SECOND SUNDAY OF ADVENT December 5, 2010

The earth shall be filled with knowledge of the LORD, as water covers the sea. — Isaiah 11:9

THE LONG-AWAITED ONE

As the Sundays of Advent unfold the scriptures shift focus from the final coming of the Lord to his his-torical birth. Today’s scriptures blend the two. Isaiah’s disillusionment with the kings of his own day led him to envision an ideal king who would rule with divine approval and be led by divine wisdom. For centuries the Jewish people anticipated the arrival of that Mes-siah, who would usher in a blessed age when the whole world would finally dwell in justice and peace. After centuries of such growing expectation, the preaching of John the Baptist about the imminent arrival of the Messiah could not help but provoke in-tense interest. The Baptist’s message about prepara-tion for “the one who is coming” (Matthew 3:11) makes clear that Jesus is, in fact, the long-awaited one who is ushering in the new age foretold by Isaiah and all the prophets.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — He shall bring justice for the afflicted; the earth shall overflow with the knowledge of the LORD (Isaiah 11:1-10). Psalm — Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever (Psalm 72). Second Reading — Glorify God by living in harmony with one another, welcoming each other as Christ wel-comed you (Romans 15:4-9). Gospel — Produce good fruit worthy of your baptism; repent, for the reign of God is near (Matthew 3:1-12).

Watching for Christ’s Coming

In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas. Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation for the future. Memory meets action. In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disci-ples, “Never forget what I did for you.” Instead, he said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” He calls us to remem-ber by doing, to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is as present in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for there, “celebration is wholly communion and feast” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly participate in the heavenly liturgy. The Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven.

LECTURAS DE HOY Primera lectura — Brotará un retoño del tronco de Jesé. Juzgará a los pobres con justicia, y herirá al vio-lento con el látigo de su boca (Isaías 11:1-10). Salmo — Que en sus días florezca la justicia y la paz abunde eternamente (Salmo 72 [71]). Segunda lectura — Vivan en perfecta armonía unos con otros. Por lo tanto, acójanse los unos a los otros co-mo Cristo los acogió a ustedes, tanto circuncidados co-mo gentiles (Romanos 15:4-9). Evangelio — Juan Bautista predica, “Arrepiéntanse, porque el reino de los cielos está cerca” (Mateo 3:1-12).

LARGA ESPERA

A medida que transcurren los domingos de Ad-viento el foco de las lecturas cambia de la venida final del Señor a su histórico nacimiento. Las lecturas de hoy mezclan ambos. Isaías, desilusionado de los reyes de sus tiempos, imagina al rey ideal que gobernará con la aprobación de Dios y será guiado por la divina sabi-duría. Por siglos el pueblo judío anticipó la llegada de ese Mesías, quien inauguraría una era de gracia cuan-do todo el mundo finalmente viviría en justicia y paz. Luego de siglos de creciente expectativa, la pre-dicación de Juan Bautista sobre la inminente llegada del Mesías no hizo más que provocar un intenso in-terés. El mensaje del Bautista sobre “el que vie-ne” (Mateo 3:11) deja claro que Jesús, de hecho, es aquel esperado por largo tiempo que inaugura la nueva era predicha por Isaías y todos los profetas.

FIESTA DE LA FE El saludo litúrgico

Uno de los grandes aportes del Concilio Vatica-no II fue el reconocimiento de la presencia de Cristo no sólo en las especies eucarísticas del pan y el vino consa-grados, sino también, en la asamblea de creyentes. Es-ta afirmación crea ya un cambio de enfoque y de acti-tud hacia quien por cuatro siglos había sido espectado-ra en la celebración litúrgica. Hubo un gran cambio, no sólo de la contemplación del misterio a la celebración gozosa del mismo misterio, sino en el pensamiento mis-mo de la Iglesia respecto a sí misma como pueblo de Dios y no sólo como orden jerárquico. Por tal razón, el presbítero, quien preside nuestra liturgia y celebra con todos nosotros, nos saluda con “El Señor esté con uste-des”. Este es un saludo litúrgico que lleva en sí mismo un gran peso teológico: Él reconoce en el pueblo de Dios la presencia de Cristo y saluda esa presencia. La reco-noce. La honra. El pueblo mismo, en respuesta, reafir-mando la presencia de Cristo en él, responde: “Y con tu espíritu”. Es decir, también en ti está Cristo presente y saludamos esa presencia en tu ministerio sacerdotal, así como tú saludas y celebras esa presencia en noso-tros, la Iglesia, pueblo de Dios.

