Hello Race Fans! Happy Labor Day everybody !! Boy do I love these issues that are released on holidays. It sure makes it easy to get this column started. Anyhow, what a great holiday, we get to celebrate our jobs. You know that word that stands for “Just Over Broke”. The best part about it is, we get some extra time off from our jobs to go racing. This holiday is jammed pack full of racing opportunities. Depending on your discipline and what you are looking for your options are great. In motocross there are district point races, and there is a bike giveaway, a rather nice one as a matter of fact. In the harescramble world you can enjoy a barbecue and participate in a round of the PA State Series, and you short trackers have a Paul Crumling memorial benefit race. Wow, who needs family picnics with the in-laws, let alone where do you find the time. Just tell them you’re hanging out with your race family, what better way to spend the holiday. Be sure to check the pages of MRA for complete race schedules and happenings. Also in MRA this month we are celebrating Amateur National Champions from the area. There are quite a few of them, check out their bios inside and when you see them at the track give them a big high five, it is a major accom-plishment on their part. We also have local mx, harescramble and short track coverage. There are a lot of places to check out amateur race coverage, but no one covers the local racer better than MRA. One last thing while I have you. There’s another major holiday on the horizon, Christmas. Yes Christmas, I know some of you may be thinking, that’s months away. Think back though how fast the summer has slipped away, it will be here before you know it. OK, so what about Christmas? MRA Photos. MRA Photos make great Christmas gifts. attention raCersOn Sunday July 25, 2004 the Sunday Patriot News, one of the largest daily newspa-pers in the Central Pennsylvania region ran a 2 full page plus story about motocross racing. Ford Turner of the Patriot News exposed our sport of motocross to hundreds of thousands of people. They featured Willy and Garret Toth and their family and they showed the masses how great our sport truly is. The story started on the front page and continued into the main section of the newspaper and covered two full pages. Not too often does our sport get this kind of exposure into the mainstream, especially on a positive note. Ford Turner, his photographer and the Patriot News did a fantastic job of covering the lives of two of our local heroes as well as showing the rest of Central PA what a cool sport the rest of us participate in. Off the track Kelsey is a winner also, she is an honor roll student and she par-ticipates in the Big Sister/Big Brother program at her school. She also frequently helps kids of all ages right in her own back yard perfect their riding skills and helps them become better prepared for competition. Kelsey is an all around hotshot if you ask me. MRA would like to feature Wyatt Barto as this months Holeshot Hotshot. We caught up with Wyatt at Sleepy Hollow last month and as usual he was pulling the hole-shots in both of his classes. Wyatt is a consistent winner around the region, he is leading D-6 in the 4-6 oil division and is currently in second place in the 4-6 stock class, he missed a few races there due to some bike trouble. Wyatt is also shooting for his first track championship at Sleepy Hollow this season. It seems like wherever we bump into this young man, he is out front and on the gas. Wyatt has a ton of support from the family, his dad John holds an A card in the district and his Grammy is in charge of the whole racing effort. Keep an eye on this young hotshot, my bet is you’ll see him on the podium many times in the years to come, and watch out next month, you just might be the next MRA Holeshot Hotshot. Jim Bull MRA

8 2004 ama horizon award Winner - John lewis V Central Pennsylvania is a hotbed of talent for motorcycle flat track racers. Ever hear of names like Jake Johnson or Jared Mees, or who is that other guy, oh yeah Chris Carr. We could go on and on, Texter, Bromley, Heiser, I’m sure there are many more. How about the new guy, ever heard of him? If not you soon will. If you don’t know him already, let me introduce you to John M. Lewis V. Lewis is the 2004 AMA Horizon Award Winner for Amateur Grand National Dirt Track Racing. What is the Horizon Award you ask? The Horizon award is

given to the rider with the best chances of a pro career on the horizon. Wow !! Some might say it has to do with his geographic location, John lives just a few miles down the same road as Jared Mees who won the same award in 2001. I believe it was just hard work and raw talent from the 15 year old Lewis who resides in the little town of Brandamore just outside of Coatesville, PA. John started racing with the help of his father at the age of 6. His first race was a motocross event but John quickly made the switch to flat track racing. He has competed con-sistently over the years and has really started to come into his own in the last year or two. In 2003 John

won the number one plate in the 250 division as well as taking the number two spot in the inaugural running of the AMA Super Moto Series in Las Vegas. Not only did John win the Horizon Award while competing at the Amateur Dirt Track Nationals, he brought home three number one plates in three of the eight premier classes that the AMA has to offer. It has been years since another racer has accomplished that. That man was Georgie Price, just another dirt track racer from our region of the country.

