Granny, can Ilive with you? Most parents agree that bringingup kids is quite a challenge.Everything changes so quicklyand you can soon lose faceif you’re not up-to-date withthe latest fads, phones andfashions. Imagine then whatit’s like when grandparentssuddenly become responsiblefor their grandchildren.

Fifty or sixty years ago, whentoday’s grandparents wereyoung, there were only three TVchannels, personal computersdidn’t exist and a tablet wassomething you got from thedoctor. Today, there are over 60channels on Freeview, well overa thousand on Sky and millionsof pages on the World Wide Weband that’s before you think ofFacebook, Twitter and Instagram!

Grandparents end up lookingafter their grandchildren for awide variety of reasons, including

bereavement or when a parentjust can’t cope. Sometimes, there are problems with drugs, alcohol, neglect or even abuse.

Whenever grandparents startlooking after their grandchildren, they need to learn fast. Theyneed advice and guidance frompeople who’ve faced a similarsituation. Many have turned toour local Milton Keynes basedKinship Group, which providessupport to Grandparents andto other Kinship who’ve takenon ‘parental’ responsibilityfor a child or children.

Founded in 2006, with just acouple of Grandparents, overthe years the group has grownand has attracted a number ofspeakers. No subject has beenleft unaddressed - discussionshave included hormones, binge drinking and exclusion.
