Every institution has its unique research challenges, though few have the support, equipment and infrastructure available to bring research to the next level. At MSE, every single graduate student is given hands-on practical experience for any equipment required. With an aim of adding value to the graduate students’ learning experience, we have invested in new equipment and invited eminent professors to conduct seminars, lectures and technical training in MSE. Students are given the opportunity to use multi-million dollar Transmission Electron Microscopes and other state-of-the-art research facilities. We see this as a necessity for our graduates to possess relevant and specialized skills that will enhance their future careers. It is this reason that we are able to produce high quality graduates that are highly sought-after all around the world.

ReseaRch achievements MSE has a consistent history of patents creation and technology commercialization. The world’s first completely-dissolving heart stent patent was created right here in MSE. Ree-Trakt, the first disposable soft-tissue surgical retractor system, has met with commercial success and is currently already in use in the United States. In 2009, MSE researchers successfully won Proof-of-Concept and Proof-of-Value grants for the commercialization of technologies such as printed batteries, supercapacitors and peptide-eluting stents, totaling $1.5 Million awarded by SPRING Singapore. In addition, MSE has successfully won three Competitive Research Programme (CRP) awards from the National Research Foundation (NRF) amounting to $30 Million – a strong endorsement to our research capabilities.

Joint collaboRations and ReseaRch centRes A significant part of our research success is leveraged on our strong partnerships with universities and research institutions around the world. Imperial College London (UK), Linköping University (Sweden) and Technion – Israel Institute of Technology are just a few of the world-renowned institutions that MSE has established research collaborations with. In the extremely promising field of clean energy, we have teamed up with international companies and institutions such as Bosch, BASF, Vestas Technology R&D, California Institute of Technology (Caltech), Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB) to produce leading-edge technologies in energy harvesting and storage integration.

GRaduate enRichment At MSE, your research experience will be enhanced beyond Singapore’s shores. Outstanding graduate students will have the opportunity to attend international conferences and exchange programmes in Asia, Europe or US with financial support. The Ph.D. programme in MSE is truly like no other. My Ph.D. candidature at MSE has equipped me with a strong analytical and technical training. After a few years in an engineering role, I was able to apply my knowledge in a marketing field to produce business strategies and to provide analysis on current market trends. scholarshiPs For hiGher deGree studentsThe University provides full scholarships tocandidates with outstanding academic records to enable them to pursue a higher degree by research on a full-time basis.

The scholarship covers tuition fee and acomfortable living allowance. It is tenable for one year in the first instance and, subject to good progress, the University will renew this tenure for another year for the M.Eng. degree, and for three further terms of one year each for the Ph.D. degree.

overseas attachmentsWe offer overseas attachments to selectedstudents. These attachments generally covera period of 3 to 6 months at reputed US orEuropean universities. We have had studentsattached to the following institutions:

At the end of the higher degree candidature,the candidate is required to write and submit a thesis, which will be examined by internal and external examiners.

admission requirements For hiGher deGree ProGrammesApplicants with foreign basic degree are required to submit valid TOEFL and GRE scores. GATE score may be accepted in place of GRE for candidates with Indian basic degrees.

• FoR MASTER oF ENGINEERING (M.ENG.) PRoGRAMME

The normal requirement is a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Second Class Honours level or equivalent, from a recognized university in material science, materials engineering or a related field.

• FoR DoCToR oF PhILoSoPhy (Ph.D.) PRoGRAMME

The normal requirement is a Master’s degree in a relevant field from a recognized university. In addition, the candidate must possess a demonstrated ability to pursue independent research in his/her proposed field of research.
