 15: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Purpose
Provide an easy tool for users
Storage and retrieval data
Accessible to public
Ultimately, reduce and minimizing the usage of certain hazardous pesticides via using this database
![Page 16: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/16.jpg)

Benefits (intangible)
• Data information easily to accessible for publics (final deliverable product only)
• Reducing or minimizing negative influence of pesticides
• Protecting the environment (underground waters and ecosystems)
![Page 26: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
My responsibility(in the proposed project)
• Data collections
• Date transformations– PLP (High, Mid, Low)– TD50 (High, Mid, Low)
• Database designs
![Page 27: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
Project Cost?
The SW cost estimation is not applicable to my MSE Project due to following reasons. 1) The critical parts of this project are data collections and data transformations (including categorization), which may take approximately one year for 2 persons to complete the tasks. The reviewing process alone for data transformations may take to 4-6 months, ensuring that general publics understand the interfaces and all terminologies used. 2) Several automate tools will be used for the proposed program. One tool we will use in interface design is Microsoft FrontPage (2000), which can automatically generate desired user interfaces. Another tool we will use is Oracle9i, which is hugely different from the previous Oracle versions (e. g., Oracle8i). Oracle9i provide the user interfaces for database designs, database constraint implementations, data populations, and data manipulations (insert, modify, delete, update, etc.).
1.Based upon project plan
1.Person-hour: 1108 hours,
2.Cost: $110,800
2.Based upon COCOMO (4600 = LC)
1.Person-hours: 1350 hours
2.Cost: $135,000
![Page 28: MSE PROJECT Fengyou Jia Department of Computing and Information Science Kansas State University (CIS895, Spring 2003)](https://reader035.vdocuments.site/reader035/viewer/2022081519/56649e025503460f94aebf8f/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
