Customers going to the Amma Unava-gam, a low cost eatery run by the Greater Chennai Corporation, in

Thirumangalam junction are amused to find sacks of grains and vegetables stored on the floor at the space meant for customers to stand and dine. This has been the case there for many months now as the outlet does not have adequate facility to store provisions.

The Amma Unavagam outlet is function-ing at the Thirumangalam Junction just be-fore the 100 Feet Road signal that allows vehicle users to turn left towards Koyambedu and right towards Anna Nagar West. Custom-ers pointed out that the outlet had a kitchen-cum-serving area and an eating area where tall round tables have been placed for the customers to stand and consume food. Like all other Amma Unavagams here too idlis are sold at just one rupee a piece and variety rice is sold for Rs 3 and 5 per plate.

“I have been regularly visiting the Amma Unavagam here ever since it opened over two years ago because the food items are priced astonishingly low. For the past many months, however, I find it difficult to stand and eat during crowded hours as most of the floor space is taken over by sacks of grains and provisions that have been stocked in the eating zone,” said Achari, a 40-something daily wage labourer who stays in Thirumangalam.

During lean hours, the place is largely empty and customers manage to eat standing next to the stocked provisions. But the prob-lem gets acute during peak hours. “During breakfast time and lunch hour, this place gets very crowded. We find it difficult to manoeu-vre our way around the eating area as the stocked provisions pose a hurdle to free move-

ment within the premises,” pointed out Paranthaman, another regular visitor, who ekes out a living selling vegetables on a push cart.

A worker at the Amma Unavagam, who requested not to be identified, said, that the provisions were stored in the eating area for long because there is no adequate storing facility on the premises. “The kitchen area is just adequate to house the gas stove and other utensils. We don’t have enough space here,” she said.

Special buses from 5 placesduring Pooja, diwali holidays

To control the huge crowd of passengers during pooja and Di-wali holidays, the State transport department has decided to operate buses from five locations instead of one. Buses to Vellore, Hosur and Kancheepuram would be operated from Poonamallee bus stand, while buses to Andhra Pradesh would be operated from Madhavaram new bus stand.

The four-day pooja holiday be-gins on October 5. Buses to Tiruvan-

namalai, Thanjavur and Kumbako-nam will be operated from Tam-baram railway station and Tam-baram MEPZ respectively. Buses to Pondicherry, Cuddalore and Chid-ambaram will leave from KK Nagar bus stand.

Buses to other cities, including Madurai, Coimbatore, would leave from CMBT. The government would operate as many as 10,940 services from Chennai for Diwali from October 24 to October 26.

Twenty two patients at the Sundaram Medical Foundation Hospital at Shanthi colony in Anna Nagar had to be shifted out early on Thursday as its compound wall fell on electricity junction boxes cutting off power and the building was in danger of being flooded in the heavy downpour last week. Sources say that the generators were switched on and most of the patients were asleep and did not hear any noise as the rain was heavy.

The hospital authorities decided to shift

the patients as water had stagnated in the com-pound to a depth of one feet. Though the inci-dent happened in the wee hours, there were enough staff to shift the patients.

Organic manure to be door delivered

Quality organic manure produced using wet waste by the Greater Chennai Corpora-tion can now be home deliv-ered. The organic manure would be sold at Rs 20 per ki-logram.

The civic body had distrib-uted around 160 tonnes of or-ganic manure to the residents and to the city parks. Presently, there is huge stock of 190

tonnes in hand. National Agro Foundation and Chennai Test-ing Laboratory Private Limited have issued quality assurance certificates to the manure pro-duced by the Chennai Corpora-tion. Residents who require organic manure could contact Regional Office (South) on the number 9445194802 or send a WhatsApp message.

Residents should provide their address to which the ma-nure would be delivered. Pay-ment would be collected using cash-on-delivery mode.

Bank to organise quiz competition

If there is a need to il-lustrate the utter neglect of civic authorities in the neighbourhood, one needs to look no further than the sight of piled up garbage, debris and an abandoned heavy vehicle abutting the compound of a high-rise residential building on the main Thirumangalam-Mogappair Road.

As one proceeds to-wards Mogappair from Thirumangalam, diago-nally opposite the Hindu-stan Petroleum outlet one can come across the sight of a rusting mini-truck type vehicle in the midst of a

heap of an assortment of garbage and debris.

The vehicle has been parked close to the site where an electricity trans-former is located.

Those who travel on the road regularly say that this has been the case for many months now. “I have been passing by this garbage-cum-debris pile for quite some months and haven’t noticed it being cleared at all. If anything, on some days I get to see the pile of debris grow larger. I won-der how anyone could dump garbage with abso-lute impunity on a busy main road in a metropoli-tan city. After all this is one

of those roads in the Mogappair and Anna Nagar neighbourhood that sees movement of vehicu-lar traffic almost on a 24x7 basis on all weekdays,” says R Boopathy Raj, a resident of Shantiniketan Colony, which is about 100-odd metres away from the site.

Interestingly, being a main road, the Greater Chennai Corporation’s conservancy truck also passes through the stretch on a daily basis. “That’s the catch, you see. The conser-vancy agency’s truck pass-es by this place routinely but none bothers to clear up this mess. It is a mystery

Techie jumps to death from 8th floor

A woman software engineer allegedly leapt to death from the eighth floor of an IT park in Ambattur Industrial Estate on Thursday.

Police identified the woman as Danita, a native of Tiruchi, who was employed at iOPEX in Ambit IT Park. The incident is said to have taken place around 7 p.m. Workers heard a loud thud at the rear side of the software complex.

When they rushed to the spot, they found Danita lying dead. She is suspected to have jumped from the eighth floor through the stair-case provided for the emergency exit.

Students of Velammal Main School, Mogappair went on an educational trip to IIT Madras and took part in the open House 2019, the Science Expo conducted by the De-partment of Engineering design on Sept 21. The overnight rains that lashed Chennai on Thursday last have ex-posed the poor quality of roads in parts of the Mogappair neighbour-hood including near the Wavin Junction. The Wavin-Thirumangalam Road, which connects Anna Nagar with parts of Mogappair and Ambattur Estate and beyond, is a main bus route road in the locality and is expected to have better quality roads.

However, the overnight sharp showers, which in-cidentally turned to be the wettest day of this year for the Chennai Metropolis, left portions of the Wavin-Thirumangalam Road battered. The gravel had come off the road creating a large pothole making many question the quality

of civil works undertaken while laying the tar road.

Right in the middle of the busy road large pot-holes have been created forcing motorists to take extra caution while navi-gating through the area. "A day before the rains I had passed by the same stretch and the road sur-face was smooth giving me a comfortable riding expe-rience. But on Friday morning when I was riding my bike after the overnight rains, I was taken aback to find that the bitumen had come off in large quantity and the road had a large pothole. In fact the size of the pothole is such that motorists have to struggle to find motorable surface," complained Naveen Ku-mar, who rides to his office on a daily basis from his house in Ambattur.

Motorists lamented that

the road could not with-stand just one night's rains and this was pathetic to say

the least. "This is a crucial route for thousands of of-fice goers and students and

dozens of buses pass through the stretch on a daily basis. Therefore, it is only natural that the stan-dard of road laying must be of the highest quality. Unfortunately it is not so as exposed by these rains. I feel those responsible for such shoddy civic works must be held accountable in the strictest sense of the term. Only then would we have better civic infrastruc-ture," contended Jai Suri-ya, a young advocate and
