The Chennai City Traffic Police (Anna Nagar Division) have eased traffic regula-tions at the Shanthi Colony-Third Avenue Road Junction. The traffic police have now lifted restrictions on taking a right turn from the Fourth Ave-nue Road to the Third Avenue Road that leads to Anna Arch. Previously motorists had to take a left turn from the Fourth Ave-nue Road (Shanthi Colony) and then take a ‘U’ Turn near Anna Nagar Roundtana to go to Anna Arch.
Many motorists have welcomed this initiative and ex-pressed the hope that the new arrangement would be made per-manent. “I usually avoid the Fifth Ave-nue Road (Thiruman-galam-Roundtana stretch) due to the heavy traffic and pres-ence of traffic signals at 12th Main Road, Blue Star and Round-tana. Instead I would take the Fourth Ave-nue Road from Thiru-mangalam (near the flyover end) and then take a left turn at the end of the road to reach Roundtana and take a ‘U’ Turn. Now I don’t need to do that any longer. I can sim-ply take a right turn onto Third Avenue
Road due to the new traffic arrangement,” said Ambalavanan, a resident of Welcome Colony. He takes this road daily to reach his office, a private estab-lishment, on Nelson Manickam Road.
Vehicle drivers say that allowing a right turn at the Third Av-enue Road junction from Shanthi Colony had reduced their commute time. “Ear-lier I used to be caught at the Roundtana junction for a few minutes and again at the traffic signal near the Third Avenue Road-Fourth Avenue Road junction. Now that is not the case. I just need to wait at the Shanthi Colony signal and then race ahead to go to Anna Arch,” said a motor-ist, who identified himself as Stephen, a resident of Mogap-pair West.
Another benefit that has accrued to motorists from the new traffic arrange-ment, introduced a fortnight or so ago, is that now they don’t risk accidents at the Shanthi Colony junc-tion. Earlier, some two-wheeler riders used to take an illegal right turn that led to accidents from on-coming vehicles. Now that is a thing of the past, says motorists like Varshini.

Not long ago the road ad-joining Spar-
tan Nagar – close to the Greenfields Apart-ments – used to sport a Spartan look with a well laid road that would offer a smooth ride to the motorists. Cut to the present the road that connects Spartan Nagar First and Second Streets has lost its past glory. All because of a contrac-tor engaged by the Greater Chennai Cor-poration did a shoddy job of re-laying the road recently.
“This was one of the best roads in the Mogappair neighbour-hood and did not re-quire re-laying in the first place. But workers engaged by the con-tractor milled the road and disappeared with-out completing the work,” said Thomas, a resident of Spartan Nagar. Now the road is unmotorable and poses a risk to those riding two-wheelers as balancing on the un-even surface is diffi-cult. Besides, the good look of the neighbour-hood has gone.
Likewise, workers engaged by a contrac-tor to re-lay the Spar-tan Nagar Second Street have done an unprofessional job, residents complained. They alleged that the workers paved the road by just about an inch or so and then filled it up with bitumen and tar raising the level of the road by about three to four inches. If at all there was a need to relay the road, the con-tractor should have done a proper job fol-lowing rules wherein the road is paved thor-oughly and the height of the road retained, they said. Such mind-less action of raising the height of the road has led to the surface of the houses built on
either sides of the road going below the road level. This means dur-ing a heavy monsoon season, the local resi-dents will have to em-battle flooding as the water – that would have otherwise flowed elsewhere – would eas-ily enter the homes as the sides of the roads would be more than that of the surface of the gate.
A c c o r d i n g t o Thomas, the contrac-tor also ended up cov-ering the storm water drain inlets with tar and bitumen. “When the work was on the local residents pro-tested and urged him not to concretise the storm water drain in-lets. We suggested that it could be temporarily
covered with a ply-wood or cardboard which could be re-moved when the road laying work is com-pleted. But the supervi-sor did not agree and simply left saying some other agency would come and clear the openings to the storm water drain inlets. No one has come so far,”
said Thomas.Residents are wor-
ried as without proper storm water inlets it could lead to flooding of the street during monsoons.
An haphazard approach by the workers has now almost sealed the storm water drain outlet with
tar and blue metal chips.
This road no longer sports a Spartan look

Traffic snarls would delay completionProjects to construct
flyover works on the arte-rial roads in the city have been progressing at a slow pace and causing traffic snarls at crucial junctions during peak hours.
Work at the flyover near the Chennai moffusil bus terminus on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai was to be completed somewhere between 18 months and 33 months, but there seems to be no signs of completion.
Various reasons are cit-ed for the delay including heavy traffic hindering works and limited clear-
ance given by the traffic police.
Twenty-five months af-ter the work on the flyover
at CMBT on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai began, the Highways Department is able to complete only 50 per cent of the works ow-ing to the restriction made by the traffic police allow-
ing work only at night. They are allowed to
work only between 11 pm and 6 am as there is around the clock heavy traffic movement in the stretch which houses Mofussil bus terminus and the omni bus stand beside the Koyambe-du vegetable market.
The four-lane bi-direc-tional flyover which is be-ing constructed at a cost of Rs 93.5 crore would allow the vehicles to avoid two signals at CMBT and Ka-liamman Koil Street junc-tions. They hope to com-plete the flyover work by the December end.
Plucking mangoes turned out to be fatal for a 30-year-old daily wage labourer in Mogappair west as he was electro-cuted. The deceased Kumar from Ariyalur was working as a la-
bourer in the city. He shared a room with his friends at Nehru Nagar in Thirumangalam.
As they did not have work on Sunday the trio decided to pluck man-goes from a tree in Mo-
hanram Nagar. W h i l e a l l t h r e e
climbed, Kumar who went atop got in touch with a live wire and was thrown away. He fell on the ground and died on the spot. Police retrieved the body and sent it to Kilpauk Medical Col-lege Hospital for post mortem. A case has been registered.

