LETTER FROM THE CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD

On behalf of the Board of Trustees of Mill Springs Academy, I would like tothank the many individuals and families who generously contributed tothe school during the 2008–2009 school year. In addition to allowing our

constituents the opportunity to better understand the school’s yearly income andexpenditures, this report allows us to acknowledge the generous support that we receive through critical fundraisers such as the Annual Fund, periodic capital campaigns, as well as school clubs and various scholarship funds.

We remain very blessed here at Mill Springs Academy by the generous support of so many in our community, both those who are here now and those who havecome before us. Even in the difficult, complex, and challenging economic times wehave faced this past year and continue to live in, we are very grateful to see how theMill Springs’ school family continues to support our mission, students, teachers, and programs. For example, 83% of our parents contributed to our Annual Fund,a very powerful and tangible expression of support. Your support of our Annual Fund, various school organizations, and the gift of time by so manyvolunteers is deeply appreciated.

Please know that your philanthropy has made a difference both to our students andto the ongoing security of Mill Springs as an institution; ensuring a program that isdynamic and individualized to the needs of each student; faculty who are well prepared and continuing to grow; and a warm, welcoming physical environment.

LETTER FROM THE HEADMASTER

Mill Springs Academy is a wonderfully blessed community and we aregrateful for the thoughtful and generous support we receive from somany of our parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, Board members and

friends during the 2008–2009 school-year. The sense of a supportive, nurturingcommunity where each child is valued and taught the way they learn is fundamental to the life of our school. Your support allows this vision to become a reality every day.

Just as many in our community, state and nation both felt and met the challengeof a changing financial landscape, the same was true in 2008–2009 for MillSprings Academy. The fiscal year began with charitable giving at or slightly abovebudgeted expectations. The second quarter brought a general slowdown in gifts, and this trend continued throughout the remainder of our fiscal year. While overall giving was down, much of this fiscal deficit was able to be addressedthrough moderate expense management measures.

We are truly grateful to the families of our current students and all who have supported MSA during the past year for having kept our school as a priority intheir lives. Because of your commitment and generosity, MSA once again graduated a group of senior students who gained acceptance to top tier collegesand universities all across the country; the number of our students participatingand excelling in drama, band, chorus and various sports continued to grow; andour students were given the tools necessary to bring out their “best selves” both academically and personally.

As we move into 2009–2010, you have my commitment and pledge that MillSprings will pursue resources that allow us to retain an exceptional faculty and staff;we will set a strategic course that ensures the highest quality in our curricular andextra-curricular offerings, and we will plan for the future of our schools facility-related needs with care, fiscal discipline and a strong sense of what hasmade Mill Springs such a special place. It’s our hope that you will continue to join us on this journey of shaping young lives.

Thank you for your support of Mill Springs Academy; for your belief in the valueof the type of education we provide; and most of all for the privilege of allowing usto work with your child.

Enjoy our 2008–2009 Annual Report.

Robert W. Moore, Headmaster

ANNUAL FUND Chair Staff/Faculty Chair Grandparent ChairBarbara Talbott Diane Lewis Sherry Steinway

Mill Springs’ Annual Fund is the cornerstone of our school’s development program and contributes directly to thequality of education that takes place at the school. Gifts to the Annual Fund from parents, grandparents, faculty, staff, friends, and alumni are used to keep annual tuition increases to a minimum.

The growth of the Annual Fund reflects great trust in the mission of the school and has established a vital culture of giving as we move forward with our plans for expansion. Great commitment from our parents, volunteers, Board ofTrustees, faculty, staff, and friends of the school has created an exceptional acceleration in the Annual Fund. Continuedsupport of the Annual Fund will ensure a strong future for every student at Mill Springs Academy.

The following are just a few examples of ways in which Annual Fund dollars are spent: n Keep tuition increases down

(annual tuition increases at MSA have remained at 3% over the past 5 years; much lower than the na-tional average of 7%)

n Allow us to attract and maintain valuable staff (through competitive salaries and benefits like 401K, insurance, continuing education)

n Fund our Scholarship Endowment program (5% of the monies raised each year are set aside to help fund our scholarship endowment program)

n Broaden our Fine Arts curriculum (giving students full access to programs in art, theater, chorus, band, media, and broadcasting)

n Provide funds for various classroom enhancements n Covering Unanticipated Operating expenses

(Unscheduled repairs, etc.)
