The traditional ‘test’ is a measure of how much knowledge students remember of the material being studied. An essay will help analyse if they understand that knowledge. Students have chosen a real world issue that is important to them, studied it and are coming up with some action that can be done to “fix” it. Effective assessment has a purpose and is not just a mark or grade. It is an indication of progress towards a goal. This is the style of assessment that is used here at SBB as we conduct “inquiry based learning”. In this semesters report, we will be measuring your child’s progress towards achieving a number of goals. These goals are expected to be achieved and or mastered by the end of the year , but for now most students will be working towards achieving their goals. Exams — are they worth the stress? As we distribute our end of Semester reports, I reflect on an interesting article that raised the question, is the stress caused by final exams worth it?

In todays world, it seems like getting a good mark is the only thing that can safeguard a students future that they envision for themselves. But, is this true? We all want our child to be in the top, but is this possible? Research tells us that the most powerful learning is driven by our own needs, by the questions that we ask ourselves. If we want to make something with our own hands, but it doesn't work, we have to revisit what we did, identify the problem and again try and fix it. Learning is a cycle that goes on and on, and assessment is the tool we use to improve.

There is a place for exams. The traditional ‘test’ is a measure of how much knowledge students remember of the material being studied. An essay will help analyse if they understand that knowledge. But how do we measure whether a student can apply their knowledge, and skills in a new situation?

A great example of testing for understanding is the upcoming PYP Exhibition. Students have chosen a real world issue that is important to them, studied it and are coming up with some action that can be done to “fix” it.

Effective assessment has a purpose and is not just a mark or grade. It is an indication of progress towards a goal. GOODBYE Farewell to all of our families leaving at the end of this year. We will miss you and hope you settle in well to your

new school communities. Keep in touch, we love to hear how our past students are doing!

TONGO SISTER SCHOOL Towards the end of November, a number of SBB School Leaders and Staff visited our sister school at Tongo.

SBB has supported this school from the very beginning, being involved in the laying of the foundation stone until

now. We were very warmly welcomed with the Tongo School drum band, led by our music teacher Pak Hendra.

Pak Hendra supports this band every Tuesday afternoon. After this, the two schools signed a Memorandum of

Understanding, pledging continued support for both schools. I thank PT AMNT for all of their work, as well as the

Indonesian Government and the local Regency for their assistance in developing this small school on our

doorstep. As we heard, ‘one day the gold will run out, but the education we provide will last forever’.

CORRECTION—COMMENCEMENT OF TERM 3 The last day of the Semester will be Friday 15th December, 2017. Students will resume classes on Wednesday

17th January, 2018.

SBB ARTS FESTIVAL Thank you to all involved in this years Arts Festival. Pak Peter and his team who coordinated it all, the teachers

and students who did a fantastic job with rehearsals and of course our parents who helped make some stunning

costumes. As Pak Arief said at the end of Day 1, the Arts helps develop imagination and creativity. This years

theme, ‘we are all uniqueindividuals’, also celebrated the diversity we have at our school and promoted

acceptance and celebration of our differences. Once again, thank you one and all for a job well-done!

CHANGE IN OFFICES Commencing next Term, Pak Michael and Pak Habib will swap offices. As our school leaders this will give them

both an opportunity to be more involved in these respective campuses. Pak Michael will be found at Kayu Besi

Campus, and Pak Habib will be at the Raya Ketimus campus.

FROM PRINCIPAL - Dr. Habiburrahman

Warm greetings from Sekolah Buin Batu! Semester 1 concluded today, Friday 15 December 2017. I would like to take this opportunity to reflect and congratulate all SBB staff for making this term a successful one.

This semester, National Accreditation Body (BAN) conducted a visit to SBB for the accreditation of our early childhood section, and we have just received the result. We are nationally accredited A! This is one of the requirements for the early childhood permit extension as an SPK School/International School. We are now preparing for the accreditation and permit extension of primary and secondary school sections. Congratulations teams! Ministry of education representative visited SBB last week. This was a monitoring and evaluation visit (Monev) conducted on a regular basis by the Ministry of Education and Cultures. Thank you to Pak Arief, Ketimus campus coordinator, and Ibu Yuni for your support to make this visit an effective and efficient one. Yesterday, we organized a Parents Meeting. We shared about school academic reinforcement roster and other related matters with the parents of year 9. The Academic Reinforcement (AR) is to begin next week. This program aims at supporting year 9 students for their national exams. Special thanks to Pak Habibi, deputy principal of secondary school, for your hard work in making sure the AR runs as scheduled.

Our admin, HR and ancillary staff have been very productive. I really appreciate their efforts and hardwork they have demonstrated this semester. These include school Dapodik system, finance, housekeeping, expat affairs, student-related administration, library, transport, national exams preparation, proctor training, arts festival, PYP exhibition, report card printing and distribution, and so on. I would also like to say goodbye to Miss Kelsey and Miss Naomi who will leave SBB this week. Thank you for being great teams at Sekolah Buin Batu. SBB Parents, students, teachers and all the staff will miss you. Wish you a great success in the next chapter of your life journey. Many thanks to all SBB teams and all the stakeholders for your continued support and collaboration. Teamwork worked, and it is now time for a recharge. Have a safe and meaningful holiday. I am looking forward to seeing you next semester!

KAYU BESI CAMPUS NEWS — Herman Habibi At last, we are now at the end of Term 2. At Kayu Besi, we have experienced a fruitful semester 1 with various school events. The Year 6 PYP Exhibition was interesting and went very well at KB Campus. The students showed their conceptual understandings and knowledgeable through a number of pieces of work to their parents and the student audiences. These presentations were original, full of students’ expression and creativity.

On Thursday, 13 December 2017 our student representative council led the final assembly at KB Campus by conducting various games aimed at teambuilding for the students. The students were divided into groups and participated in various games and activities. Students and teachers were excited to participate in this program.

I would like update with staff and parents that Pak Wira undertook a professional development course as a School Proctor. For this important task, we invited a trainer from KSB who worked together with Pak Wira to set up the application and system for our forthcoming Computer Based National Exams.

I thank everyone for their collegial support and collaboration and wish you a safe holiday. Herman Habibi

RAYA KETIMUS CAMPUS NEWS — Arief Budiman As we reach the end of Semester 1, I would like to look back for a moment and acknowledge a few of the many great individual and collective student achievements this past semester.

We started the year with a warm welcome to new parents—particularly new parents who had just moved to Batu Hijau and enrolled their children at school. Our Parent-Teacher Conferences went smoothly and successfully communicated this semester programs. Three-Way Conferences gave the opportunity for all teachers-students-parents to collaborate for student success. Seesaw was initiated and successfully utilized as a digital portfolio to record student’s learning. The Year 6 PYP Exhibition as the culmination of the PYP program has been conducted successfully. Semester 1 report card distribution as the conclusion of this semester has also been successfully done.

Last but not least, I would like to thank and congratulate all Ketimus staff and teachers for their hard work and never-ending contribution to all school programs as well as student learning. I wish you all have a safe and enjoyable holiday with your family and beloved ones. I am looking forward to collaborating with you all to make a better, fun and more meaningful semester 2 programs.