Women who experience symptoms of de-pression, even without a clinical diagnosis, are at an increased risk of developing multiple chronic diseases, according to a study.
The study, published in the journal Ameri-can Psychological Association Health Psy-chology, examined 7,407 middle-aged women (45-50 years) for over 20 years.
During the study period, 43.2 per cent women experienced elevated symptoms of depression and just under half the cohort were diagnosed or took treatment for depression.
Of the total, 2,035 or 63.6 per cent devel-oped multiple chronic diseases.
“These days many people suffer from mul-tiple chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke and cancer. We looked at how women progress in the development of these chronic diseases before and after the onset of depressive symptoms,” says a study.
“Experiencing depressive symptoms ap-peared to amplify the risk of chronic illness,” it said, adding that women suffering from depression were 1.8 times more likely to have multiple chronic health conditions.
“After women started experiencing these symptoms, they were 2.4 times more likely to suffer from multiple chronic conditions com-pared to women without depressive symp-toms,” he added.
Women with both conditions -- depression and chronic diseases -- were more likely to come from low-income households, be over-weight and inactive, smoke tobacco and drink alcohol.
“Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, eating a balanced diet, and reducing harmful behaviours could help prevent and slow the progression of multiple chronic dis-eases,” it added. Agencies

Barely weeks after civic works were completed on one
stretch of Ori Salai, con-tractors engaged by the Chennai Metro Water Sup-ply and Sewerage Board (CMWSSB – called Me-trowater in common par-lance) have dug up another portion of the road adding to the miseries of the resi-
dents and motorists. The Ori Salai connects
Pari Salai, a main bus route road in Mogappair East, with the Golden George Nagar and Nerkundram. The locality had a good motorable road in the past. But for the past year or so, the residents have been putting up with inconve-niences caused by the all too frequent civic works being undertaken by mul-
FRESh DIggINg up of roads adds to woes of residentstiple agencies. Only re-cently, they were troubled by a contractor laying the road without paving on half of the stretch of Ori Salai.
“Now about 10 days ago, a contractor engaged by the Metrowater dug up the Ori Salai right at the T Junction where the road meets the EB Road. They dug up a deep pit to lay sewer pipelines and the pit has not been adequately covered. The other day a cow came close to falling into the deep pit and an alert resident shooed it away,” said a resident of the locality, who did not want to be named.
“We don’t know how
long this work will take. Only recently they finished work on another end of the road. And our worry is when the work is com-pleted, the pit will be cov-ered in a haphazard man-ner making it difficult to motorists to ride on the stretch,” complained an-other resident, who identi-fied himself as Vignesh-waran.
Residents also com-plained that the frequent digging up of road has led to increased dust pollution in the neighbourhood, which is a cause for worry. “The road has become muddy at main places. When the wind blows or a vehicle passes by, it raises a dust cloud. The dust set-tles on the parked cars and buildings. We are unable to step out of our homes without covering our face with masks as the dust pol-lution is heavy. Every time I clean my car, I find it covered in a thick sheet of dust within no time. I find it difficult to clean a second time while going to office,” added Vigneshwaran.

Avoid travelling on footboard: S Rly
The Southern Railway (SR), which has proposed to restore fast local trains on Beach-Tambaram-Chengalpet-Tirumalpur from June 1, has made an appeal to the commuters to avoid travelling on footboard. Fast local services on this route were withdrawn in 2018 following “untoward incidents” at St Thomas Mount station, which claimed several lives.
Announcing the restoration of fast local services, SR, in a statement, has appealed to passengers to not travel on the footboard and avoid standing near the doorway with backpacks that can get caught in the passing. Recall-ing an incident where a backpack of a passenger got caught in a pillar along the track, SR said the backpacks pose a threat not only to their own lives, but to the lives of co-passengers.

After the cycle sharing system, the civic body is set to launch an e-bike sharing system.
These e-bikes will be battery-operated. A fully charged e-bike can travel for about 45km with 70%
power from the battery and 30% pedalling. This will be helpful as one would prefer a ride faster than a cycle.
It is learnt that it would be launched in four to five months. About 500 e-bikes
will be available at 50 loca-tions including metro sta-tions and other feeder stations.
The bikes will be GPS-enabled and can be un-locked using a mobile ap-plication.
