We engage in conversation with other Christian groups as well as with non- Christian faith assemblies. We think thoroughly, listen well to each other, and speak carefully about issues that are front-and-center in our societal conversation. So I'm excited about the time we'll be taking in the spring, and maybe through the summer & into fall, to reflect together theologically and faith-fully about some potential hot-button issues that face our society these days. Among other things, we'll be taking a look at some of the Social Statements* and some of the Social Messages* that have been published by the ELCA. But perhaps the conversation I'm most looking forward to will happen the first or second Sunday of March, when a representative from the Multicultural Mosaic Foundation will give a presentation and share conversation about Islam. As you probably are aware, this ancient faith tradition (which, like Christianity and Judaism, traces it's lineage back to Abraham) is not well understood in our society. I know that every time I've learned something about another faith tradition, I am able to more clearly understand my own tradition, and so my faith is strengthened. …….continued on page 2

Mission Statement

Holy Love Evangelical Lutheran Church is

committed to proclaiming and living the Good News

of God's love in Jesus Christ as we gather for worship and study and scatter for witness and service to our

neighbors.

People of God at Holy Love,

I'm excited about the new year. There are any number of different things that I hope will happen in 2016 which will give me great joy. I'm excited about the work our congregation is engaged in; I'm excited about the work that our council will be taking up; I'm excited that I get to work with a fantastic and tremendously capable staff. And that's just a sample of what I'm excited about at Holy Love ... not to mention those things that are exciting in my personal life (I may or may not end up with a new bike).

One thing I'm really excited about some of the conversations we get to have within our church community this year. See, I've been hearing for just about my entire life that we as followers of Jesus are called to express our faith outside of the church building and outside of the church community. I've heard for most of my life that the faith we express within the confines of our community (in worship & study & work & drinking coffee together) is to be shared with those who aren't part of our community as well.

As I got to know our church (the ELCA) more and more as an adult-aged person, I've come to recognize that we as a denomination really do this pretty well. We engage in relief work on behalf of those who need a little help in this country and around the world. We engage in conversation with other Christian groups as well as with non-Christian faith assemblies.

…..continued from page 1

Obviously this isn't the only topic we'll engage in conversation about as we anticipate a presidential election later in the year, but for right now it's the one I'm most excited about.

If there's something you're really interested in, and think it would be an appropriate topic for Adult Education, let me know.

I feel blessed to be part of this fantastic congregation; thank you for continuing to allow me to serve as your pastor.

friendly environment with good people? That, essentially, is "Social Networking" at Holy Love - the opportunity to sit and chat with the pastor and other members of our community in a casual setting. The Next Social Networking Dates are:

Chambers)

Theology Pub

What: Pr. Matthew will lead a theology discussion with the group and their beverage and pizza of choice.

When: Thurs. 1/21, 6 - 7:30pm Where: Lubo’s Pizza 15352 E. Ida Dr. (Parker/Orchard)

Service Opportunity Ronald McDonald House

Help us bring a smile to the residents of the Ronald McDonald House by volunteering to prepare and serve breakfast on February 6th. The families and patients at the house are away from their homes and dealing with stressful situations. By providing a meal for them we are helping, even if only in a small way. We will set up, cook, clean up, and visit with the residents during the meal. There is nothing for you to bring but your smile and willingness to serve.

We need to arrive at the house between 7:30 AM and 8:00 AM. Volunteers can go directly to the house which is located at 932 Potomac Circle, Aurora, 80011(near I-225 and 6th Ave). Because we are in flu season volunteers need to be 13 years of age or older.

There is a sign up sheet in the narthex. Feel free to call Peggy at 303-693-1802 if you have questions.

Thank you...

...to those of you who provided cookies for after Advent Wednesday Evening Prayer;

...to those of you who put up the Christmas tree in the sanctuary

(and helped take it down);

...to the many families who read the Advent litany and lit the Advent candles during the season thru Christmas Eve;

...to everyone who helped the children tell the Christmas story during their Sunday school program;

...to the Chancel Choir, conductor Nathan Jones and harpist Ann Marie Liss for "A Ceremony of Carols" cantata.

What an amazing Advent/Christmas season! You are so appreciated!

A big thank you to the congregation for your gift to me as a pianist/organist of a little indoor

3-tier water fountain. It was totally unexpected but greatly appreciated. I have a great love of

music and consider it an honor to be able to con-tribute to the musical portion of worship services

at Holy Love. I truly believe music gives us an important and necessary way to express our faith

and give our praises to God.

To everyone at Holy Love --

Thank you to everyone who brought treats and

cards to the office during this season of Advent!

Thank you so very much for your lovely Christmas Card and end of year financial gift to each of us.

It was all greatly appreciated. Thank you for let-

ting us serve you as your pastor, faith formation director and office manager here at Holy Love.