John won overall champi-onships in the 250 modified two stroke, 450 modified and 505 mod-ified divisions. John won 8 of the 12 races he entered, he was tore down three times randomly by the AMA and once by a rider that pro-tested and he had a birthday all in the same week. I agree with the AMA, I

believe John has a great chance of becoming a truly great racer. John has been

racing super motard as well as flat track, and he desires to delve into the road race scene also. John will be attending the Kevin Schwantz Road Racing School in Atlanta Georgia at the end of August. cassidy Heiser Wins national championship on the Half Mile

Cassidy Heiser from York, PA has been racing flat track for several years now under the guidance of his father Steve. Steve is a veteran racer himself and has many championships under his belt (see MRA - October 2003). Steve and Cassidy made the trip for the first time together to the Grand Championships in Springfield, Illinois to showcase Cassidys talents on the 65cc machine and they came home winners. Racers compete in 4 different events while at the nationals, a short track, a TT, a half mile and the mile. Cassidy took the win to earn the title of “National Champion” in the half mile event. His consistent finishes in the remainder of his events was good for third overall in the 65 modified division. Back home Cassidy has been competing on an 85cc machine as well. Keep an eye on this young racer from Central PA, racing runs deep in his blood, combine that with his exceptional talents and I’m sure there’ll be more number 1 plates in his future.

Joe Bromley, the name goes hand in hand with motorcycles and motorcycle racing. Joe’s family has been in the motorcycle business since before he was born, his dad Bob founded Bromleys Motorcycles in 1959. Not only is Joe the sales manager at his families dealership, he’s held the office of president of our district for close to a decade and is the current vice president. Joe is also one of the promoters for the PA State Hare Scramble Series and is involved in all facets of motorcycle and ATV racing in the area. Joe continues the tradition with his sons, Danny and Joe; they are both involved with racing in one form or the other. Joe Bromley is a legend when it comes to the sport of motorcycles in general. Joe has won National Flat Track Championships 18 out of the 21 years he has been attending the nationals. His goal is to win 20 out of 25, who knows, he could win 22 out of 25. Kenny Venarchick Sweeps Four classes on His Way to national championship

Kenny Venarchick took it one big step further this year. The reining District 6 Champion from 2003 turned up the heat in Springfield, Illinois at the AMA Progressive Insurance Dirt Track Grand Championships. Kenny was the only youth rider to win all eight of his races, sweeping four classes on his way to winning the overall National Championship in the 50 Junior division. Way to go Kenny, very impressive to say the least. The Grand Championships are tough, there are four disciplines to compete in on the way to the overall, and to win them all is no small feat. Watch out for Kenny in 2005, he will concentrate mainly on motocross in the upcoming season. The goal, a Loretta Lynns National Championship, my bet is he’ll be there. Background: I began learning to ride on my home track at 2 years old. Two years later I began racing. By 1994 I had earned a 2nd overall at Loretta’s, my first Amateur National. I’ve qualified and been to Loretta’s every year for the last 10 years. In ‘03 I was unable to compete due to and injury.I progressed through the 50’s, 60’s, 80’s and onto big bikes in 2004 and in the path have had more than 800 overall wins. I rode for Kawasaki Team Green in ‘01 & ‘02. For 2003 and 2004 I signed on with American Suzuki.

Flying Dutchmen mxAugust 8, 2004

Bright skies and warm temperatures welcomed over 450 racers to the Flying Dutchmen Motorcycle Club in early August to do battle on their two courses for the five foot trophies they were offering on the day. The competition was fierce in both the youth and adult divisions offer-ing races for both motorcycles and ATV’s. MRA would like to give two thumbs up to the crew at the Dutchmen, I’ve seen their attendance dwindle thru out this season and I’ve heard the bad press they’ve gotten from some. There was even a race I attended earlier this season where I was disturbed by the lack of flaggers on one of their tracks. I know it has been a concern for most of the members there, and they have been asking, what do we need to do? It seems to me that they are taking strides to make their facility better and more desirable for racers and spectators to attend. Every time I go there I see improve-ments of one sort or the other. I know the flagging situation has drastically improved, I’ve seen track changes and increased spectator seating. I see new staff at the mini track and they seem to really care about the kids. I see less pit riding and fewer spectators on the tracks. I know they’ve been hauling dirt in and a new sprinkler system has been added. All these things add up to a better race environment for all. I would like to thank Luke, Tina and the whole crew out at the Dutchmen for making the effort to improve what was already a good thing. I know there can be times when issues arise. I also know that bad news travels quicker than good news, there are also just times when, as things roll on down the lane they can appear to be worse than they actually are. All that MRA asks is that you find out for yourself. If you’re already racing there you know what I mean, if you

haven’t been there for a while, give it another try. I’m sure you’ll be glad you did. Jim Bull MRA

