When creating a piece of theater, one sees revealed through the deep examination and close scrutiny of the rehearsal process that the script at hand (which on first blush appeared immaculate), contains holes, flaws and leaps of logic. This often requires patching by the individual inspiration of the actors and creative team (as well as the willingness of the audience to “go with it”); a situation which comes with the territory of

our beautifully imperfect art form.

Not so with Next to Normal. I had an absolutely celebratory experience last winter as an audience member of the Broadway production, which had us leaping to our feet and applauding even before the curtain call. Through our rehearsal process, I’ve developed an even greater appreciation for the marvelous craft with which this play is constructed – lean dialogue, smart lyrics and a pulsating rock score that together offer a near-perfect combination of incredibly theatrical entertainment and an important message.

It’s a difficult equation to get right, and the creators absolutely nailed it – there’s nothing extraneous here, no moment outstays its welcome, and the book and score work brilliantly in partnership to advance the narrative. And what a narrative it is! Deceptively simple, Next To Normal is a modern American story about a family that appears solid, stable and confident on the surface. But upon closer examination, it’s revealed to be a flawed, fallible, beautifully- imperfect creation bound together with love, on the verge of fracturing beyond repair, under the influence of a sadly all-too-universal concern: mental illness, the stigma surrounding it for the afflicted, and the impact on the lives of the loved ones who share that burden. According to the National Alliance of Mental Illness, one in four American adults experience a mental health disorder in any given year.

My deep desire as you participate in our production of Next to Normal is that you’re as moved as I was in New York and as we all have been while working on this beautiful, vital piece of theater – but also that you’re educated at the same time; that you’re uplifted from the experience and compelled to have a further conversation, or to get involved, to seek help yourself, or to offer help to someone you know. But, above all, it is my fervent desire that afflicted individuals realize that help is available – and therefore that there is hope and “light.”

Underneath the powerful songs of Next to Normal is a frighteningly real story of mental illness that is at once daunting and hopeful. We know that many families grapple with the same illness that the fictitious family of this play does. As difficult as it can be to talk about these issues, I am delighted that with this production, The Rep, along with the help of a variety of partners, will offer our audiences and the community at large many opportunities to further engage in the play and the issues it raises.

We couldn’t be more pleased that Next to Normal is sponsored by Rogers Memorial Hospital, Wisconsin’s largest not-for-profit behavioral health hospital. They have served as an important resource for our cast in their preparation for the production. Kubly Foundation helps individuals affected by depression by increasing public awareness of the disease, eliminating the stigma associated with it, supporting suicide prevention and promoting improved access to quality mental health resources. They have helped to create a Takeaway Resource piece available in the theater lobby as well as coordinated the lobby Resource Table. Please make a point to stop by the Resource Table at intermission or after the show to learn more. If you’ve noticed the magnificent art exhibit throughout the Quadracci Powerhouse lobby, the Grand Avenue Club, our lead community partner, has loaned us this for the run of Next to Normal. The Grand Avenue Club offers adults who experience mental illness an array of opportunities throughout the year. Program participants are members of a community with a place to come, have meaningful work and relationships. They have also served as a strong advisory group to The Rep for this production.

We have ten additional Community Participants: Aurora Behavioral Health Services, Behavioral Health – Division of Milwaukee County, Columbia – St. Mary’s, Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare, Mental Health America, National Alliance on Mental Illness, Jewish Family Services, Lutheran Social Service, Catholic Social Services and the Balanced Mind Foundation, who are also working with us to explore the issues raised by Next to Normal.

With this production, as with many of our upcoming productions, The Rep is committed to further our community engagement initiatives not only with the work that you will see on our stages, but in expanding the conversation with the issues and ideas that our creative work explores. Jarrod Emick won the Tony, Drama Desk and Theatre World Award for his

portrayal of slugger Joe Hardy in the Broadway Revival of Damn Yankees. Danny Henning, Henry

This is Danny’s second season with Milwaukee Repertory Theater, having

been seen last year as Victor in Cabaret. Other credits include four seasons with Great Lakes Theater: Cabaret (Bobby); The Taming of the Shrew (Biondello); Drood (Deputy); Twelfth Night (Valentine) and three seasons of A Christmas Carol. Two seasons with Idaho Shakespeare Festival: Cabaret (Bobby); The Taming of the Shrew (Biondello); Drood (Deputy); Twelfth Night (Valentine) and The Comedy of Errors (Ensemble). Other various credits include: Chess (Freddie) at Playhouse Square; The Producers (Leo Bloom); West Side Story (Tony); All Shook Up (Dean Hyde) at Timber Lake Playhouse and 110 in the Shade (Jimmie Curry) at Kalliope Stage. Sarah Litzsinger, Diana Goodman

