The Art Institute of Chicago Museum Studies, published twice annually, presents

articles on the collections and history of the Art

Institute. This special issue focuses on the extraordinary

works of modern and contemporary art acquired from

Lannan Foundation in 1997. Ranging in date from 1944

to 1995, and in medium from painting and sculpture to

photography and video installation, these pieces from the

Lannan Collection have expanded the Art Institute's

significant holdings of contemporary art in new, exciting

directions. This issue features entries, accompanied

by full-page, color plates, on thirty-five works by artists

including Chuck Close, Felix Gonzalez-Torres, Bruce

Nauman, Gerhard Richter, Kiki Smith, and Clyfford Still.

An introductory essay explores the collection's history,

offering an illuminating glimpse into the Life of collector

and businessman Joseph Patrick Lannan, Sr., and

tracing the activities of the still-vital family foundation

he founded in 1960. Including a complete, illustrated

checklist of the Art Institute's Lannan acquisitions, this

issue introduces readers to an important collection

of contemporary art, and tells a remarkable story of

American cultural philanthropy.
