Message From Our Co-Chairs Marlene Varga, Melissa Crozier, Karen Napier
In partnership with members of Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health acknowledges
the importance of providing continuous education opportunities for team members in the
area of skin and wound care.
Our goal is to improve skin and wound care practice across the continuum of care within
the organization and beyond and to lead in areas of skin safety, patient and family
centered care and pressure injury prevention. We recognize that we have the opportunity
to shape wound care practice by raising awareness of the extent of the problem of chronic
wounds, by supporting the uptake of the best available evidence to manage them and to
support education, knowledge translation and mobilization to prevent wounds from
developing. We are committed to developing wound care leaders to support a ripple effect
throughout our programs. It has been rewarding for us to collaborate together to bring you
this conference today. Please take this opportunity to engage with participants, speakers
and our sponsors.
Message From Our Senior Leadership Team Lana Chivers, Senior Director Operations, Grey Nuns Community Hospital
Covenant Health is moving forward to develop the structure and mechanisms of care
delivery that are needed in the area of skin and wound care. At Covenant Health we
recognize that a holistic approach is our priority in caring for persons with wounds along
with engaging their social support systems. Our focus is on quality, safe patient care and
patient centered care. It is our role to advocate for patients in order to practice true
collaboration and ensure that we focus on outcomes of relevance to patients and not just
on outcomes of relevance to the healthcare system. Our commitment is to involve, enlist
and engage our patients, families and systems in prevention strategies and wound
management. Join us as we build capacity, advocate for resources and collaborate
together to improve the care of those with wounds and those who care for wounds.
Covenant Health welcomes you to our annual wound care conference.

There is little doubt that the depictions of illness, disease, and caring found in fiction,
poetry, drawing, drama, film, paintings, sculpture, photo voice (taking pictures of health
resources) storytelling and narratives are far more powerful than the explanations
contained in standard textbooks. Storytelling and visual art are powerful, ancient means
of embodying and reinforcing ‘socially shared significances’ that can cut across age,
culture, language, dance, music, literacy, and gender barriers. Independently and together,
storytelling and visual art have the potential to create shared, embodied understandings
through imparting knowledge.
One mechanism through which they may work is by attracting
and sustaining interest, and engaging recipients in making
meaningful connections. Storytelling and visual art have not been
utilized to their full potential in the healthcare environment,
however there is increasing interest in their power to motivate,
communicate, heal and engage with multiple audiences.
Storytellers speak about successes and challenges and about the
forces that limit their agency as they envision and seek to create a better and different
future. Arts and literature provide a powerful focus for transformative learning
experiences. By their very nature they are imbued with possibilities for gathering us
around them and for multiple interpretations. They also evoke the kind of discussion and
dialogue which allows participants to dwell learningly in ways which call forth new ways of
thinking.
Please email [email protected] to share your submission to be presented
at the conference. You will be eligible to win a prize but more importantly, you will be able
to share your story in the area of skin and wound care.
Entries must be accompanied by an artist bio (maximum 50 words and an artist statement
(maximum 200 words). The art piece should be set up for display by the artist on September
8th, 2016 prior to the start of the conference.
Artist Statement
A general introduction to your work, a body of work, or a specific project.
It should open with the work’s basic ideas in an overview of two or three sentences or a short
paragraph.
The second paragraph should go into detail about how these issues or ideas are presented in the
work.
The final paragraph should recapitulate the most important points in the statement
