OUR LADY OF DIVINE PROVIDENCE

Devotion to Our Lady of Divine Providence originated in Italy in the thirteenth century, and was carried to Puerto Rico in the 1850s by Bishop Gil Esteve Tomás. The original statue at the cathedral there was even-tually replaced by a wooden carving in 1920 that has become the most familiar image of the patroness of Puerto Rico.

Living Stewardship Now Read the biography of a saint—Saint Therese autobiography, Story of a Soul, is only one exam-ple—and see what you can imitate to be a better disciple of the Lord.

The Little Way In a life of only twenty-four years, cut short by tuberculosis, Saint Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face—often known as The Little Flower—showed us a life of dedicated discipleship that any of us can imitate. From the age of 15 she lived in the obscurity of a convent in Lisieux, in northern France, communicating the unfolding of her spiritual life in a series of short books and let-ters. Her writing is in the style of her times, and some have dismissed it as cloying and sentimen-tal. Yet she blazed with such love that she has in-fluenced thousands in the century since her death. Therese focused on what she called “the little way,” a manner of serving God by a persistent en-deavor in the details of everyday life. This in-cluded the difficult task of accepting all work that came her way and attempting to love the commu-nity of her sisters in religious life. That was no easier for her as a cloistered nun than it is for us in our families, communities, and workplaces. She experienced times where she could not pray and suffered greatly as her illness progressed. Yet she persevered in this “little way” to such an extent that, in an unusually short time after her death, she was canonized and then declared a doctor of the Church, the youngest of only thirty-three saints ever given that title and only one of three women—the others are Saint Teresa of Ávila and Saint Catherine of Siena. Most importantly, espe-cially in the light of today’s scripture readings, Saint Therese al-ways had a firm hope of heaven and saw it as a seam-less transition from the pilgrim-age of faith here on earth. She even said, “I will spend my heaven doing good on earth.”

El Camino de la Sencillez Una vida de tan sólo veinticuatro años, acortada por la tuberculosis, fue la de santa Teresa del Ni-ño Jesús y de la Santa Faz, a menudo conocida también como la pequeña flor. A pesar de su corto tiempo en la tierra, ella nos muestra una vida de-dicada al discipulado, que todos podemos imitar. Desde la edad de 15 años Teresita, como le llaman cariñosamente los de habla hispana, vivió dentro de la oscuridad de un convento en Lisieux, al nor-te de Francia donde escribió poemas, cartas y es-critos varios, además de su autobiografía. A través de ellos fue revelando el desarrollo de su vida es-piritual. Sus escritos tienen el estilo de su época y algunos los han desestimado por considerarlos empalagosos y sentimentales. Sin embargo, su co-razón ardía con tanto amor que ha influido en mi-llares de personas en el transcurso de los siglos desde su muerte. Teresita se entregó a lo que ella llamó “el camino de la sencillez”, una manera de servir a Dios esforzándose con persistencia en los detalles de la vida cotidiana. Esos esfuerzos inclu-ían la difícil tarea de aceptar todos los trabajos que le daban y tratar siempre de amar a todas las hermanas de su comunidad religiosa. Eso no fue más fácil para ella como monja enclaustrada que para nosotros dentro de nuestras familias, comu-nidades y centros de trabajo. Hubo momentos en que no podía rezar y sufría muchísimo a medida que avanzaba su enfermedad. Así y todo perseveró en su “camino de la sencillez” a tal extremo que fue canonizada en un tiempo excepcionalmente corto después de su muerte y más tarde declarada doctora de la Iglesia, la más joven de los treinta y tres santos a quienes se les ha conferido ese título. Sólo tres son mujeres, santa Teresita del Niño Jesús, santa Teresa de Jesús (o de Ávila) y santa Catalina de Siena. Lo aún más importante, sobre todo a la luz de las lecturas de hoy, es que santa Teresita siempre mantuvo una esperanza firme en el cielo y vio la vida eterna como una transición ininterrumpida desde nuestra peregrinación de fe aquí en la tierra. Por eso se expresó así: “Pasaré mi cielo haciendo el bien en la tierra”.

The John Paul II International Film Festival is coming back to Miami! After a successful inau-gural year in 2009, the inter-faith film festival modeled after the ideals of the late John Paul II, is in preparation for the festival’s upcoming sec-ond edition, “The Mystery of Love.” In preparation for this second year, taking place in February, 2011, the festival will host two special screenings of its 2009 Opening and Closing Night Films: “The Mighty Macs” and “The Human Experience.” Join us for the much-demanded screenings on Decem-ber 3rd and 17th, 2010 at 8pm over at FIU’s Mo-desto Maidique Campus’ College of Law, RBD1100, and stay after to meet the “Mighty Macs” director, Tim Chambers, and “Human Ex-perience” producer, Joe Campo.
