Minister’s Message:

In May, our study topic is Music . . . music and what is not? Is music a single sound or a cacophony of instrumental voices working together? And – what IS music and what is not? Sacred Servant of the Month By Ann Liciani

Almost four years ago, Kathie Fallon was looking for help in plan-ning the women's retreat. I had never even been to a retreat, but my sister Lin and I signed up, thinking we might write a memo or two. Little did we know what Kathie had in store for us! That first year the three of us planned the entire retreat, with Noreen and Christina handling the spiritual journey and Sunday service. We value the friendship we gained working with Kathie, and learning about how our spiritual community works, from knowing how far ahead and what the deadlines are, to scheduling meeting rooms. But most of all, I am grateful that Kathie knew what she was doing and kept the retreat going because the actual experience was like nothing I'd been involved in before. We learned about ourselves and Unity, had great fun, and met many new friends. And to think, I might've missed the whole thing if not for that spur-of-the-moment decision!

Since then more and more women

have become involved each year in

the planning team, which represents

about 25% of the attendees. It's a

fabulous collaborative team experi-

ence filled with love, brainstorming

and creative ideas. The involvement

of the team has taken down the levels of

Susan

This Month we would like to honor Susan Quilleash for her Sacred Ser-vice. She is on the Usher team, the Plat-form Assistant team, the Library team and she is also the team leader of the Unity History team. Susan we bless you and thank you for all of your sacred service to Unity in the Rockies and want you to know that you are truly appreciated. The History team could use another volunteer. If you are interested in vol-unteering, contact Susan at 271-5822.

stress and upped the energy! Each year we start with an idea that blos-soms into a fully integrated event. There's no better way to get to know the wonderful women of Unity in the Rockies. I am in awe of the lovely spirit of my teammates, whom you may already know from their dedicated involvement throughout our spiritual community. The bonds cre-ated within the planning circle and at the retreat itself, create a foundational group of dedicated volunteers and spiritual family members, sustained by the retreat and nurtured by our group involvement both here and at the Women's Potlucks. You will see our members involved in all aspects of church business as we are energized and sustained by each other and this event. It's a fabulous way to get to know new people and it's a great way to stay in contact and connected to the community on an ongoing basis. Women, if you haven't gone, please sign up soon. Our theme this year is "If I Were Brave." We'd love to see you there. Or join us in the planning circle for an even more satisfying ex-perience. To all the other supportive members of our community, we are humbly and genuinely grateful for all of your support over the years. The 2013 retreat will be held on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Septem-ber 20, 21 and 22.

Getting to Know Renee Sokoloff

By Cathie Hartman

Where did you grow up and what

brought you to Colorado Springs? I grew up in Los Alamos, New Mexico after having moved there when I was eight years old. I stayed in Los Ala-mos until I was ready to leave for col-lege in Washington State. When I was a child we would always come to Colorado Springs for vacations and so when I graduated from Eastern Wash-ington University near Spokane, Washington I wanted to live in the place that gave me such good child-hood memories. What brought you to Unity and

how long have you been attending?

Back in November 2011 my friend and co-worker at Citadel Broadcasting was the first person to introduce me to the Law of Attraction and she told me that Unity in the Rockies was a great place to learn and practice this method of positive thinking.

What type of work do you do? I am a photographer and graphic designer. I have been doing this work for over ten years and started my company, Renee Sokoloff Photography & Design at the same time that I started going to Unity. I am also a partner and founder of The Red Cache International, a fine art, photography, book and design service website.

UITR she is on the Cleaning team and the Photography team. What was the nicest compliment you ever received? The nicest compliment I have ever received was from Byron at Unity, he said that I had the brightest aura he had ever seen, which made me feel very good about my spirit. Is there anything else you would like to share with your church fam-ily? I feel very blessed to have found such wonderful people at Unity in the Rockies and to have made such good friends. I really feel at home here and since I have become the new Events Coordinator I feel even more con-nected to this community.

Ministers Message— (Continued from page 1)

God and music. We’ll explore differ-ent kinds of instruments and consider how we use music to create harmony and Oneness in the world we share. We’ll deepen our spiritual experience by awakening our awareness of the music around us and bring what is in the background to the forefront of our lives - and we’ll learn about how the science of music and our sense of the spiritual are dovetailing. I can't wait! I look forward to sharing sacred space with you!

Tell us a little about your family.

My father still lives in Los Alamos with his wife Helen and my sister Patricia lives in Colorado Springs with her husband, Noel and five year old daughter, Giaya. What are your hobbies and what

do you like to do for fun? Fortunately for me, my work is my play. I love to go on long drives and hikes and take as many pictures as possible. I am always looking for new places to travel and have adventures. What volunteering do you do and

what do you like about it? At the moment I am volunteering for Cause 4 the Paws, a non-profit that helps local animal rescues raise money through music festivals. I love working with this company because of the people I work with and the animals I help. At

Shirley Goodnest A mom was concerned about her kindergarten son walking to school. He didn't want his mother to walk with him. She wanted to give him the feeling that he had some indepen-

dence but yet know that he was safe. So she had an idea of how to handle it. She asked a neighbor if she would please follow him to school in the mornings, staying at a distance, so he probably would-n't notice her.

