Generally, chemical fertiliser applications are used as they are critical to boosting crop productivity. Besides improved varieties and better irrigation methods, one of the factors that contributed to the enhanced crop productivity during the green revolution and afterward is the application of chemical Nitrogen (N), Phosphorus (P), and Potassium (K) fertilizers. However, excessive use of these chemicals over decades has affected the soil quality. A concerted effort is on to cut down the use of chemical fertilisers in agriculture. Global P reserves are finite and likely to be irreversibly exhausted in the next 100-200 years. These resources are also asymmetrically distributed globally. Therefore, long-term planning for the uninterrupted supply of P-fertilisers either by securing P-reserves or cutting down P-use in agriculture is crucial to food security and agriculture sustainability. According to the report, countries like India, which lack big natural P-reserves and meets its P-fertilisers demand by importing the maximum amount of rock phosphates in different forms, need to focus on this area. In this innovative collaborative research, a team led by Dr Rahul Kumar and involving both material scientists and plant biologists from the UoH and ARCI,

first developed an industrially viable dry method to generate chemically stable and 5000 times smaller nano-diammonium phosphate (n-DAP) fertiliser. Subsequent testing of both types of fertilisers on tomato and wheat seedlings demonstrated an extraordinary superiority of nano-DAP fertiliser over the conventional granular DAP (c-DAP). By testing four different procedures for the nano-DAP dispersal, the team even recommends the best method of its application. In the lab-scale experiments, the reduced quantity of nano-DAP fertiliser input than c-DAP promoted the early seedlings growth and development in both crops. It also led to enhanced phosphate uptake efficiency in these seedlings. Cryo-milling of granular DAP was done at ARCI, Hyderabad. With nano-DAP, tomato seedings show better growth and develop more foliage. Based on promising results in the lab-scale experiments, the research team is now planning to test the efficacy of nano-DAP on tomato plants under field conditions. This work “Cryo-milled nano-DAP for enhanced growth of monocot and dicot plants” by Naorem Ronald Reagan Singh et al, June 2021 has been published in Nanoscale Advances, a scientific journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry, UK

Agrochemicals rm Heranba Industries said it has received environmental clearance from the government to set up additional manufacturing capacity at an estimated cost of Rs 110 crore at its facility in Gujarat. The company has received environmental clearance from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change for expansion of pesticide intermediates, fungicides, herbicides, insecticides manufacturing in Gujarat, Industries said in a regulatory ling. The company said it has an existing land parcel measuring 55,000 sq mt at Sarigam and no additional land will be required for the proposed expansion. This expansion plan will entail setting up

an additional manufacturing capacity of 24,900 TPA (tonnes per annum) for the manufacturing of insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and pesticides intermediates. “The estimated cost for this expansion is Rs 110 crore, which includes an existing investment of Rs 20 crore,” the company said. R K Shetty, Managing Director, Heranba, said this approval for expanding the Sarigam plant is a crucial development towards the company’s aim of expanding its multipurpose manufacturing capacity and enables it to achieve its growth objectives while continuing to build on its solid foundation

IFFCO will set up a nano urea liquid

manufacturing plant in Argentina in partnership with two agencies. They

will also explore the possibility of cooperation in trade and

investment in both the countries, in areas of mutual

interest.

Leading fertiliser cooperative IFFCO on Wednesday said it will set up a nano urea liquid manufacturing plant in Argentina in partnership with two agencies Instituto Nacional de Asociativismoy Economia Social (INAES) and Cooperative Confederation of Argentina ‘Cooperar’. IFFCO, INAES and Cooperar -- entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for the same, it said in a statement. According to IFFCO, the three will together analyze the feasibility of setting up a nano urea fertiliser manufacturing plant in Argentina with mutual collaboration. They will also explore the possibility of cooperation in trade and investment in both the countries, in areas of mutual interest, including agrochemicals and agricultural inputs to achieve sustainable development, it said. The MoU was signed by Cooperar President Ariel Guarco INAES President Alexandre Roig and IFFCO Marketing Director Yogendra Kumar in a virtual meeting in presence of various officials of all groups.

Guarco is also the president of International Cooperative Alliance which is an alliance of around 111 countries across the globe with 320

cooperatives operating in various sectors. According to IFFCO Managing Director U S Awasthi,IFFCO’s nano urea liquid is a sustainable solution for plan nutrition with higher nutrient use efficiency and reduces soil, water and air pollution. Use of nano urea will have a huge impact on the quality of underground water, a very significant reduction of global warming with a positive impact on climate change and sustainable development, he said. “This is a special moment for IFFCO as well as Brazilian cooperatives as this will give more strength to the cooperatives in the world,” Awasthi said, adding that this innovative product will benefit the farmers of both the countries. The scope of MoU will be offering opportunities to exchange ideas and develop business relationships, to carry out joint research and training activities along with educational visits for better understanding and opportunities. They will also share best practices, create mutual opportunities, oer visibility, develop professional relationships, build resources for better service delivery, innovation and strengthening of cooperative ties between them and their members, the statement added

The government is planning to liberalise the Market Development Assistance (MDA) policy to promote the use of alternative fertilizers, Fertiliser Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said on Tuesday The MDA policy was earlier limited to city compost only, he said. At present, the government gives MDA of Rs 1,500 per tonne in the form of subsidy for scaling up production and consumption of city compost made out from city waste. “There were demands to expand this policy by incorporating organic waste like Biogas, Green Manure, organic compost of rural areas, solid/liquid slurry, etc,” an official statement quoted Mandaviya as saying in a review meeting with ministry officials here.