4-8 OI 1st race for our series and he takes 1st place # 263 Walter Bond with # 119 Thorn Devlin hungry for his back tire takin’ 2nd and # 148 Aaron “the Slasher” Lasher kept 3rd in his pocket. Once again you guys showed everyone just what you are made of. Many of you took some bad pile up role jobs and played chicken with the rocks, jumped up, threw the bike back under you, took off for the barrels and when the day was done everyone was hangin out and havin’ fun. GREAT RACIN’ ! KEEP SHOWIN’ EM WHAT THE ECEA KIDS ARE ABOUT!!

Well I must say that I was happy the rain never showed face because we didn’t need a quag-mire in the middle of a bone yard goin’ wide open!! What a heck of a race we had today. I’m glad to report that there were no injuries to the youth other then the normal bumps, bruises and cat brier throat slashes. 140 kids showed up to ged er duuuuuunnn!! It was a tough race for the big kids as well as the lil’ guys. Everyone gave 110% including all the parents & brothers/sisters out there helpin out. Thanks for always pitchin in, that’s what helps keep it safe and enjoyable. We’d really like to thank the OXBO/SPER club for making sure that every Pee Wee rider and over half the youth riders went home with a nice award. Thanks to FAIRWAY, SCOTT USA, SIDI BOOTS & NJORVP for the great give aways!! A special thanks to MCRACINGACTION for the continued coverage. The 2004 Rausch Creek AMA National Hare Scramble came down to the final few feet to determine the winner. After nearly 3 hours of racing along the toughest terrain Rausch Creek could throw at these riders a last minute pass was the determining factor. Barry Hawk and Jason Raines battled along the 11 mile course all afternoon. When the riders were in sight of the finish line Barry Hawk blasted a final attempt to take the lead from Jason Raines. These two

Yamaha teammates gave each other no quarter as they came into the last hundred yards of the final lap. Hawk made the pass stick and they crossed the line Hawk first and Raines sec-ond. Raines ran a great race keeping the pace and running in the lead most of

the way. Hawk had more problems falling a total of three times and rallying back from 6th to take the National victory. This was the first real test for Hawk who was back for his first three-hour national race after an injury sidelined him earlier in the year. The third place rider, Nathan Kanney got a poor start but was able to keep touch with the lead pack early on in the race. Then when the Suzuki rider Doug Blackwell made a mistake Kanney took advantage and climbed his way into a well-deserved 3rd place finish. More at rauschcreekracing.com

When I was a kid growing up in England the monetary system must have been utterly confusing to someone who hadn't grown up with it. One pound consisted of 240 pennies, 12 pennies made one shilling, 2 1/2 shillings made a half crown, one pound and one shilling made a guinea and we had more coins than you could shake a stick at, all the way down to a farthing which was a quarter of a penny. It worked, but a base 12 system is confusing and more complicated than it needed to be. Sometime around 1970 it was revamped into a base 10 system which although not quickly embraced by everyone finally did catch on. The reason I mention this is I want to talk about our equally confusing system of weights and measures and our march toward adopting the metric system.

Granted we are as a nation moving slowly toward adopting the metric system with slow being the operative word. I believe that one day we'll get there, not totally maybe, I think we may cling to MPH for quite a long time but since the rest of the world has accepted or is in the process of accepting it we will follow suit.

As dirt bike enthusiasts we are a little more savvy to the metric system than the aver-age Joe. The most he knows about it is the strange numbers in parentheses after the word quart on his milk container, (.946 L.) We are familiar with our engine displace-ments in Cubic Centimeters, I don't think I've ever heard of anyone with a 125 brag-ging about his 7 and a half cubic inch motor. 125 sounds much more impressive. Our gearbox oil and engine oils are measured out in Cm 3 or ML which stand for Centimemters Cubed and Milliliters which are both CC'ss. All our nuts and bolts are metric. The threads are measured in thread pitch, the distance from one thread to the next rather than TPI threads per inch. Your case bolts are 6 x 1.0, 6 mm thread diam-eter and 1 mm per thread. The next most common is the 8 x 1.25 used in your triple clamp pinch bolts.