The Sound of Stillness

There is so much busyness at this time of year, so much noise. Can you hear the voice over the racket? John the Baptist, in today’s Gospel read-ing, says we must change ourselves. A great light is going to appear that will expose our sinfulness and burn up in fire what we cannot hide. We can-not afford to be complacent and think we are do-ing fine as we are. Change is a great idea, you think, but how do I do that? Sixteen hundred years ago a young man grew up in what is now Algeria, on the north coast of Africa. He was the child of a Christian mother and a pagan father. They gave him an excellent education, but as a youth he fell in with a sect called the Manichees, who encouraged sexual promiscuity, drunkenness, and many other vices. In his autobiography he tells us that he reached a point in his life when he had no beliefs and neither the prayers of his mother nor the urgings of his best friend to be-come a Christian seemed to have any effect. He prayed to God to change him, “but not yet.” Fi-nally, he stopped and realized his own limited ability, his emptiness and his powerlessness. He could do nothing through his own efforts. At that point he was quiet enough to hear the “still small voice.” God said, “Take up and read,” and the scriptures fell open to a passage in the Letter to the Romans (13:13–14). His heart was changed. His name is Augustine and he became a bishop, a great Christian theolo-gian, a doctor of the Church. Ad-vent is a time to slow down, to be quieter, and to listen more carefully, or we might miss the personal message that God has for us.

Un Mensaje en la Quietud

En este tiempo del año hay demasiadas ocupacio-nes y demasiado ruido. ¿Cómo poder escuchar una voz en medio de tanta bulla? Juan el Bautista nos dice en el Evangelio de hoy que debemos cambiar. Una gran luz aparecerá que expondrá nuestros pecados y lo que no dé fruto será arrojado al fuego. No podemos darnos el lujo de sentirnos auto-satisfechos y pensar que todo lo estamos haciendo de maravilla. Cambiar es muy buena idea pero, ¿cómo puedo hacerlo? Hace mil seiscientos años un joven creció en un lugar de la costa norte de África, que hoy es Argelia, era hijo de una madre cristiana y de un padre pagano. Recibió una edu-cación excelente, pero de muy joven cayó en las redes de los maniqueos quienes lo animaban a practicar la promiscuidad sexual, a beber en exce-so y otros muchos vicios. En su autobiografía nos dice que llegó a un punto en su vida en que no cre-ía en nada y ni las oraciones de su madre ni las insistencias de sus mejores amigos parecían tener efecto. Le pidió a Dios que lo cambiara, pero “todavía no”. Finalmente cayó en cuenta de sus limitadas habilidades, de su vacío interior y de su incapacidad. No podía hacer nada por sus propios esfuerzos. En ese momento de su vida, pudo en-trar en una quietud que le permitió escuchar una voz “como la de un niño” que le decía, “toma y lee”

y al abrir la Biblia se encontró con el pasaje de la carta de san Pablo a los romanos (13:13–14). Su corazón cambió. Su nombre es Agustín. Llegó a ser obispo, un gran teólogo cristiano y doctor de la Iglesia. El Adviento es un tiempo para amino-rar nuestra velocidad, para buscar la quietud y escuchar más atenta-mente. De lo contrario, podríamos perdernos el mensaje que Dios tie-ne para nosotros.

Queridos Feligreses, La Corresponsabilidad nunca termina. Es un continuo caminar. Muchos de ustedes devolvieron sus tarjetas de compromiso de ofrenda semanal. Realmente en Madre de Nuestro Redentor somos bendecidos con esta gran cantidad de feligreses maravillosos. Yo les doy las gracias y le pido al Señor que les bendiga a ustedes y a sus familias por su continuo sacrificio. La respuesta de alguno de ustedes al llamado del Señor es realmente hermosa. Recibimos más de 600 tarjetas con su compromiso financiero. El coraje y compromiso demostrado por nuestros feligreses al llenar sus tarjetas de compromiso de ofrenda semanal fue fabuloso. Yo estoy muy animado de ver como más y más familias están entendiendo la Corresponsabilidad como “Un Estilo de Vida”. Nuestra Parroquia crece continuamente, y estos ofrecimientos de tesoro son de una gran ayuda para presupuestar nuestras finanzas. Dear Parishioners, Stewardship is never over. It is an ongoing event. Many parishioners have returned their weekly offering pledge cards. We are blessed in-deed by so many wonderful parishioners. I thank you and ask the Lord to bless you and your families for your continued sacrifice. The response of our people to the Lord’s call is truly beautiful. We received over 600 pledge cards with your financial commitment. The courage and commitment demonstrated by people filling their weekly offering pledges was marvelous. I am encouraged to see more and more families coming to understand Steward-ship as “A Way of Life”.
