Advocate Children's Hospital Patient to Throw
First Pitch at Wrigley Field
When Luke takes the mound on August 24, it will be
the first time this energetic little Cubs fan steps foot in
Wrigley Field – and a day his parents weren’t sure
would ever be possible. Luke was born with a
congenital heart defect and there wasn’t enough
blood going to his lungs. When he was nine days old
he had a shunt placed in his heart to provide blood
flow to the lungs. At nine months, he had to undergo
his first open-heart surgery. It was immediately
apparent to Luke’s care team and parents that this
little guy was resilient and happy. Within days of his
second surgery he was eating and more importantly,
he was smiling. As supporters of both Luke and
Chicago baseball, we are really excited about this
once in a lifetime opportunity.

Donations to Emergency Department Renovation
The Advocate Charitable Foundation has received
$250,000 from the Adreani Foundation of Park
Ridge, in support of the emergency department
renovation and expansion at Advocate Lutheran
General Hospital. The Adreani Foundation has been
giving to the hospital for nearly 50 years. The
Adreani Family owns Norwood Builders.
The Service League of Advocate Lutheran General
Hospital has also committed $150,000 in support of
the emergency expansion project. The Service
League has been part of this institution since its
inception and has been incredibly generous giving
nearly $2 million in philanthropic gifts to various
programs and services at the hospital.

Peds in the Weeds
The 33rd annual Peds in the Weeds picnic was held on Sunday, August 3rd. The event featured a picnic for current and former pediatric oncology and brain tumor patients and families treated at Advocate Children’s Hospital and the Midwest Children’s Brain Tumor Center. The picnic was also a time for families to connect and have fun outside of the hospital. This year’s event brought a crowd of over 750 people and reminded us how many lives we have touched over the years. Activities included carnival games, rides, bouncy houses, miniature golf, face painting, food and so much more!
The event culminated with a balloon release that symbolized and celebrated those we have lost and everything our patients and their families have battled through. It was an exciting g and emotional moment.
Annual School Supply Drive
During the month of August, you can help some of
our service area’s neediest children by donating
school supplies. Your contribution of new or usable
school supplies will benefit local students who don’t
know the luxury and excitement of back-to-school
shopping.

Celiac Center Cooking Class for College
On July 30th the Celiac Center hosted a cooking demonstration and discuss course for college students. There are many unique challenges that
face young adults with Celiac disease. This class was specifically for college age and young adults to give them strategies to navigate the gluten-free diet. “It is very difficult for an 18 year old to talk with food
service staff to ensure his/her food is gluten-free,” says Carrie Ek, Nutritionist at the Pediatric Celiac Center. There are many things to consider, especially cross-contact (GF food cannot come in contact with gluten containing foods). Students need to talk to the school, but unfortunately most do not.
