Summary

Milk: Final Estimates by State, 2013-2017, U.S. Department of Agriculture, Agricultural Statistics Board, National

Agricultural Statistics Service, Statistical Bulletin No. 1055.

Introduction: This bulletin presents final estimates, including revisions made by the Agricultural Statistics Board (ASB),

for the production years 2013 through 2017. Number of milk cows, production per cow, and total production were

published during calendar years 2013-2017 in periodic ASB reports. Disposition and Income data will be published in the

Milk Disposition and Income - Final Estimates 2013-2017 Statistical Bulletin No. 1060.

Procedures: Revisions were made after a thorough review of the original survey data and all additional data now

available, including the 2017 Census of Agriculture. Other data series considered included Federal Milk Market Orders,

State Departments of Agriculture, receipts of milk by plants and dealers, checkoff receipts, and any other available

administrative information. The 2013-2017 estimates shown herein are considered final and will not be revised again.

At the National level, revisions to estimates of milk production and annual number of milk cows were less than one

percent.

Agricultural Census Publications: The U. S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service

(NASS) will release several products from the 2017 Census of Agriculture on April 11, 2019. The Census is the leading

source of statistics about the Nation’s agricultural production and the only source of consistent, comparable data at the

county, state, and national levels. The Census includes all places from which $1,000 or more of agricultural products,

including government payments, were produced and sold, or normally would have been sold, during the census year.

Census publications also include demographic items such as sex of producer, residence on or off the farm, days worked

off farm, years present on farm, age group categories, race, and number of persons living in each household.
