IL SISTEMA CLIMATICO
Definizione di Sistema Climatico:
GARP (Global Atmosphere Research Programme of the W MO) 1975:
“as being composed of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, c ryosphere, land surface and biosphere”
FCCC (Framework Convention on Climate Change, UN) 1 992:
“the totality of the atmosphere, hydrosphere, biosph ere and geosphere and their interactions”
The two definitions are very similar, but the empha sis on the interactions has increased since 1975, both in the definition an d in the scientific literature

Simple climate models
Energy Balance Models (EMB):(e.g. Budyko 1969, Sellers 1969)
Modelling the Earth climate (predict the surface temperature) in terms of its global energy balance.
They are zero- or one-dimensional models mostly used for sensitivity studies of the climate system to investigate the possibility of alternative stable climatic states for the Earth (geological time-scales climatic changes)
Fi(T)= transfer of energy through latitude zones
Radiative-convective(RC) climate models(e.g. Manabe and Strickler 1964)
1-D models (vertical).Resolve many layers in the atmosphere and seek to compute atmospheric and surface temperature.
Can be used for sensitivity tests and offer the opportunity to incorporate a complex radiation treatment

SUB-GRID COMPONENTS
Model’s do not have enough resolution to resolve a number of physical processes.
Many of these processes act at scales of 1-10 km or even smaller.
So they are represented in terms of the large-scale flow (what gets simulated).

MODELLI DEL CLIMA
Mathematical equations that represent the physicalcharacteristics and processes are entered for each box
MODELLI DEL CLIMA
Equations are converted to computer code and climate variables are set
MODELLI DEL CLIMA
A supercomputer solves all the equations, passing results to neighboring boxes and calculating the next set of initial conditions
