As a provider of professional qualifications and CPD opportunities itrsquos DPGrsquos responsibility to keep up to date with current trends in HR LampD and Leadership and Management With thousands of professionals at our finger tips via the DPG community we are able to ask questions and get to the bottom of some of the burning questions we have gaining real insight into the current sector We combine what our community have to say with research from experts in the field to bring the Spotlight series to life This month we have focused on

bull Organisations using gamification in online and face to face training

bull Cloud-based HR systems

bull Management qualifications and apprenticeships

bull Employee Engagement Vs Employee Experience

The DPG communityThe DPG community was created in 2012 to support our learners completing professional qualifications by providing them with relevant information articles and blogs that they could use for their CPD throughout Since its outset the DPG community has evolved and adapted to fit learners needs and has now opened its doors to any HR LampD or Leadership professional enabling a huge range of people to share thoughts connect with others in the industry and develop themselves in any way they need This makes it the perfect platform for gathering real data and responses for our research

Introduction This spotlight has been broken down into sections from the 4 main headings We have combined research from experts in the field with what our community members currently believe to explore each topic thoroughly and give a balanced report that you can use for current information to develop your organisations or just to support with your CPD

Does your organisation use gamification throughout its learning

ldquoGamification (Deterding et al 2011) is the use of game-play mechanics for non-game applications Any application task process or context can theoretically be gamified Gamificationrsquos main goal is to rise the engagement of users by using game-like techniques such as scoreboards and personalized fast feedback (Flatla et al 2011) making people feel more ownership and purpose when engaging with tasks (Pavlus 2010)rdquo

Gamification in learning is not a new concept in the world of LampD however it is still always a talking point amongst professionals in the industry The main purpose of games are to entertain therefore the action of taking the leisure activity of gaming into the education sector brought new levels of entertainment and engagement into learning

There are many methods of gamification that are commonly used in the online areas of learning Things such as quizzes and leader boards are a frequent feature on many LMS platforms encouraging learners to have friendly competition between one another Some advanced e-learning features include board-game like activities or real life scenarios for the learner to ldquoplayrdquo in and learn from their mistakes

In the face to face arena gamification can be found in activities such as buzzword bingo or problem solving against the clock Learners can compete against other individuals other teams within the classroom or the facilitator of the activity adding an element of competition to the activity

While gamification is a great topic of interest in LampD 43 of community members asked claimed their organisation only use gamification in online learning and 57 say their organisation donrsquot use gamification at all in any of their learning activities

As with all learning activities there are many pros and cons to using gamification Studies suggest that students in higher education are more likely to spend time playing learning based games if there is some form of reward system in place (whether that be a leader board or a badge) leading to increased engagement and therefore a rise in learning retention

As well as this most gamified learning activities provide instant feedback for the learner This information can push the learner to try the activity again in order to achieve a higher score or gain more rewards therefore motivating the learner to engage with the learning again

On the other hand it was suggested by Gartner in 2014 that 80 of gamified applications will fail to meet business objectives due to poor design suggesting that gamification is a novelty or a hype rather than a recommended learning technique The cost of gamified learning can also be quite significant depending on the system costs or training costs for the facilitators thus making many organisations hesitate to create gamified learning

With HR moving more digital do you currently use cloud based HR in your organisationWith developments in technology forever adapting the way we work HR is now expected to keep up with the ever-changing digital workforce Deloitte reported in the 2016 Global Human Capital Trends report that HR has made significant progress in many aspects over recent years including the adoption of cloud-based technology

ldquoCloud computing promises benefits in numerous functional areas but in few has the impact been felt as keenly as in human resources Particularly for core ldquoback officerdquo HR areas such as benefits time and attendance and systems of record decades spent using -- and customizing -- on-premises software have created considerable inertiardquo says Katherine Noyes (Senior US Correspondent IDG News Service)

With more organisations taking advantage of cloud based technologies itrsquos interesting to see the benefits it has

We asked the DPG Community if they currently use cloud based HR in their organisations and a staggering 87 voted no they do not However seeing the opportunities available with cloud-based systems it would be surprising if this percentage does not reduce dramatically over the coming years

Improved security measuresldquoAccording to the data provided by the Ponemon Institute more than 50 of Fortune 1000 firms experience a data breach at least once a year losing anywhere between 1000 and 100000 confidential files in the process including those of employeesrdquo Says Nate Vickery for HR Zone Cloud-based software reduces the amount of paperwork needed for the HR department meaning that organisations are able to protect themselves from data breaches

Simple user experienceCloud-based systems allow organisations to change standards rules and communications easily and in line with HR guidelines These systems allow organisations to differentiate departments geographical locations and types of working meaning the correct guidelines can be delivered easily to the correct people

Cost-effectivenessMany cloud-based systems are on a pay-as-you-go subscription which makes the option very affordable for many organisations Implementation of a cloud-based system is much easier and requires no IT team to install or monitor the functionality reducing costs in technical support

Does your organisation value an ILM Management Apprenticeships

The Apprenticeship Levy will have a huge impact on many organisations in the coming years and with new apprenticeships appearing from new providers itrsquos difficult to make the choice on where to spend the Levy money and where organisations will gain the most value

Organisations tend to be very divided on management qualifications and because of this they may not be seen as the most valuable training to invest in ILM report ldquoPoor people management is hitting the efficiency of UK businesses by an average of 8 costing UK PLC pound84bn a year Thatrsquos a huge loss to the UK economy and one that can be addressed by developing better leadership skills at all levels of the organisationrdquo Therefore creating many reasons why organisations should invest more in management training

1 An employeersquos relationship with his or her manager is the most important factor of employee engagement after all it is said that employees leave their managers not their organisations Employees who have good relationships with their managers tend to be happier and therefore more productive

2 Every manager is different this much has always been true however this does not mean that anyone can be a manager A manager must be able to set clear objectives be able to structure a performance related meeting be able to be personable give constructive criticism and have good communication skills all of which are teachable which is why organisations must be able to get this right

3 Respected and well-trained managers across the organisation boost morale in the workplace morale then boosts retention Retention of good employees allows organisations to develop their own leaders and managers from within meaning great managers can coach and mentor new great managers

The Apprenticeship Levy will allow organisations to reap the benefits of management skills such as giving feedback supporting teams problem solving agreeing budgets strategic decision making amongst many more under a range of different apprenticeship levels

10 11

We talk a lot about employee engagement in our industry but is this where we should be focusing our attention or should we be looking more at employee experience Do we even know the difference between employee engagement and employee experience

The CIPD describes employee engagement as ldquorelatively new and broad concept closely related to motivation which gives a useful focus for people management strategyrdquo Concepts of employee engagement originate from theories from Herzberg and Maslow regarding motivation in the workplace With employee engagement being such a popular topic in HR for the past decade itrsquos no surprise there are thousands of employee engagement programmes available to organisations from leisure perks to casual Friday and yoga studios in the office We have a huge range of engagement activities available

Employee experience is defined as ldquothe sum of the various perceptions employees have about their interactions with the organisations in which they workrdquo meaning the experience isnrsquot down to perks or employee satisfaction but about how the organisation is viewed by those who work there based on each experience no matter how big or small Itrsquos about the everyday life within the organisation According to Jacob Morgan ldquoFrom the perspective of the organization employee experience is what is designed and created for employees or what the organization believes the employee reality should be likerdquo

So where should we be focusing our attention Employee engagement or employee experience Or a mixture of both Research by Jacob Morgan suggests that a mixture of the two will gain the best results for both employees and the employers as organisations can create an environment where individuals really feel valued A recent PwC study showed that employees who are committed to their organisation are said to put 57 more effort on the job