A comprehensive decimal system was first proposed way back in 1670 by GabrielMouton, vicar of St. Pauls church in Lyons, France. It's proposed basis would be the length of an arc of one minute of a great circle of the earth. Eventually the meter, the unit of length, was to be one ten millionth part of meridional quadrant of the earth and was the standard through most of the 19th century. In 1960 the meter was redefined by the 11th general conference on Weights and Measures as equal to 1,650,763.73 wavelengths of the orange-red line of krypton 86 under specified conditions. I wonder if Superman was there? Anyway the bottom line is that the meter is the basis of mea-surement in the metric system. All other measurements are based on it as follows

For liquid measure a liter is defined as .001 cubic meters exactly. The same system of names applies. A milliliter is .001 liters, a decaliter is 10 liters and on and on. Next time you need a case of engine oil ask your dealer for a decaliter of Silkolene Comp 4 and see if his eyes glaze over. Anyone notice that a lot of the oil suppliers are now selling oil in Liter bottles? Oh and let me get a little political, the next thing will be the oil companies re-doing the gas pumps to sell us gas by the liter. Most people will think things are getting better when they see the signs at their local station saying 80 cents for 93 octane when actually it works out to over $3.00 a gallon. Thank you Mr. Bush.

There are many times in the course of a day that I am forced to convert from one system to another, mostly when boring cylinders since my calipers are graduated in inches and my bore gauge in millimeters so having a good grasp on this is essential. Following are some conversion values that everyone should know.1 inch = 25.4 mm or 2.54 cm

To convert from inches to millimeters multiply by 25.4, for example 12" of rear wheel travel is actually 304.8 mm, doesn't that sound more impressive? Come to think of it there are some things better measured in mm because it sounds more impressive, think about it everything sounds bigger and when weighed the metric system makes things sound lighter as well. Your 200 lb. YZ125 weighs just over 90 kilos, wow thats a featherweight

With everyone talking about big boring their cylinders I'll pass along the formula for calculating engine displacement, there are several formulas but I've been most accus-tomed to the following... (Im just trying to fill space here so this article has at least a modicum of length)

Pi x bore radius squared in Cm x stroke in Cm. So in a 125 motor we have a bore and stroke of 54 mm x 54 mm so the formula would read...

3.1415926 (Pi) x 2.7 squared (half 54mm is 27mm which is 2.7 Cm) x 5.4(stroke in Cm) = 123.something CC Believe me when I say that it is easier to calculate this in millimeters than in inches.

Doublin Gap mx – D-6 Points/D-7 expert Points August 15,

2004 Ephrata Cycle and Sports was your sponsor for the day at the combo D-6 and D-7 Expert points race held at the Doublin Gap MX Park. They offered holeshot awards in each class and hats and caps were given to the top three riders in each division. The weather was bright and sunny for the large crowd that had assembled from both districts 6 and 7 to compete for the championship points that were being offered on the day. The A classes had great rider turnouts in anticipation of the district points that were available. Only two men would prove victorious out of the five classes being offered for experts. District 6 rider Jeremy Cook would win 6 motos to sweep the 125A, 250A and 4 Stroke A divisions. District 7 veteran Jeff Grove would go on to sweep the 25 plus A and 30 Plus A battles. Ryan Zimmerman from Narvon, PA made his return after an early season injury in the highly competitive school boy division. Zimmerman was getting his wheels back under himself in the first moto finishing up 9th while coming back strong in the second moto for the win capturing 3rd overall. Matt Hougentogler grabbed the top podium spot followed by Wayne Powell III. In the college boy group, Michael Foor from Chambersburg, PA took the top spot followed by Joe Farnish Jr. and Michael Reynolds Jr. Thomas Nagle was the big winner in both the Vet B and Senior B classes. Winners in the mini ranks included the likes of Seibold, Kramer, Clemens and Villareal. And in the 50 divisions the names Barto and Blettner keep popping up around the region, watch out for those two youngsters in the future. Have you been to a national competition lately? If you have then you know, it’s incredible how fast all these guys are going and yet Ricky Carmichael and Bubba Stewart are still running away from them. It has gotten to the point where you are really there to see who comes in second and which riders will be in the top ten. Even being in the top ten doesn’t guarantee the leader hasn’t lapped you. It is crazy watching Ricky and Bubba tear up the competition. Now I know everyone who has thrown a leg over the seat wishes they could go that fast but there is a difference between those two and the rest of us mere mortals. They were born with something special. A combination of balance, hand and eye coordina-tion, cat like reflex, and a huge “what ever it takes will to win” attitude. Along with all this natural talent they also have focus. This focus pushes them. It is what allows them to go the 110% when they need to. This focus and great work ethic is what separates them from the pack. Natural talent alone will not always put you on the top (of course it helps). It is the dedication and hard work that gets and keeps you there.A lot of times the natural is not willing to go the extra effort because things have always come so easily for them. They don’t really understand the need to dig deep inside to go that extra lap or mile. They want to rely on their natural talent to get them by and when that is not enough they need that hard work ethic and deep desire to win to help push them. Remember Ricky’s first season on the 250? Remember how many times he hit the ground and yet he still got up and pushed 100%. He has the hard work ethic and that deep desire. This is why he is winning today over and over. And like Jeremy McGrath, once Ricky loses the desire to win he will also retire with the respect of his competition.Another example of a natural is Travis Pastrana. He came out and ran up front at Daytona after being out of the race scene for over a year and a half. You want to talk about natural speed! Unfortunately his body ran out of gas due to lack of endurance. Travis’ focus has always been “fun”. If he is not having fun his heart and most importantly his head is not in it. His first year on the 250 he trained harder than he ever had and yet he crashed and got hurt over and over again. Travis was not having fun. He lost focus or should I say changed his focus. He knew that 75-foot jumps with a “Wilma” or double heel clicker, or a back flip and throw in a “no hander” landing were fun. I am not saying that making the kind of money he is to jump your bike is a mistake but I really wish he would regain his racing focus and come back for another race season.This is what I am talking about – having the focus to follow through to win and never give up. I have worked with both types of athletes the natural and the hard worker. When I took the USA Cycling Team to the Junior World Championships last year in Moscow, Russia there were two guys on the team one a natural and the other a hard worker. Both were in their first of two years as juniors. The natural finished in the top five, while the hard worker ended up 15th. The natural spent his winter training a little harder than before figuring that would be enough to put him in the top three. The hard worker on the other hand set a goal and really focused on what he needed to do to reach it. At this year’s Junior World Championships in California the natural didn’t even make it to the finals and the hard worker ended up with a close second place. It was nice to see how that deep desire to win pushed the hard worker past the natural in competition.I would always rather work with a hard worker with some talent then a natural that does not think he needs to work. Of course you can’t beat the naturals like Ricky and Bubba with determined focus and the deep desire to win. Remember we only go around once in life so set your goals and go for them while you can. Push yourself to the limit. Go that extra lap or mile while you are out training. When you do you may surprise yourself. Always give this great sport 100% every time you are out there racing. - Bob Schuler

