With so many different types of motor scooters available todaybuyers must do their homework before making a purchase. Vespa,Honda, Piaggio, big engine, small engine, gas, electric, mobility,foldable, seats, handgrips, where do I start?

Before the 1920s it was an easy decision, a foot-powered pushscooter or none at all. But once Gino Tsai from Shanghai, Taiwandeveloped the Razor scooter it changed everything. His motorscooters became popular so quickly there were people waiting inline for six months before they could get one.

In the 1950s companies like Vespain the UK started selling the firstof their gas motor scooters. It wasa big hit at the 1950 MotorcycleShow and quickly became a bighit in the UK as well. Vespa soldover 125,000 in the UK betweenthe years of 1950 to 1958. Piaggiofrom Vespa and Lambretta fromInnocenti started selling theirmodels in Italy and France too,quickly becoming the vehicles that everyone had to own. By theearly 1950s the sale of motor scooters topped 1 million a year inFrance alone. Because of its popularity other countries such asFrance and Germany decided to get in on the boom by manufactur-ing their own models.

Today, after more than 50 years since the first gas scootersappeared, there are many different makes and models. We haveelectric, gas powered, foldable, mobility and utility motor scootersdotting the globe. There are specialized scooters for just aboutevery task. 0 They have become a worldwide phenomenon becausethey are cheap to own, economical to operate, are very handy andfunctional, and most of all they are a lot of fun. But with all of themakes and models which one is right for you?

Let's start with the different types. Gas motor scooters are thefastest around. They will take youlonger distances and reach higherspeeds than any of the other vari-eties. There are smaller and lightermodels that will be perfect for run-ning errands around town while thelarger and heavier touring modelswill take you on longer trips. Plus,the larger the gas tank the fartheryou can travel before needing tostop at a service station.

Electric varieties are a little more economical to run, but will usu-ally travel only about 10 or 15 miles before needing a recharge.Their battery capacity has improved dramatically over the years,but they cannot be taken for long trips due to the fact that their bat-teries will need recharging periodically. However, for short tripsaround the city they are wonderful little vehicles. Plus, most scoot-

ers have a large storage capacity under the seat sothey are ideal for trips to the grocery store or forother light shopping sprees.

The elderly or handicapped typically use what isreferred to as mobility scooters. These are usuallyelectric models and have 3 or 4 wheels for extrastability. These models give the elderly or disabledthe ability to get about in their homes or around theneighborhood more easily. Without mobility scoot-ers many of the disability-impaired would be con-fined to their beds.

Another very popular type is the foldable scooter.These are very small and are made for short tripsaround town. They are particularly popular amongthe younger crowds. The beauty of these models isthat they are extremely compact and can be foldedfor storage in small places. If you work just a fewmiles from your home you can travel to work onyour folding scooter and then fold it up and put itunderneath your desk at work. Very handy.

There are also utility scooters which can be usedfor many different purposes. They can be used asgolf carts or for hauling things. Many big business-es use these types for getting around their factories.Schools use them for driving through the parkinglot, checking for cars that shouldn't be there. Majorleague sports stadiums use them to drive peoplefrom one place to another. These are wonderfulvehicles that can be used for a variety of reasons.

Once you've decided which type is right for yourneeds the next step is to figure out what options, ifany, you would like included on your vehicle. Ofcourse you can choose from many different colorsand designs, but there are other options available toyou. You can choose from the many varieties ofcovers, locks (for security), cases or side bags forstorage, helmets, seats, handgrips, windshields orwindscreens, backrests for touring, chrome kits,rear luggage racks and many more options. The listof accessories can go on for quite some time.

As a rule of thumb first choose the type of scooteryou want, whether it be electric, gas, foldable orutility. This is the easy part because the type youpurchase will depend upon your needs. Once thatdecision has been made look at several popularmodels in your area and decide which one looksand feels right to you. Most have accessories thatare manufactured for a specific model so acces-sories cannot be decided upon until you knowwhich motor scooter you are going to buy. Onceyou've decided which accessories you want for themodel you chose it's a simple matter of drivingyour scooter out of the dealership. And it's nothingbut fun from there on out.