Sarah Litzsinger holds the distinction of being Broadway’s longest running

Belle in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast. She was also seen on Broadway in: Marilyn, an American Fable (Broadway debut); Oliver! The Revival (Bet) starring Ron Moody and Patti Lupone; Les Miserables (Eponine/Cosette) and originated the role of Madeleine in Michel LeGrand’s Amour. Sarah also played Eva Peron in the 25th anniversary tour of Evita, directed by Hal Prince and Larry Fuller and played The Narrator opposite Donny Osmond in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

Some of her other credits include: A Year with Frog and Toad (Bird/Mouse) at Minneapolis Children’s Theatre Company and Tick, Tick . . . Boom! (Susan), Falsettos (Cordelia) and The Last Five Years (Cathy), all at George Street Playhouse. Sarah also won the 2007 Breakout Award at the HBO Aspen Comedy Festival for her duo comedy act and performed at the TBS Comedy Festival at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas in 2008.

Laurie Veldheer, Natalie Goodman

Laurie Veldheer is beyond excited to be a part of this incredible show! Originally

from Grand Rapids, MI, Laurie now resides in New York City. Her past credits include: Disney’s Newsies! (Hannah) and Hairspray (Brenda) at the Paper Mill Playhouse, Hairspray National Tour (Brenda) and My One and Only (Swing) at the Goodspeed Opera House. Laurie is a proud member of AEA and a graduate of Penn State University with a BFA in Musical Theatre. Endless love, gratitude and thanks to God my Father, my AMAZING family and friends and The Mine. Kevin Vortmann, Dan Goodman

Kevin Vortmann appeared on Broadway in the Tony-nominated revival of A

Little Night Music and was a standby for the title role in the Roundabout Theatre Company’s Off-Broadway production of Death Takes a Holiday. Brian Yorkey, Playwright

Brian received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as the 2009 Tony Award for Best Score, for Next to Normal. Brian was also nominated for the Tony Award for Best Book of a Musical for Next to Normal, and his work on the show earned him the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Score. Theater credits include

Making Tracks, which has played Off-Broadway and regionally, the musical adaptation of Ang Lee’s The Wedding Banquet and the country musical Play It By Heart. Film and TV projects in development include the features Time After Time for Universal, Love Undercover for Pandemonium Films and Overture, Fashion Show for Parkes/MacDonald and Paramount and Chase for Anonymous Content and Rosenzweig Films. He has directed Off-Broadway and regionally, and for seven years was Associate Artistic Director at Village Theatre in Washington state, one of the nation’s leading producers of new musicals. He is a graduate of Columbia University, where he was Artistic Director of the Varsity Show, an alumnus of the BMI/Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop and a proud member of the Dramatists Guild and the WGA.

Tom Kitts, Music

Tom received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, as well as two Tony Awards for Best Score and Best Orchestrations (with Michael Starobin), for Next to Normal. His music for Next to Normal also received the 2009 Frederick Loewe Award for Dramatic Composition and an Outer Critics Circle Award for Best New Score. Tom is responsible for the music supervision, arrangements and orchestrations for Green Day’s American Idiot on Broadway, and was also the string arranger on their most recent album, 21st Century Breakdown. Tom is also the composer of High Fidelity (Broadway), From Up Here (MTC) and The Retributionists (Playwrights Horizons). As a musical director, conductor, arranger and orchestrator for Broadway, Off-Broadway and beyond, credits include 13, Debbie Does Dallas, Everyday Rapture, Hair, Laugh Whore and Urban Cowboy. He is the proud leader of the Tom Kitt Band (www.tomkittband.com) whose songs have been featured in film and TV.

Mark Clements, Director

Mark Clements began his tenure as The Rep’s Artistic Director with the 2010/11

season. He is an award-winning international theater director whose work has appeared in over 100 major theaters throughout Europe and the United States. Recent productions include: Death of a Salesman, Bombshells and Cabaret at The Rep; Oliver!, Born Yesterday, Great Expectations and Les Miserables (2008 Barrymore Award – Best Production of a Musical) and Of Mice and Men (2007 Barrymore Award – Best Director and Best Production of a Play), all for Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia; The Milliner (Off-Broadway, World Premiere), CSC, New York; My Fair Lady, Copenhagen; The Browning Version (Barclays/TMA Regional Theatre Award) at Derby Playhouse and Blunt Speaking (World Premiere), Chichester Festival Theatre U.K. and Lucille Lortel Theatre, New York both starring Corin Redgrave. Additionally, Mark served as Artistic Director of the award-winning Derby Playhouse in the U.K. from 1992 to 2002, where he produced over 100 productions, directed 47, including nine transfers to London’s West End and many U.K. national tours and international collaborations with leading companies in Europe and the U.S. He serves on the National Advisory Board for the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program at Ten Chimneys.