She said that since she was up early with her toddler anyway, it would be a good way for them to get some exercise as well, so she agreed. The next school day, the neighbor and her little girl set out

Reiki Sessions Offered

If you don’t know what Reiki is, or if you have never had

a Reiki treatment, you are missing out. Reiki is the Japanese

word which means "Universal Life Energy.” That is the en-

ergy that permeates all that is—including us. We use this

energy for healing and growth. All you have to do is to be

open to receive this energy that the Reiki Practitioners of

Unity are offering.

Here's how it works, each table will have four Reiki prac-

titioners per table for each client. So the treatment will only

take 15 to 20 minutes each. This way we can treat three cli-

ents an hour.

There is a appointment sheet with appointment cards on

the bulletin board in the foyer. Sign up for the time that’s

best for you. Please wear comfortable clothes and socks. If

you have any questions please call Berti Greene 578-9742.

Suggested love offering is $10 (If you can’t afford it, please

talk to Berti, because she doesn’t want anyone not to get

treatments who want to have one). All of the money will go

directly to Unity.

So give your self a gift and sign up for a treatment.

Reiki Practitioners For those of you who are not aware of it, Unity in the Rockies has a vol-unteer Reiki team.

If you don’t know what Reiki is, or if you have never

had a Reiki treat-ment, you are

“Universal Life Energy.” That is

the energy that

permeates all that is—including us. We use this energy

for healing and growth. All you have to do is to be open to receive this en-

ergy that the Reiki Practitioners of Unity are offering. This dedicated group of practitio-ners has been coming in on the fourth Saturday of the month for the past several years to serve UITR. They do this without pay, just for the love of serving.

If you have never had a Reiki treat-ment sign-up and come and try it out. It is an amazing experience to have several practitioners working on you at the same time.

The treatments are offered for a suggested love offering of $10, but if you can’t afford to pay, talk with Berti. She doesn’t want anyone not to get a treatment because they don’t have the money. All of the money collected goes directly to UITR.

This amazing team is headed by its dedicated coordinator, Reverend Berti Green. The other present practitioners are: Beverly Michels, Cathleen O'Brien, Reverend Chrystal Torode, Cindy Wilson, Diane Bonin, Donna Dague, Gloria Kieffer, Julie Wilson, Pat Ertel, Richard Ryan, Sharon Brunink, Sylvia Strickland, and Virginia Clark.

If you are a Reiki practitioner and would like to participate, they do need more practitioners. Please call Berti at 578-9742 or 201-3490 for more information.

GREENews from your Unity GEE (Green/

Earthcare/Ecospiritual) Team

30 percent of all food in the US is thrown away. About half of the wa-ter used to produce this food also goes to waste since agriculture is the largest human use of water. The theme for this year’s WORLD ENVIRON-MENT DAY on JUNE 5, is “Think. Eat. Save.” The goal is to reduce our “FOODprint” by becoming more aware of the impact of food waste and loss across the food supply chain. How about we at Unity begin with not wasting ANY of the food people bring for fellowship?…like being sure per-ishable leftovers go home with some-one instead of getting thrown out.

And in the Psalm, it says, 'Shirley Good-nest and Marcy shall follow me all the days of my life', so I guess I'll just have to get used to it!' The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make His face to shine upon you, an be gracious unto you; the Lord lift His countenance upon you, and give you peace. May Shirley Goodnest and Marcy be with you today and always.

As the two walked and chatted, kicking stones and twigs, Timmy's little friend noticed the same lady was following them as she seemed to do every day all week. Fi-nally she said to Timmy, 'Have you noticed that lady following us to school all week? Do you know her?' Timmy nonchalantly re-plied, 'Yeah, I know who she is.' The little girl said, 'Well, who is she?' 'That's just Shirley Good-nest,' Timmy replied, 'and her daughter Marcy.' 'Shirley Goodnest? Who the heck is she and why is she

“The Archetypes

of Downton Abbey”

"We tell stories because they tell us who we are.” Using Christopher Booker’s The Seven Basic Plots; Why we tell stories as our guide, we’ll ex-amine the use of archetypes in the popular PBS British television series, “Downton Abbey.” This runaway hit evokes such a strong response in viewers because of the power of key archetypes deftly woven into the script.

We’ll examine some of these arche-types and what they tell us about the characters’ unconscious, their place in history, and ourselves. Join the explo-ration and fun as some of the “characters" come on stage and reveal their inner lives. Expect to be enter-tained.

Cost is $8 for members, $12 for non-members.

Unity in the Rockies

Friday, May 17th at 7 to 9 pm

There was a little boy with large anger issues. He rampaged about his life, angry at the world, believing it meant him harm. His father observ-ing this gave his son a bag of large nails and told him that every time he felt anger he should hammer a nail in the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence but gradually the number of daily nails dwindled as he discovered it was easier to change his view than to drive those nails into that fence.

Finally the first day came when the boy didn't feel angry at all and he proudly announced this to his father. His father, in turn, suggested

that he now pull out one nail for each day he felt at peace. The days passed slowly but at last the young boy was finally able to report that all the nails were gone. The father led his son by the hand to the fence saying: "You have done well, but I want you to notice all the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. In much the same way when you express anger, it leaves a scar on you and the other person. With time, compassion, wisdom and understand-ing most wounds will heal however isn’t it so much easier not to hammer in all those nails to begin with.

A Bag of Large Nails

— Church Chuckles --- A mortal said to God, “What is a million years like to you?” God answered, “Like one second.” The mortal asked, “What’s a mil-lion dollars like to you?” “Like one penny,” God said. “Can I have a penny?” asked the

mortal. “Just a second,” God replied.
