The girl wiTh a mesmerising voiceBy N Rathi Chithra
usic transcends lin-guistic and geo-graphical boundar-ies. And with audi-ence rooting for her
across different nationali-ties, Nithyashree Venkata-ramanan, a young resident of Anna Nagar, knows this better. The teenaged girl has already charmed music lov-ers with her mesmerising voice belting out songs in 18 languages at 4,500 shows held in India and 14 other countries.
Daughter of a Carnatic vocalist, her mother initi-ated Nithyashree into the world of music at a tender age and nurtured her over the years helping her to win the hearts of the people.
Her first tryst with popular-ity came when as a ten year old girl Nithyashree par-ticipated in the widely watched ‘Super Singer’ real-ity show aired on the Tam-il private satellite television channel Vijay TV.
“That show provided me a huge break and many of friends pull my leg saying my mother left me in Vijay TV and I was born and grew up there,” quips Nithyashree during a free-wheeling chat with Mogap-pair Mail.
From then on it has been only an upwardly mobile journey for her. Music is everything to her. In fact it would be no exaggeration to say that music has be-come her lifeline. “Since all my family members were
into music in one form or the other, singing came naturally to me,” she says.
From Super Singer, Nithyashree went on to participate in the ‘Indian Idol’, which now serves as a national platform for as-piring singers to display their unique vocal cords. She came second in that edition of ‘Indian Idol’ and entered the hearts of pa-trons of the television show across the country.
The success at the show provided her the motivation to learn to sing in non-South Indian languages as well. “When I participated in the ‘Indian Idol’ show for the first time I started sing-ing in Hindi. Then gradu-ally I started learning to sing in other languages such
as Sindhi, Marwadi, Odiya and even in Arabic, French and Brazilian. Singing in foreign languages helped me to attract international audiences,” she recalls.
Nithyashree is heading to London next month to participate in a charity show organised by a non-governmental organisation.
Her quest to expand her knowledge in the world of music has led her to learn-ing the piano and she is also getting trained for voice culture. She has cut her own devotional albums and has also taken to playback singing in a few movies. “My aim is to get a doctor-ate in music and open a school for music,” she signs off.

adieu to celebrity judgeBy Our Corespndent
The Collector Nagar neigh-bourhood on Friday bid adieu to Alamelu Natarajan, the Principal District and Sessions Judge of Tirupur District, who had shot to national fame only last month when she sentenced six persons to death in connection with the horrendous day-light killing of Dalit youth Shankar who had married a girl Kausalya belonging to a dominant com-munity.
Alamelu’s fami-ly including her husband T S Nata-rajan were residents of Greenfield Apartments in Collector Nagar in Anna Nagar Western Extension. The 55-year-old judge had con-tracted a lung infection with suspected symptoms of pneumo-nia and was admitted to a hospi-tal in Coimbatore where she did not respond to treatment and died
on Thursday. Her body was brought to her
Collector Nagar residence in Chennai and the last rites were performed by family members on Friday amidst a pall of gloom that had befallen the neighbourhood.
“She was an ex-tremely nice person and used to interact with us well when-ever she came to Chennai. Only last month we were all happy that she had bo ld ly awarded death penalty to six persons including Kausalya’s father and also sentenced the girl’s mother to imprisonment. We
were told that this was the first case of honour killing in the country in which half-a-dozen persons were awarded capital punishment. We are shocked to learn that Alamelu is no more just a month after making the country turn towards Tamil Nadu for her sending out a strong message to
those who believe in the domi-nance of one caste over another,” said a resident of Greenfield Apartment requesting anonymity.
“We heard that she was hospi-talised on Tuesday last and never thought her condition would de-teriorate so quickly that she is no longer in our midst today,” said a relative of hers, who was in tears.
Relatives said Alamelu was born in Coimbatore and pursued law degree before enrolling in the Tiruchi bar. In July 1991, she jo ined judic ia l ser vice in Kancheepuram as a District Munsif and three years ago taken over a Principal District Judge in Tirupur.
“The Shankar killing had brought shame to Tamil Nadu and his brutal murder was cap-tured on CCTV. Alamelu won the hearts of many by conducting the trial in a fair manner and deliver-ing justice in the case in a short period. We were told that she was also due to be named as a judge of the Madras High Court short-ly but sadly fate had other plans for her,” said the relative.
National Prosthodontic day was observed on Jan 22 at the Government Stanley Hospital. To create awareness a rally and specialised treatment was delivered under the guidance of Dr S Ponnambala Namasivayam, Dean and dental team comprising Dr K Bakyalakshmi, Dr G Gomathi, Dr Ramkumar, Dr D Karthikeyan, Dr. T Kavitha and Dr Anitha.
Patients with carcinoma and fungal infection of the jaw was surgically treated by removal of Maxilla and many such related ailments were treated. Dr Ramkumar can be contacted at 98405 71992.