Dan Kazemi, Musical Director

Dan Kazemi is a Philadelphia-based composer, actor, music director and educator, and was Musical Director for The Rep’s production of Cabaret last season. He graduated from Haverford College with a B.A. in Music Composition and a Theater minor. In Philadelphia, Dan musically directed Tick, Tick . . . Boom!, Austentations, the PhillyRocks! concerts, The World Goes Round (Barrymore nomination), Reefer Madness, Little Shop of Horrors, Rooms and The Great American Trailer Park Musical for 11th Hour Theatre Company. He also garnered a Helen Hayes Nomination for his work on the D.C. premiere of The Musical of Musicals: The Musical, a Barrymore Nomination for The Flea and the Professor (Arden Theatre Company), and received a Barrymore Award for 11th Hour’s Avenue X. At the Walnut Street Theatre, Dan musically directed, arranged and performed in The Irish and How They Got That Way (Two Barrymore Nominations). Dan’s music has been performed at the Cirque de Demain in Paris, at the A.W.A.R.D. Show Philadelphia, and in 213 Productions collaborations, Untitled Project #213 and Your Attention Please! Dan is also the composer of a new musical, The Tapioca Miracle (thetapiocamiracle.com).



Michael Pink, Additional Musical Staging

Michael Pink is an international choreographer and teacher,

and has been Artistic Director of the Milwaukee Ballet since December 2002. During that time, he has established himself as a prominent member of the Milwaukee arts community. His dramatic productions of Romeo & Juliet, The Nutcracker, Swan Lake, Dracula, Don Quixote, Giselle 1943, The Sleeping Beauty, Esmeralda, Cinderella and Peter Pan have been hailed as: “Classical ballet for the 21st century.” His other credits include choreography for stage, screen and television. He was nominated for a West End Theatre Award in 1980. His work is currently in the repertoire of the Royal New Zealand, Boston, Colorado, Atlanta and Norwegian National ballet companies. He trained with the Royal Ballet, dancing with English National Ballet from 1975 to1985. He worked alongside Christopher Gable as Associate Artistic Director of the Northern Ballet Theatre and was a founding director of Ballet Central in London from 1986 to 1998. Rudolf Nureyev invited him to work at the Paris Opera and La Scala Milan. Michael is delighted to be part of Mark Clements’ creative team once again.

Todd Edward Ivins, Scenic Designer

Todd Ivins tells stories through design. He is happy to return to Milwaukee Rep where he last designed scenery and costumes for Cabaret. Alex has been a Draper in The Rep’s Costume Shop for the past 15 seasons. He was Rep Company Member of the Year for the 2004/05 season. Dawn Helsing Wolters, Managing Director

Dawn Helsing Wolters joined Milwaukee

Repertory Theater as Managing Director in 2009. She currently serves as President of Milwaukee Arts Partners, the Bridge Committee for the Sharon Lynne Wilson Center for the Arts, the National Advisory Board for the Lunt-Fontanne Fellowship Program at Ten Chimneys and the Advisory Board for the Chicago-based Stillpoint Theater Collective. Dawn came to Milwaukee from Chicago, where she was Executive Director of Court Theatre from 2005 to 2009. While in Chicago, Dawn served on the board of The League of Chicago Theatres, chairing its Nominating Committee and consulting in leadership development, capacity building and fundraising. She also served on the Chicago 2016 Olympic Arts and Culture Advisory Group. As a founding board member of the Hyde Park Cultural Alliance, she helped lead the group’s transition to an independent not-for-profit organization, chairing its Governance Committee. Dawn served as Director of Development at Center Stage in Baltimore, and held marketing and public relations positions at Center Stage and Arena Stage in Washington, D.C. While completing her MFA in Theatre Management at Yale School of Drama, she was Associate Managing Director of Yale Repertory Theatre and Managing Director of the Summer Cabaret. Dawn has served in an advisory capacity for the National Endowment for the Arts, the Massachusetts Cultural Commission, and The University of Chicago’s Graham School of General Studies and for Goucher College’s graduate Arts Administration program and been a guest lecturer and panelist at colleges and universities.