“BECAUSE OF YOU” shared by Roger Collins, Treasurer

“We tend to forget that happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting something we don’t have,

but rather of recognizing and appreciating what we do have.” Frederick Koenig

Here it is December and I must write my part of the newsletter before the year has ended and yet the Finance Team must look ahead in our planning for the upcoming year by creating a proposed budget. Each team represented by a council member must plan and look ahead in planning goals and opportunities during the upcoming 12 months. Reviewing and discussing what activities and expenses are critical to our church and what can we do to honor our goal as well as where can we save money and still operate efficiently becomes the challenge we face. Because of your planned contributions as determined by your annual pledges, we try to predict and establish budgets that will continue to keep our church strong, however we need you. Your anticipated contributions effectively help our church continue on the path of God’s choosing. That is why your participation in ways that you are able are so critical to HOLY LOVE. Depositing your contributions fill our bank with happiness in the bank account of Holy Love. A 92 year old petite, well-poised and proud lady, who is fully dressed each morning by eight o’clock, with her hair fashionably combed and makeup perfectly applied, even though she is legally blind, moved to a nursing home. Her husband of 70 years had recently passed away, making the move necessary. After many hours of waiting patiently in the lobby of the nursing home, she smiled sweetly when told her room was ready. As she maneuvered her walker to the elevator, she was provided a visual description of her tiny room, including the eyelet sheets that had been hung on her window. “I love it”, she stated with the enthusiasm of an eight-year-old having just been presented with a new puppy. “Mrs. Jones, you haven’t seen the room…just wait.” “That doesn’t have anything to do with it;” she replied. “Happiness is something you decide on ahead of time. Whether I like my room or not doesn’t depend on how the furniture is arranged; it’s how I arrange my mind. I already decided to love it. It’s a decision I make every morning when I wake up. I have a choice: I can spend the day in bed recounting the difficulty I have with the parts of my body that no longer work, or get out of bed and be thankful for the ones that do work. Each day is a gift and as long as my eyes “open” I’ll focus on the new day and all the happy memories I’ve stored away, just for this time in my life.” She went on to explain, “Old age is like a bank account-you withdraw from what you’ve put in to the account. So, my advice to you would be to deposit a lot of happiness in the bank account of memories. Part of life’s happiness comes from having a place to worship and share in the memories of God’s teachings. A place to pray, a place to share friends, a place to help one another and a place to feel the comfort of God’s love. That to me is another reason for attending church. YOU make Holy Love possible by being a part of our church family.

SCHOOL NEWS

By Mary Stephenson, Director

I guess ‘Happy New Year’ is the message to start off with! WOW! WOW! I can’t believe 2016 has arrived. When we bid Merry Christmas to fami-lies the sound of 2016 sounded so very far away………………………..not so! Well, back track to the month of December and activities. Besides all the preparations for Christmas Worship Programs, a lot of learning went on. There was a new letter to learn each week, a new number, color days in some classes and many, many different crafts. The days all revolved around learning new songs for the programs and making special gifts/cards for their parents. All in all De-cember was a very full month of activities and re-hearsals and excitement! The Staff was treated to a delicious lunch with honey-baked ham and all the trimmings on December 4th. A great BIG thank you goes out to Heather Lasinski for taking charge and to Colby We-ber for helping her set it all up. We enjoyed the ham for several lunches so it went a very long way! Other parents contributed to the meal and we cer-tainly felt the love with each bite!!! We held our annual Secret Santa Shop which allows the children an opportunity to ‘shop’ for their special family members. We were over-whelmed with the amount of gifts and items re-quested from our families. Thank you to Megan Kulp, Colby Weber, Lisa Bittinger and Radhika Mad-dali for their help in sorting and organizing the set-up. Megan was here each session to help train and inform parent volunteers just how to help each child. The children were so excited to pick out and wrap their special gifts. Thank you to all those vol-unteers who made this such a success! We enjoyed worship with Pastor Matthew. Thank you for sharing the story of the Shepherds and the visit from the Angels announcing the birth of Jesus. We always look forward to your message and special time with us. Little did we know there would be snow the last week before we went on Christmas break! And wouldn’t you know it would land on a Tues-day………..which meant our children who come that

day missed having their classroom Christmas party. But safety was worth the missing party day. I be-lieve everyone—including CDOT didn’t expect what we ended up with. Also missing that day was final dress rehearsal for the children in preparing for our Thursday program. Life goes on………………………………… We managed to have classroom parties with the M-W-F classes and they all went well. The par-ents who planned and helped had some very good ideas for crafts, snacks and games. We are so blessed to have the wonderful families we have. Their support is greatly appreciated. Then came the Christmas Worship Pro-grams. Of course we had many days of rehearsals prior to the week of programs (excluding our snow day). The programs always revolve around the Christmas Story of Jesus birth. Our children did a wonderful job singing to the many families and guests. Children in the Preschool and M-W-F Pre-K classes are the “choir” while children in Pre-K T-Th, Jr. K and Kindergarten take a part for one of the Na-tivity characters. Simple songs are sung yet very familiar tunes. We also invite the guests to sing 3 different Christmas carols for the children to which they get to applaud their guests. A great BIG thank you goes to Pam Engel for offering to play the piano for dress rehearsals as well as all the programs. Many thanks also to Pastor Matthew for offering the opening prayer. Also thank you to Mrs. Meacham playing her flute and Pastor Matthew for playing the mandolin during the caroling time. The addi-tional musical instruments add to the environment. A reception was held in the Fellowship Hall following each program and lots of sharing and vis-iting went on during this time. Thank you to those families who brought goodies to share. After all the busyness of the final week, the Staff returned on Friday for a work day in prepar-ing rooms for our January return. When January approaches we know that means one thing………registration! Can you believe that? Church members will be able to register for next year beginning on Sunday, January 24th. Please watch the bulletins for more information regarding times and fees. May God continue to bless and guide you through this New Year!

HAPPY NEW YEAR 2016!!!!
