historyO F A L S A
The association's history can be traced back to the establishment of different law
organizations between the late 80's to mid 90's, which became the predecessors of
today's Asian Law Students' Association or ALSA.
In 1989, a group of law students from Indo-
nesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and
Thailand came together with the idea of creat-ing an organization that could promote great-
er understanding and appreciation among the
law students of the said nations. As a result, the ASEAN Law Students' Association was
born. A few years later, it was this same spir-it that empowered law students from Japan,
Korea and Taiwan to come together in 1996to form a similar organization for East Asianlaw students, under the name of Asian Law
Students' Association. Similarly, Hong Kong
had its own initial organization catering to theeducational and social needs of its students
within its territory.
With the growing desire of these differentgroups to expand their networks and develop a
law student community in the Asian region, an
agreement was signed on September 7, 2002which marked the union between the ASEAN
Law Students' Organization (Indonesia, Ma-
laysia, Philippines, Singapore and Thailand)and the Asian Law Students' Organization (Ja-
pan, Korea and Taiwan) into a single entity,
thus giving birth to ALSA as it is known today.
The merger was enforced in 2003 at the ALSA
Conference in Bangkok, Thailand along withthe enrollment of China and Hong Kong as
new members. Since then, more Asian coun-
tries have been admitted to full membership, including Brunei Darussalam in 2010, Laos
and Vietnam in 2012 and Sri Lanka, its newestmember, last August 2013. Therefore, there
are in total of 14 National Chapters in ALSA.
ALSA hopes to welcome more countries into
the organization, as seen with the on-going
observership process of national groups fromIndia and Macau. In addition to this, it aims
to establish more partnerships with various
academic institutions, NGOs and governmentagencies as part of our aim of empowering
and developing law students into becomingthe future movers and leaders in the Asian re-
gion.

international eventsA L S A
There are two large gatherings of ALSA members each year.
They are, namely, the ALSA Conference (AC) and the ALSA Fo-rum (AF) respectively. There is essentially no distinction between
these two events, since the standard format of a social night(welcoming & farewell dinners), academic event, cultural pre-
sentation, legal and cultural tours - are present in both. The for-
mat of the academic activity however, varies per host country.National Chapters are given the privilege to host either the AC/
AF by bidding for it in the ofine Governing Council meetings.

As part of ALSA's initiative to strengthen tie
with its more established European counterpart, ALSA has also hosted the ELSA Moot
Court Regional Rounds. ALSA Taiwan and
ALSA Malaysia have been the gracious hostsso far, coordinating well with the Organising
Committee of the competition. The event exposes students and volunteers to a competi
tive caliber of mooting, which is still gaining
ground in Asia. It has also been a way for Na-tional Chapters to welcome European law stu
dents and to encourage more events shared
