Championships

Special thanks to Paul Nolen of the Gallery Golf Club for hosting the Ping Southwest Section Championship and Mac McCarley of Antelope Hills for hosting the Senior Section Championship. While the venues were first class their level of hospitality exceeded our expectations—Thank You. Now for the Golf Part of the Story--- it was good---it was really good. The Section Championship had a field of over 90 players that spent three days working their way around just over 7,000 yards of the North Course at the Gallery Golf Club. On Day 1 The average score was just under 74 and 24 professionals were able to shoot under par. Rob Smyser of Desert Mountain led the way with an opening round of seven under par 65 for a one shot lead over Brandon Smith of Ventana Canyon with 22 other players within 6 shots of the lead. Day 2 played a little tougher for most, with the average score going up by nearly a shot, although a few players found little trouble as 66’s were posted by Las Vegas Country Club’s Jason Edmiston, Whisper Rock’s Jesse Wheeler and 2011 Champion Jon Stanley. Twelve players were able to shoot par or better on both of the first two days and the leaderboard showed Jon Stanley (69-66) leading the way over Travis Long (68-68), Brandon Smith (68-70) Bobby Pancratz (69-69) Paul Trittler (69-70) Blayne Hobbs (69-71) Glen Griffith (68-72) Jeff Yurkiewicz (69-71) Jeff Thomas (69-72) Mike Malaska (69-72) Nick Hodge (72-70) and Scott Wright (72-71). The cut was at a “low” 3 over par 147 after two days of play and the competition along with the weather was “heating-up”. The Day 3 scoring average was right at par, although it was a day of movement on the leader board. The very well- manicured layout of the golf course provided for good scoring opportunities—while the courses difficulty provided significant teeth for the players trying to play it well for three consecutive days. Starting four shots off the lead Glen Griffith was able to put together a bogey free round of 67 which turned out to be the best of the day. Glen was able to pass everyone on Day 3 except Travis Long who carded a one under par 71 to force a playoff. Glen continued to be the better player on Day winning the event on the first playoff hole. Jon Stanley finished solo third one shot back with a final roller coaster round of 73 that included 4 bogeys and a double—but a clutch par on #17 (where he lost a ball) and a birdie at the 18th to stay one ahead of the hard charging Troy Helseth and Mike Malaska (final round 68’s) and the steady play of Paul Trittler and Brandon Evans.

A short two weeks later 45 of the Southwest Section Seniors travelled to Antelope Hills to compete for the Senior Section Championship and 5 Spots in the PGA’s Senior PNC to be held in mid-October. The Championship and one of the spots was never in doubt as steady Paul Trittler carded an eagle and 11 birdies in 36 holes to win by three shots over Larry Makin (no bogeys in two days) and Bill Dodd, Jr (7 birdies on Day 2). Kim Dolan also earned a spot with a two day total of 6 under par—but the drama came in earning the 5th and final spot. Finishing the event at 5 under par were Chris Endres, Bob Lendzion and Ralph West. A playoff commenced. Bob made a conventional par on the first playoff hole (hit the green and had two putts) Chris and Ralph both made exceptional “up-and-downs” to extend the playoff for the final spot. Both Bob and Ralph birdied the second playoff hole (a par 5) with Ralph narrowly missing a mid-range eagle putt that would have ended it. Not to be deterred Ralph nailed down the final spot on the next hole. Best of the luck to all of the players in October and the PGA’s Senior Professional National Championship.

Pepsi—National Pricing and More As many of you are aware Pepsi is a National Sponsor for the PGA of America. What many of you may not be aware of is what comes along with that at the local level… and now …the local benefits are better than ever! Contact [email protected] by email or by phone at (602)437-7028 Chris would like to ensure that all facilities are ‘getting” the appropriate National Account pricing and he is offering quite an incentive package for facilities that are interested in converting to Pepsi. Jim McLean TrackMan Seminar in 2012 Top Reasons To Attend 1. Earn your Trackman University Level I & II Certification 2. Learn Teaching Systems You Can Implement Without A TrackMan 3. Receive Valuable Research About The Golf Swing & Ball Flight Laws 4. Receive 8 PGA MSR Points 5. One Year Membership to Trackman University Online 6. Learn Valuable Golf Instruction Theories Using TrackMan Data Jim McLean and TrackMan University are pleased to announce a strategic collaboration where the two parties will deliver education seminars across the USA in 2012. McLean is a long time TrackMan owner and one of the top golf instructors in the world, named 1994 PGA of America Teacher of The Year, and currently ranked No.3 by Golf Digest, among many other distinctions. McLean was one of the first golf instructors to declare that Face Angle was far more important than Club Path in determining Launch Direction. TrackMan has since then proven McLean´s theory to be true. TrackMan, among other discoveries, has further proven that Club Path and Face Angle – as a rule of thumb - determine Launch Direction on a ratio of 1 to 4. TrackMan University is providing education and certification programs for golf industry professionals (instructors, fitters, coaches and players) who want to enhance their knowledge about the measured data parameters (swing and ball flight analysis) and the underlying theory about the ball flight laws. The first Jim McLean and TrackMan University seminar was held on March 19, 2012, at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida. Everyone in attendance enjoyed the opportunity to learn an incredible amount of information from the TrackMan University staff as well as Jim McLean. The semi nar package includes a one-year TrackMan University Member ship and one day seminar with Jim McLean and TrackMan. During the one-day seminar, attendees will learn about McLean’s experience with TrackMan. Jim integrates the TrackMan data in teaching his students the various swing principles to improve. TrackMan Vice-President Matt Frelich, a PGA Professional, will support Jim McLean by presenting TrackMan University curriculum Level 1 & 2 (pictured on right). By attending the seminar, attendees become TrackMan University members and will be able to log in at TrackMan University (http://trackmanuniversity.com/) for achievement of TrackMan Certified Professional Level I & II status, including the possibility to achieve future TrackMan Certified Professional Level III Master status. Future 2012 seminar dates include the 30th of July at Jim McLean Texas Golf Center in Ft. Worth, Texas. The 12th of November at Sun Ridge Canyon in Scottsdale, Arizona. The seminars are USD 675 per participant. For current TrackMan University members the price is USD 250.
