Velammal’s R Prag-gnanandhaa in all possibil-ity has a chance of becom-ing the youngest Grand-master in the world, when he made his maiden GM norm in the ongoing World Junior Chess Champion-ship in Tarvisio, Italy. The 12-year-old achieved this feat by defeating one of America’s top juniors Awonder Liang in the eighth round. However he drew his final round to fin-ish 4th. Another Velam-

malian Aravindh Chitham-baram tied with two others for the 3rd place. On better tie break count he bagged the bronze.

Praggnanandhaa has

been having a great time despite stiff opposition. Starting as the 26th seed, Praggnanandhaa has re-mained undefeated, be-sides besting top seed Jor-

den van Foreest and fourth-seeded compatriot SL Narayanan. His im-

pressive run has fetched him a performance rating of 2,749. He needed just a

performance of 2600 to make a GM norm.

Mosquito menace has gone beyond control due to action of Storm Water Drain dept. of Chennai Corporation by making a 4000 ft long 5 ft deep & 4ft wide network of storm water drain without outlet (SWD) holding a sheet of stagnat-ing fresh water round the year in an area of 16000 sq ft,. This serves as dengue breeding centre in 10 streets of B Sector Anna Nagar Western Extn (Ward 88 Zone 7) Ambattur Zone).

The rain water that enters SWD stag-nates there throughout the year as there is no out let and the water can neither per-colate underground due to concrete floor

nor evaporate due to top slab. But mosqui-toes can enter and leave top layer of stag-nating water through gratings of inlet chambers, for laying eggs and breeding.

But the Corporation Zonal health de-partment is taking intensive steps to pre-vent breeding of Dengue mosquitoes even in coconut shells, drinking water sumps & wells by fogging, applying a liquid in sump & sheet of oil on wells & stagnating water at regular intervals, besides sending a strong note to higher officials against stagnation of fresh water which can serve as mosquito breeding centre.

The State Govt is fighting tooth & nail to eradicate dengue mosquitoes which cause deaths daily through Dengue fever.

It is not known as to how and why the engineers of Corporation planned flow of SWDs from east to west without ascer-taining the gradients of starting points and ending point of SWD Network at the water way in Kalaivanar Nagar on wrong assumption that the level of water way is lower than SWD network to allow flow into water way from B Sector.

To add fuel to fire, Corpn ward 88 workers have not only failed to use two

channels of concrete blocks on a nullah connecting Padi to Otteri nullah through Park Road, AP Plots 13th Street and Inner Ring Road, but also let sewage of Padi into SWD network. This causes entry of sewage into drinking water sumps and houses in B sector.

Now B Sector Association has re-quested the Corporation to provide facil-ity to drain the water from SWD network to Cooum on the southern side (of B Sector) or Otteri Nullah on the eastern side which are natural water ways yet to be protected by Corporation & Revenue dept.

Teach them young. That seems to be the concept that is catching on among

various government agencies including the Fire and Rescue Services in the State. Keeping in tune with this, the personnel at the J J Nagar Fire and Rescue Station in Mogappair East re-cently conducted a practical awareness session on fire fighting and fire accident prevention for students of the Government Girls Higher Secondary School in Mogappair East.

“The school authorities had approached our Fire and Rescue

Station requesting us to conduct a camp on fire safety and prevention with the intention of equipping their girl students to handle a fire-related disaster in their respective public and domestic environment. We readily agreed as we have been doing such camps on a regular basis on the campuses of educa-tional institutions. Usually there is a demand for such live work-shops during Deepavali season as the chances of fire accident then is high. In the case of the Government Girls Higher Sec-ondary School they informed us that their curriculum also covers issues related to fire hazards,

prevention and safety. So we conducted a session for them,” explains Rajendran, Station Of-ficer, J J Nagar Fire and Rescue Station.

As many as 50 students of the Government Girls Higher Sec-ondary School and four teachers attended the training session. “We explained the basics of fire hazards including the four types of fires. Usually fire accidents are classified as ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ and ‘D’ depending on the intensity of the blaze and the potential risks in-volved. Each type of fire accident needs a different technique to handle,” adds Rajendran. The Fire and Rescue Services person-

nel taught the girls how to extinguish small fires and strategies for safe-guarding oneself when there is a blaze.

D u r i n g t h e demonstration the girls also tried their hand at extinguish-ing fires as part of the mock drill. “This gives them a hands-on experience,” says the Fire and Rescue Services Station Officer. “The idea is to enable them combat real life situations. Through our training, the girl

students would be able to safe-guard themselves and their fam-ily members should there be a fire accident at home. They will also be able to extinguish a minor blaze,” he adds.

The Chithi Vinayagar Temple at the corner of a four road junction sand-wiched between VGP Nagar and Mohanram Nagar, Mogappair is a much sought of location in this area. We did not use pam-phlets as they would nor-mally be discarded where-as the banners will remain for a long time,” adds Krishnamoorthy.