Gas scooters have come a long way over the past 50 years. Theyare functional, fun, convenient and cheap. What more could youask for?

The first patents for scooters go back as far as 1921. The Razorscooter was later developed by Gino Tsai in Shanghai, Taiwan andbecame an instant hit with the public. It didn't take long for motorscooter popularity to expand all over the globe.

Even before 1950 there were as many as 110,000 scooters on theroad in Italy alone. It has been just a little over 50 years since theVespa-Douglas Corporation in the UK sold their first gas scooters.The Douglas corporation was on the verge of bankruptcy whenthey first began selling their gas scooters. It was a big hit at the1950 Motorcycle Show and saved the company from possiblefinancial ruin.

From 1950 to 1958 Vespa sold over 125,000 of their gas poweredscooters in the UK. Why the great success? During this period theEuropean countries didn't have a great deal of money and there wasnot much gas available to the public. Due to the scarcity of gaso-line and the high gas mileage of the gas motor scooter it's populari-ty quickly escalated.

It didn't take long for the Italian models (the Piaggio from Vespaand the Lambretta from Innocenti) to branch out to other countries.In France they became so popular the French tried to get in on theboom by manufacturing their own. By the early to mid 1950s thesale of gas scooters climbed to about 1 million a year in Francealone.

Other countries wanted to profit from the newest craze and tried toclimb on the band wagon. While some were successful others werenot. Germany began to manufacture larger touring models, but thisdid not satisfy the public in the way the smaller, cheaper and morefuel-efficient models from Italy and France did. These smallermodels were extremely popular in the European market.

Tourist Scooters Manufacturers in Germany built some very strongand powerful versions and were the first to install electric starters.These larger versions were great for traveling, touring and evenracing, but were not as popular as the smaller, cheaper, more effi-cient models used for traveling shorter distances around town.

Vespa began marketing a couple of very popular gas powered

scooters from Piaggio, the GS 125cc and the GS 150cc. These were improved versions of the earlier models for several reasons.

The biggest reason is probably because the heavy gear mechanismrods were replaced by smaller and lighter cables.

France's Roussey Scooters tried to one-up the Italian competitionby coming out with a 175cc model. These were very nice vehiclesand included the first water-cooled engines along with other newfeatures, but because it had a pull-start it could not compete withthe newer models from Italy that were already offering versionswith electric starts.

As these wonderful vehicles have evolved over the years they havebecome increasingly more popular all over the world. Today theyare everywhere. They are cheap to purchase, economical to operate,and are very handy and functional. These are not toys and are gen-uinely a lot of fun to ride. There are electric, gas powered, foldable,mobility and utility scooters.

The electric types are often used by kids and teens, but are alsopopular with the elderly and handicapped. Models for the handi-capped are usually called mobility scooters. Folding varieties canbe folded up and conveniently stored under desks, in closets or inother tiny areas and utility types are used for many different pur-poses. They are more popular than go karts, mini bikes or go carts.Scooters, sometimes called mopeds or go peds, are very functional,convenient and are here to stay.

would go into production, after being quiet-ly shown (or not-so-quietly, depending onwhom you ask) to a hand-picked group ofprospective customers, including theswanky Pebble Beach crowd during theweek of the famed golf community'sConcours d'Elegance.

With its futuristic, multi-faceted (some sayoverdone) styling, the 918 may somedaytake its place as the first Porsche supercarsince the long-planned and short-livedCarrera GT, a $440,000 mid-engine whichended production in 2006.

The Porsche 918 Spyder is powered by a500-horsepower, V8 gasoline-poweredengine and two electric motors (one each onthe front and rear axle) that generate a com-bined 160 kilowatts of power, roughly theequivalent of 218 hp, for a total of 718 hp.The powertrain is mated to Porsche's dual-clutch PDK transmission for lightening-quick shifts. Energy is stored in a fluid-

cooled lithium-ion battery, which can becharged by plugging into a suitable electri-cal outlet.