Laura F. Wendt, Stage Manager

Rebecca Lindsey, Assistant Stage Manager

Becca makes her return to Milwaukee Rep with this

project, having completed her apprenticeship here in 2007. Favorite past credits at The Rep include Half Life and The Nerd in the Stiemke Theater, A Christmas Carol in the Pabst Theater and Tour Managing both Guys on Ice and The Bachelors throughout Wisconsin. Becca is a stage manager at American Players Theatre, where recent favorites have been Of Mice and Men up the hill and the world premiere of The Gift of the Magi in the Touchstone. She has also stage managed Utah Shakespeare Festival’s educational tour for the past three winters.

While at UCF, Josh co-founded Relevant Theatrics Theatre Company, a small theater project in Orlando where he worked as Artistic Director and Co-Producer. Ethan Bender, Bass

Ethan Bender has been a professional musician in the Midwest region for the past twenty years. Ethan is well known in the Milwaukee area for his stints with Streetlife, Christopher’s Project and Paul Cebar & The Milwaukeeans. Ethan has also performed with Clark Terry, James Williams, Rob McConnell, Red Skelton, Jeff Lorber and The Sax Pack. Currently Mr. Bender is an active, freelance musician in the Milwaukee and Chicago area. He also teaches in the Jazz Studies Program at Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra, and is the bassist in the Donna Woodall Group. Ethan currently lives in Milwaukee with his wife, vocalist Donna Woodall Bender, and his two daughters, Celia and Rachel.

Scott Cook, Cello

Scott Cook has had the opportunity to teach at various levels in an array of environments. At the collegiate level, Scott has held positions at UW-Milwaukee, Converse College, Carroll University, Alverno College and Limestone College. At the pre-college level, he has worked at The String Academy of Wisconsin at UWM, Converse College and the Greenville County Schools in South Carolina. Scott is the Artistic Director of the Swannanoa Chamber Music Festival Workshop and the director of the annual international teaching workshop, Teaching Cello to Children at the String Academy of Wisconsin. As a performer, he was the principal cellist of the Greenville (SC), Waukesha and Racine Symphonies. He was also a frequent recitalist appearing at the Swannanoa Music Festival, Chamber Music Milwaukee, Saint James and Wilson Center recital series as well as cellist with the AIMS Festival in Graz, Austria. Currently he is a member of the Skylight Opera Theatre orchestra. He has made numerous recordings with Brett Records and for Hal Leonard.

Bob Monagle, Guitar

Bob has been working as a guitarist in the Milwaukee area music scene for the past 30 years as both a leader and a sideman. He has been the guitarist for several national and regional theater productions including Rent, Hairspray, Jacques Brel, The Last Five Years, Little Shop of Horrors and several others. Bob is also co-owner of a local recording studio/post production business (Tanner-Monagle) where he maintains a busy career as a session guitarist playing on local and national television and radio commercials.

Patrick Morrow, Percussion/Keyboards

Patrick is glad to be back at The Rep after drumming for Cabaret last season. In addition to The Rep, Patrick has provided percussive accompaniment for many local theaters including the Fireside Theatre, First Stage Children’s

Theater and Milwaukee Chamber Theatre. Patrick spent a great deal of 2009 and 2010 touring the U.S. and Canada with Little House on the Prairie: The Musical starring television actress, Melissa Gilbert. Off stage, Patrick can be found jaunting around the globe with rock and roll combos including Eddie Clendening & The Blue Ribbon Boys, Kim Lenz & The Jaguars, Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys and The Two Timin’ Four.

Pamela Simmons, Violin

Pamela is a Concertmaster for Skylight Opera Theatre and Associate Concertmaster of the Festival City Symphony. She performs regularly with the Milwaukee Ballet Orchestra and Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra, and served as Concertmaster of the Racine Symphony Orchestra, Associate Concertmaster of the Waukesha Symphony Orchestra, the Green Bay Symphony and in the violin section for the Des Moines Metro Opera Orchestra. Pamela has performed with several Broadway touring productions including Chicago, The Sound of Music and West Side Story, and with artists including Rosemary Clooney, Michael Feinstein, Peter Gabriel, Maureen McGovern, Frank Sinatra, Jr. and Mannheim Steamroller.

Deaf or Hard of Hearing Services: The Quadracci Powerhouse (QP) and the Stiemke Studio are equipped with an infrared listening system which ensures clarity of sound from any seat in the house. Performances are offered in American Sign Language for a Thursday evening of all QP productions and one Sunday matinee for all Stiemke Studio productions. We also offer a Captioned Theater performance during the last Sunday matinee performance of all QP productions. Please call The Rep Ticket Office at 414-224-9490 for more information. Blind or Low Vision Services: Large print programs are available in the Quadracci Powerhouse and Stiemke Studio from any usher. Every Rep production has one audio-described performance.
