The Chemin La Vie Center Orphanage will support
abused street children who have run away from
their homes. The goal of the center is to help
these children become productive members of
society by placing them in a supportive, nurtur-
ing environment where they are well cared for
and have the opportunity to engage in everyday
activities typical of children there age. The center
does not offer formal schooling, but teaches the
children life skills that will help them be successful
adults. The design for the center was gener-
ated by the idea of a mother’s loving protective
embrace.

Nicholas School is a series of single and dual
room classrooms outside of Mirebalais Haiti. As
one of our most rural projects, it posed a great
challenge for our construction techniques and for
the builders. The land for this project was donated
by the mayor of a small village that has never had
a school building. The children of this village
have had to walk for miles to school through the
mountains of Haiti.

L’Ecole de Choix is a campus in Mirebalais
Haiti. The campus is made up of classrooms of
50 square meters, designed and arranged into
clusters of three classroom units. The Classroom
units are then composed on the hillside site in an
informal manner mimicking the nearby villages
in both spatial character and social informality.
The buildings are constructed of cast-in-place
concrete with infill CMU units. The richness of the
project is derived from simplicity, and the informal-
ity used to create interstitial gathering and teach-
ing spaces between buildings, while urbanizing
an otherwise rural site.

THE VILLAGE
An informal game was created using A MIRROR, A TWIST and A NUDGE to create interesting and accidental rela-tionships not unlike the vil lages that surround the school. Then sectional influences were introduced in to the site and building placement

The University Hospital Eye Clinic is a proposal
to replace an existing facility that has been in its
present location for many years, but due to dam-
age from the earthquake of 2010 can no longer
serve the community. The waiting area is impos-
sible to navigate; diminished spatial capacity and
increased services are putting a significant level of
strain on the staff. The new facility will provide the
international staff the proper environment within
which they can conduct their work with profes-
sionalism.

UNEPH Media Lab
Project Brief
The UNEPH Media Lab is typical of many of the
projects we are undertaking in Haiti where the
application of a formal solution can solve an
otherwise insurmountable brief. This Media Lab
was to be designed for the roof of an existing
teaching facility on the UNEPH campus in down-
town Port-au-Prince. We were able to convince
the client that a typical and heavy concrete block
solution would not work and that our light-weight
and strong metal stick system would be the ideal
solution. The Media Lab is to house teaching
and communication facilities for long distance
learning.