Porsche, known for putting out conservativespecs on its cars, claims the 918 Spyder iscapable of achieving fuel economy numbersequivalent to 78 miles per gallon. But witha 0-to-100 km/h (about 62 mph) time of lessthan 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 198

mph, we're guessing most drivers won'tbe out hypermiling.

Performance of the 918 Spyder is largelydetermined by one of four driving modes:

E-Drive Mode: This all-electric mode isgood for about 16 miles.

Hybrid Mode: Like other two-mode-hybridsystems, the 918 Spyder uses a combinationof the electric motors and combustionengine, depending on driving demands.Because driving styles and conditions are so

Sport Hybrid Mode: Uses both drive sys-tems, but with heavier focus on performance.Power is biased toward the rear wheels anduses Torque Vectoring for enhanced drivingdynamics. No numbers here, either.

Race Hybrid Mode: Full power, with push-to-pass E-Boost. Batteries must be fullycharged to use this mode, and no doubtEPA ratings are abysmally low. Butyou'll look great passing thetool in the Ferrari next toyou on the freeway.

The 918 Spyderalso convertskinetic energyfrom brakinginto electricalenergy that getsstored in the bat-tery to provide anon-demand powerboost for fast

acceleration. But this is not to be confusedwith KERS, which some might recognize asthe promising but sometimes problematictechnology found in recent incarnations ofFormula 1 cars, as well as Porsche's newexperimental 918 RSR racecar.

All that extra technology means extra weight.So cutting bulk on the Porsche 918 Spyderwas crucial. Porsche used a race-inspiredmonocoque body shell made of carbon-fiber-reinforced plastic (CFP), as well as magne-sium and aluminum throughout the innerworkings of the concept car to achieve a curbweight of 3,285 pounds. However, Porschehas yet to tell us what type of roof will beused on the production car, which couldtweak that number.

OverviewCadillac is introducing a new full-size sedanfor 2013. The 2013 Cadillac XTS fills ahole left in the Cadillac lineup since produc-tion of the STS and DTS ended a couple ofyears ago. In their place is the 2013 CadillacXTS, a roomy cruiser that shows off the lat-est technology, upgraded interior materialsand a refined Cadillac design.

Exterior styling on the Cadillac XTS isbold, but softer than on other models we'veseen from the brand in the past few years.Also notable is the use of premium interiormaterials, such as leather upholstery as stan-dard equipment, as well as a fully config-urable electronic TFT (thin-film transistor)instrument cluster in front of the driver.

The Cadillac XTS is the first model to useCUE, an acronym for Cadillac UserExperience. The system features a largetouchscreen and uses proximity sensors,haptic feedback and voice recognition tocontrol phone, audio and navigation func-tions. CUE comes standard on all XTSmodels, but navigation costs extra on thetwo lower trim levels. To sweeten the deal,Cadillac is including an iPad with all newXTS purchases, pre-loaded with an app that

helps owners learn how to use the CUE sys-tem.

Underneath the new wrappings are decided-ly familiar components. Namely, GeneralMotors' Premium Epsilon platform, origi-nally developed by Opel and used in severalvariations on GM vehicles worldwide,including the current Buick LaCrosse. The2013 Cadillac XTS is powered by GM'smuch-used 3.6-liter, naturally aspirated V6engine found on other Cadillac andChevrolet models. Same goes for the 6-speed automatic transmission.

The new Cadillac XTS is longer than theold STS, shorter than the DTS, though theXTS rides on a much shorter wheelbase(111.7 inches). The XTS is slightly widerthan the STS but 2 inches narrower than theDTS. The front seats in the new XTS areslightly roomier than those in the STS andDTS.

