Got Ethics?If you think ethics aremissing from thedecision-making processin business, governmentand other arenas, Foothilloffers you theopportunity to studymoral standards and howthey affect professional conduct in the four-unit BUSI 70:Professional & Business Ethics course.

“With corporate ethics continuing to be a hot topic intoday’s world, students often ask how we teach business andprofessional ethics at Foothill College,” says Foothill Business,Accounting & Law Instructor Sid Davidson, Ed.D., who teachesthe class. “We start with great respect for how families haveinstilled theirs sons and daughters with a strong sense ofethics. So, our role is not to ‘teach’ students about what isethical; our role is to provide them with the tools to makechoices, using an ethical framework for decision-making.”

By focusing on the social and moral dilemmas encounteredin business and industry in 2008, the class will analyze theongoing conflicts between personal value systems, expectedcodes of behavior, and standard operating procedures in theworkplace. Special attention will be given to an examination ofthe major philosophical schools of ethics, and how theirspecific theories may be applied to concrete business casesand contemporary management issues. Author Will Perform One-Night-Only

Brian Copeland’s Not a GenuineBlack Man on StageFoothill College presents a one-night-only performance of Nota Genuine Black Man, the critically acclaimed one-man showfeaturing Bay Area author,comedian and commentatorBrian Copeland Friday, Jan. 9, at 7 p.m. in the SmithwickTheatre at Foothill College. A book signing andcomplimentary reception follow the performance.

After a smash run off-Broadway, Copeland’s Not aGenuine Black Man holds therecord for the longest runningsolo show in San Franciscohistory. Based on the 2006 bookof the same name, the show deals with the lingering effects ofCopeland’s childhood spent as an African American in the thenwhite Bay Area suburb of San Leandro. The show’s themes ofisolation, racial identity and redemption strike a central nervein audiences.

The San Francisco Chronicle called Not a Genuine BlackMan, “...a beautiful mix of wry humor and heartbreak,indignation and inspiration, a singular story of extremeisolation that speaks to anyone who’s ever felt out of place.”

More Child Development ClassesFoothill’s Child Development Program continues its popularity. The program is idealfor current teachers looking to advance in their profession as well as studentspursuing child development as their first career. This winter, Foothill offers severalchild development courses, including CHLD 82: Planning Creative Dramatics, CHLD68: Professional Growth Opportunities for Leaders and CHLD 190X: Early ChildhoodLeaders Workshop Series.

The one-unit CHLD 82 course gives you an introduction to creative dramaticsfor the child, including how to implement techniques such as dramatic play,puppetry, role playing and acting out stories. You’ll learn techniques for promotingchildren's sensitivity to and use of various dramatic art forms, and discuss the roleof the parent and teacher in facilitating children's explorations.