The Department of Posts in collabo-ration with UIDAI launched the Aad-haar Enrollment facility at the Anna Road Head Post Office in Chennai City Region, Tamil Nadu Circle.

This facility will be further extended to 1,434 more post offices in Tamilnadu circle in a phased manner within the next one to two months.

An official release here said already, 70 Post Offices across Tamilnadu Circle have commenced Aadhaar updating

service since July this year and 14,756 transactions have been done so far.

Banks, Mobile Service Providers, PO Savings Bank, Gas agencies require Aadhaar numbers of their customers and subscribers. Linking of Aadhaar number was also now mandatory for filing IT returns and for public distribu-tion system. Moderate coffee drink-ing is safe and three to four cups a day may have some health benefits, a study says. Researchers collected data on the impact of cof-fee on all aspects of the human body, taking into account more than 200 studies - most of which were observational.

Compared with non-

coffee drinkers, those who drank about three cups of coffee a day appeared to reduce their risk of getting heart problems or dying from them, according to the study.

The strongest benefits of coffee consumption were seen in reduced risks of liver disease, including cancer.

A co-author of the study, from the faculty of medicine at the University of Southampton, said the review could not say if cof-fee intake had made the difference.

Factors such as age, whether people smoked or not and how much exercise they took could all have had an effect.

There is a balance of risks in life, and the benefits of moderate consumption of coffee seem to outweigh the risks.

However, the UK’S Na-tional Health Services rec-ommends pregnant wom-en have no more than 200mg of caffeine a day - two mugs of instant coffee - because too much can

increase the risk of miscar-riage.

The researchers say cof-fee drinkers should stick to

“healthy coffees” - which avoid extra sugar, milk or cream, or a fatty snack on the side.

Govt. school students to be sent abroad

Students from government schools will be sent on field visits to schools abroad, said Minister for School Education. Speaking on the sidelines of an event, he said that training

modules are being prepared by experts to help students from government schools to get acquainted with educational systems abroad.

“Teams of students will be sent to Norway, the U.S., Russia and Germany. Each team will have about 25 students and Rs 3 crore has been allotted for the programme,” the Minister said.

Nethrodaya cele-brated its 15th anniversary on

Sunday. Around 300 vi-sually impaired persons from all over Tamil Nadu participated in the event. On this memorable occa-sion Nethrodaya pro-vided seed capital for 100 visually impaired fami-

lies for their self employ-ment activities to enable them to have sustainable and decent livelihood. Mr S Pandiyaraj a visu-ally impaired achiever was honored with an award by Nethrodaya for his outstanding service towards the visually im-paired persons. Similarly

Mrs Vijayakumari, N. Barath, Shashi kumar and MVM Velmurugan were honored with Neth-rodaya Award for their selfless services to em-power the visually im-paired community.

During this august occasion free Braille watches were provided

to visually impaired and magnifiers were provid-ed to many low vision students.

While addressing the visually impaired stu-dents, Hon’ble Justice, shri Rajiv Shakdher, urged them to take up legal profession and ex-pressed his dream to see

visually impaired Judges in the judiciary in the near future. Smt. Pad-malatha, a popular play-back singer entertained the gathering by singing their favorite film songs.

While it has become common for cycles, two-wheelers and cars to be abandoned on the streets of residential colonies – as reported by Mogappair Mail in the past – residents of Mogappair Eri Scheme are surprised to see an unat-tended bus remaining parked on a ground cov-ered by shrubs.

On an open plot of land opposite ‘The Banyan’, a non-governmental home for the rehabilitation of mentally challenged wom-en, on Eri Scheme Road in Mogappair, a bus belong-ing to a private party has been parked. Residents in the nearby vicinity say the vehicle has been remaining at the location for quite some days now.

“We do not know who parked this bus here and when. But going by the perpendicular position in which it has been parked, it appears the driver had consciously left the vehicle here. The door of the ve-hicle has also been secured using a chain lock as it does not have a regular door lock,” says a resident who identified himself as Panchapakesan. The re-tired employee of TVS Motors points out that wild shrub has grown cov-ering a part of the view of the bus.

people can get into the vehicle as there is no win-dow near the door. We only hope that in due

course anti-social elements don’t turn it into a den for boozing at night. Or they may even end up using it

for other undesirable ac-tivities. That would be a real nuisance for us,” chips in Panchapakesan’s friend

Ramamurthi, also a senior citizen living in the neigh-bourhood.

“I am not sure if the

vehicle has broken down by now. But it would be nice if the owner or driver could take the bus away from this location. It is a breeding ground for mos-quitoes and occasionally reptiles have been spotted taking refuge there. If the bus remains here then it will only aggravate this problem,” adds Rama-murthi. “People these days seem to have no value for money. If heavy vehicles are left unattended then anti-social elements could target it and remove the wheels and other parts over a period of time as could be seen from the condition of a whole lot of vehicles abandoned on dif-ferent roads. Hopefully the owner of the bus could see your report and act,” says the elderly citizen.