Traffic flow on the Poonamallee High Road on the Madu-
ravoyal-Koyambedu Fly-over stretch has been ad-versely affected due to nu-merous potholes on either side of the roads. The pot-holes have slowed down vehicular movement on the highway delaying journeys for office-goers and long distance bus commuters for several months now.
As it is the road width on this busy stretch has been narrowed after giant pillars were erected in the middle of the road for the Chennai Port-Maduravoy-al Expressway project, work on which has been suspended for the past over five years (though attempts are on to revive it). The large potholes caused by the washout of blue metal on the tarred road have made it worse for drivers of vehicles.
“A highway ride is sup-posed to be smooth. But this stretch of the Poona-mallee High Road is so bad that you get a feeling as if you are driving on an inte-rior rural road. I have been riding through these large potholes for several months now and have not come across the Highway De-partment carrying out any repairs to at least patch up the spots where blue metal has been washed away in rains,” complained Suren-dran, who regularly drives from Nolambur to his workplace in Aminjikarai through this road.
The Maduravoyal-Koy-ambedu flyover stretch is used not just for those com-muting within the city but also long distance travellers headed to Sriperumbudur, Tiruvallur, Kancheep-uram, Vellore and Bengal-uru. “Due to the bumpy ride that we experience on this part of the high road, our travel time increases.
Ordinarily this stretch should take about 10 min-utes to zip past even while accounting for the traffic and the presence of heavy vehicles. However, due to the potholes drivers are forced to slow down and on an average it takes over 20 minutes to cover this stretch of about two kilo-metres,” pointed out Sri-hari, who takes a company bus to a car factory in Irungattukottai on week-days.
“The wear and tear of vehicles is also very high due to this. While fre-quent ly press ing the clutches guzzles fuel – which is already expensive – the regular bumpy drive reduces the life of not just the tyre but also loosens some parts forcing us to visit the automobile me-chanic every now and then,” lamented Thiruna-vukkarasu, who owns two water tanker lorries to fetch water from Tiruvallur and

The neighbourhood of A F Block on 11th Main Road in Anna Nagar West was jolted this past week on hearing the news of the passing away of a septua-genarian woman, who had fallen victim to vishing – a cyber crime. The incident has also once again brought into focus on the need to educate people on safe banking practices.
The 71-year-old woman Jayalakshmi died unable to withstand the shock of having lost Rs 90,000 from her bank account to online fraudsters. Jayalakshmi is the second senior citizen in the Anna Nagar neigh-bourhood to fall victim to vishing in less than a year now. In March last year, Mogappair Mail had writ-ten about how an elderly citizen and resident of an apartment on Padikuppam
Road was tricked into shar-ing his bank account, Aad-haar card and mobile phone details to an online fraudster and in the process had ended up losing over Rs 1.90 lakh from the State Bank of India’s Anna Nagar West Branch.
According to Jayalak-shmi’s neighbours, she was leading a quiet life with her husband. She had received a call from a person claim-ing to be a staff of the State
Bank of India asking her to share details of her Aad-haar card number and a One Time Password (OTP) sent to her mobile phone. The moment she parted with the details, the fraud-ster used it to withdraw Rs 90,000 from her account, which she maintained in the bank.
“When she subsequent-ly received a call from the branch where she main-tained her account to verify
if she had made online transactions, she was taken aback and filed a complaint with the Thirumangalam Police Station. But she never recovered from the shock of losing her hard earned money and died the next day,” a relative of her said. The manner in which Jayalakshmi was cheated bore striking resemblance to the modus operandi used to defraud the resi-dent of Padikuppam Road
last year.“Only awareness and
caution will ensure that such incidents are not re-peated. People must realise that they should never part with any OTP number or Aadhaar card details to strangers or to callers. Our advice is that people should refuse to give the details even if the person who is calling on the telephone claims to represent the Reserve Bank of India.

Rail passengers at Chennai Egmore and Cen-tral need not have to de-pend on autorickshaws and taxi drivers soon. Both the stations are set to be connected with Metro rail. Trial run on the 2.5 km stretch from Nehru Park to Chennai Central was conducted on Jan 26.
The stretch between Nehru Park and Chennai Central which is likely to open by March end this year will help provide im-portant links for passen-
gers not only to Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus, but also to Koyambedu and Chennai Airport.
The trial run was un-dertaken on completion of track and overhead electri-fication works. It is likely that the stretch will be evaluated and will get the green signal for operation of trains. This would mean that the entire 19-km Green line from St Thom-as Mount to Nehru Park would link Central Sta-tion, via Egmore.
Along with the stretch, Chennai Metro will also simultaneously open the four-km stretch from AG-DMS to Little Mount. This would mean that the Blue Line (Corridor-1) will have nearly 13-km stretch under operation by the end of this financial year.
The stretch from DMS to Saidapet comprises four stations - Saidapet, Nan-danam, Teynampet and AG-DMS. Chennai Metro hopes that once the four-km underground stretch is opened, it would boost the ridership significantly and give an option for passen-gers to skip the busy Anna Salai stretch.
The entire stretch is a commercial area and is dotted with government offices, colleges, hotels, malls and shopping cen-tres. It would also connect Annanagar with DMS and DMS with Airport, said officials.