The 3.6-liter V6 in the new XTS delivers304 horsepower at 6800 rpm, 264 pound-feet of torque at 5200 rpm. That's similar tothe output of the old STS V6 model. Fueleconomy in the Cadillac XTS is an EPA-estimated 17/28 miles per gallon

City/Highway. The XTS is much more effi-cient on the highway than the old STS andDTS models, which were rated 15/23 mpg.

The new Cadillac XTS offers European-inspired ride and handling, quality materi-als, and plenty of standard features. And itretails for much less than comparable mod-els from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi,Lexus, and Hyundai, making it a compellingvalue.

WalkaroundWhile it retains styling cues that are dis-tinctly Cadillac, the new Cadillac XTS exte-rior is softer and more refined than othermodels in the lineup. Sleeker lines arefavored over razor-sharp creases and angles.Headlamps appear more stretched back thanon the smaller Cadillac CTS. And the shapeof the front grille gives the XTS an expres-sion that's more agreeable than angry.

In back, the rear is crisp and tidy, keepingthe signature Cadillac vertical tail lampswithout looking too busy. All models abovethe base trim have a dual exhaust integratedinto the rear fascia for an even cleaner look.

But one could never dismiss the XTS asdemure. It still sports plenty of bling, likepolished chrome trim around windows,doors and deck lid that glisten in the sun.Not to mention the expansive chromedgrille. Paired with its Cadillac badge, theface of the XTS is unmistakable as aCadillac in a rearview mirror.

Model Lineup The 2013 Cadillac XTS comes standardwith front-wheel drive and is available withall-wheel drive (AWD). Several trim levelsare available. All come with the 3.6-liter V6and 6-speed automatic transmission.

XTS Platinum Collection ($58,160) andAWD ($60,385) get unique 20-inch wheels,a unique grille design, sunroof, rear sun-shades, upgraded leather upholstery, leather-covered dash and doors, microfiber suedeheadliner, premium floor mats, unique woodtrim, and the Driver Assist Package.

Safety features on all models include brakeassist, stability and traction control, front-seat knee airbags and rear thorax air bags.The optional Driver Awareness Package andDriver Assist Package add safety featuresthat can help a driver avoid or reduce theseverity of a crash. The optional rearviewcamera can help the driver spot a childbehind the car when backing up. Optionalall-wheel drive can improve handling stabil-ity in slippery conditions.

Driving ImpressionsThe chassis of the Cadillac XTS is incredi-bly stable and composed, even aroundtwisty canyon corners. Standard MagneticRide Control manages the weight of the4,006-pound XTS masterfully, and providesfirm yet comfortable support, with very littleif any body roll around corners. The cabinwas quiet, with wind and road noise scarce-ly detectable. Huge Brembo brakes weresolid and confidence-inspiring.

We found steering to be responsive, with asatisfying, connected feel that wasn't toolight or two weighty. This first-generationXTS uses hydraulic steering, thoughCadillac product specialists told us an all-new electric steering system is currently indevelopment.

Handling is most rewarding in Sport mode,which, to our chagrin, can only be accessedby shifting the gearbox into Manual andusing the buttons on the back of the steeringwheel to change gears. While in Drive, theXTS remains in normal Comfort mode.

Acceleration-wise, the XTS seemed to lackoomph, even in Sport mode. Caddy's 3.6-liter V6 engine isn't wimpy, but peak horse-power and torque kick in pretty high on thetach, and we suspect attempts at maximizingfuel economy have stripped the XTS of itsfull performance potential.

Fuel economy for the Cadillac XTS is anEPA-estimated 17/28 mpg City/Highway.

The transmission also kept us wanting.Third gear was just too tall, but second wasjust too low, making us feel like Goldilocksthrough many uphill climbs and steepswitchbacks. We were also surprised that,with competitors using 7- and 8-speed trans-missions, GM is still using its aging 6-speedautomatic on an all-new sedan. If Cadillacengineers could address these powertrainissues, the XTS could catapult to the top ofits class.

SummaryAll-new, the 2013 Cadillac XTS is a greatchoice for long road trips and freeway cruis-ing with plenty of technology, legroom andcargo space.