D-6 pointsaugust 22, 2004

Action Motorsports in York, PA sponsored the 4 foot trophies at round 13 of the D-6 Championship Points Series at the Happy Ramblers Motorcycle Club. What a beautiful day for racing, with temperatures in the 70’s and a great crowd on hand including recently crowned National Champion, Jason Lawrence. It was an event not to be missed. The action started off in the 250 C division with Gary Gallagher Jr., currently in third place in the points standings on hand to try and better his position. The number 1 and 2 point holders were vacant on this day opening up an opportunity for Gary to catch up. Gallagher put in a solid 4th place finish on the day on an unfamiliar track while suffering from arm pump. Great job Gary. Next off the gate was the 25 plus A division, this along with the Vet A race would prove to be some of the best racing of the day. In both divisions Jimmy Mcilvaine took the early leads and the race was on with Jeff Yentzer and Jeff Grove in tow. The three would battle thru out the day, swapping positions on the long 6 lap motos that Ramblers provided in all classes. Yentzer was the man of the day in the end, he was able to sweep all 4 motos for the overalls. In the 65cc divisions, Kameron Page was the victor in the 7-9 group with Steven Sparks taking the 10-11 win. In moto number one Page, starting on the second split gate was able to catch and pass all of the 10-11 year old riders while lapping everyone but Sparks in moto number two. In super mini racing action it was the Spangler and Kaminskie show, boy can these guys fly. In the end it was Kaminskie edging out Spangler for the win. These two would go at it again in the school boy division, only this time Kaminskie would be on the bigger bike with Spangler competing on the 85cc machine. Kaminski would again take the win with Spangler ending up in third against the mostly larger machines. In 50cc action, Dustin Miller would take the 4-6 checkers with Bobby Kinsley coming out on top in the 7-8 division. In the oil injected classes, Wyatt Barto won the 4-6 group with Dylan Blettner grabbing the win in 7-8. The guy to watch on this day was # 38 J.L.. Lawrence competed in three divisions winning all six of his motos convincingly. He domi-nated both the college boy and 125 B races. In the first moto of the 250 B race he got outside in the first turn and got sucked into the soft stuff and went down. Lawrence remounted and charged, by lap number three he had caught and passed everyone in his division and to the end of the moto he had picked off several of the expert racers. In moto number two, Lawrence got a good start and cruised to the victory again. Jim Bull MRA
