Hybrid processing with Laserturn technology

Wear-protected components are generally produced in several stages

and on different machines: soft machining, hardening /coating and

hard processing. Changing over between the machines lengthens

throughput times and requires extra logistics input. Yet the market is

calling for shorter delivery times – even though components and

process chains are becoming more complex, diversity is increasing and

production batch sizes are shrinking.

The response from Monforts is: RNC 400 Laserturn.

Sample applications:

■ Transmission and drive shafts: for laser-hardening of

bearing and valve seats locally and without distortion,

followed by hard turning as the final process

■ Armouring e.g. using Stellite with build-up welding,

then final processing

The hybrid machine combines classic turning with laser

processing, thus reducing set-up, transport and down

times. Tools, for example, can be soft turned, hardened

and hard turned in one set-up. The RNC 400 Laserturn

is a series turning machine which also has a revolver-

integrated laser, for which a patent is pending. Beam

decoupling is via optical tools with VDI-40 interfaces

The laser also opens up completely new work areas for

turning, such as the laser-supported machining of sin-

tered ceramic tools, e.g. silicon nitride, which had

previously required laborious grinding. There are con-

siderable advantages when processing contours in par-

ticular. The laser softens the material so that it can be

cut with clear definition with very little wear – with a

surface precision of Ra = 0.2 µm.

dition, the laser system is completely integrated into

the machine tool. Only one device – the machine‘s NC

control – needs to be operated. The machine operator

does not need to be an expert in laser technology. It can

– Additional material in wire form
